Some of us - yes, even those of us who have taken the vaccine - find the overwhelming desire to "shut up" those with dissenting opinions more than a little disturbing.
Some of us find the "dissenting" camp's complete antipathy to the health, safety, lives, and livelihoods of the rest of us to be more disturbing still.

They're basically advocating for driving drunk every day. That's not "dissenting opinions," that's malicious.

Correct and people contract it from being bitten by fleas that have bitten infected rodents. We didn't be become 'more resistant', we became cleaner and more intolerant to having rodents everywhere. FYI: prairie dogs carry plague.

Also - unless I'm wrong (always possible, I'm no medical person) - you can't actually become immune to a bacterial infection. You can treat it, and you can minimise your chances of contracting it in the first place, but having it won't grant you long term immunity except at the species level - ie, those that survived it naturally tend to breed that trait.
Yeah, and the bad part is bacteria can develop resistance to antibiotics.
Education on germ theory and taking the proper precautions (sound familiar?) have enabled us to avoid outbreaks of all kinds of icky diseases that used to be commonplace. The fools that made this pandemic political have destroyed 150 years of progress in fighting preventable diseases. We are in for a heap more trouble as more and more rubes turn their backs on sensible disease prevention.

"The fools that made this pandemic political have destroyed 150 years of progress in fighting preventable diseases."

That's a very negative way of putting it! Seems to me that they've wildly succeeded in conserving traditional values.
They're conservationists! Think of all those endangered diseases!

To be clear, while losing weight, exercising, and eating fruits and vegetables are generally good for health, they will not prevent SARS-CoV-2 infection or transmission.

To be clear, vaccines do not prevent infection or transmission either.
Yes they do. If you're unvaccinated, you're 4-6 times more likely to become infected even with the highly contagious Delta variant.

Vaccines reduce transmission and infection, which is definitely not the same as preventing it.
They obviously prevent it for some.

He doesn’t believe in what was taught so, maybe UCLA should revoke his degree.
A degree shows that he CAN exercise the necessary skills and knowledge to solve problems in his chosen field.

Everything after that is not a matter of "can," but a question of "will he/won't he?"

Meanwhile, in Vermont, the Delta wave is barely a ripple. They sure must eat their vegetables there!
It's well known maple syrup offers protection from many kinds of virus.

Though the key is to snort the syrup, after swallowing a zinc supplement. It does no good if you swallow it.

I heard that Starbucks Pumpkin Spice syrup protects you from COVID, bit you need to administer it rectally.
Please don't spread this useless, irresponsible disinformation.

Tell them "Hey, did you hear? They're putting vaccine in cattle! Giving the shots to the cows, man! You want to get that in your beef?"

Watch as a big chunk of America slims down and does something good for the environment at the same time. If you're gonna lie, at least do it for a good cause or two.

Make sure not to intimate that this is routine livestock vaccination. Let them think it's THE Vaccine(s).

At least a third of them have boners for Armageddon. I just can't believe this shi!'s really happening.
The right wing of American politics has been sick in the head since Reagan at least, and they've increasingly backed indefensible things in the face of overwhelming evidence that not-Republican policies are almost always better. Part of the indoctrination is religious radicalization. They call themselves "conservatives" but they're really extremists; their positions are uniquely positioned far to the right among "Mainstream" politics as shown by our economic and cultural peer nations. Their values are starkly at odds with the ideals of the founding documents of the US. They're openly anti-Enlightenment.
The only thing different now is how much it's come to a frothing head and suffused absolutely everything in American life. Even responding to this disease has been polarized by Republicans as something partisan, in defiance of all common sense and common ground and objective science.

And it immediately got worse:

Florida Students Are No Longer Required To Quarantine After Being Exposed To COVID

So many teachers have died needlessly. This is a deliberate attempt to weaken the public school system and ultimately replace it with parochial, private or for profit schools. It is depraved and disgusting and in a just world, these people should rot in jail.
[fixed link]
In terms of quarantine rules, Ladapo eliminated previous mandates requiring students to quarantine for at least four days off-campus if they've been exposed. Under the new guidelines, students who have been exposed can continue going to campus, "without restrictions or disparate treatment," provided they are asymptomatic. They can also quarantine, but no longer than seven days, provided they do not get sick.
It's a good thing asymptomatic covid patients aren't contagious.

OH WAIT.

To the guy earlier in the thread who mocked the idea that the rest of us could be smarter than this doctor? We rest our case.

The study of maths is hard. When we speak of mathematics we are referring to the discipline of mathematics. We can say 'my studies in mathematics are progressing well', and the verb is there agreeing with the plural form.

There are cognate examples. The discipline of Physical Sciences is usually contracted to Physics for example. Even Americans don't usually contract that to Physic, presumably because that word has an alternative meaning in pharmaceuticals.
“My studies (in mathematics) are progressing well” has the plural from studies. It would be the same with “latin” or “biology” or anything.
The puzzle is why English has the verb taking the singular form when mathematics has the plural. As pointed out, French treats it differently. I think the answer is that in the academic context we are referring to the discipline or curricular topic, which is singular even though in each case, including those you mention, that discipline encompasses many different elements. The label is merely descriptive but we use it alone because the rest is implied.
Is it “maths is fun” in the UK?

Anyway the question of plural/singular of collective nouns is nothing new. You can break everything down into attributes so when do you declare a collective to be a singular item versus still a collection is going to vary by dialect and language, and over time.
Again, it is the (implied) subject or learning of maths that is fun. As you say, you can tie yourself into knots. There is no consensus in Britain on whether committee is singular or plural. I favour the singular because it is a body, but many prefer the plural because it is made up of several members.
What I take away from this is that the British is fractious.

Given the scientific illiteracy of much of the scientific establishment...
Please continue posting. I need a bingo.
https://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/crackpot.html

Oh man, I'm gonna re-read the Emdrive threads on NSF later and see how many points I can get.
Can I get some honorary crackpot points for misreading John Baez as "Joan Baez" and wondering why this crackpot treating system was attributed to a singer, not a physicist (or mathematician)?
Well we both know how pots can crack, they crack under diamonds and rust.
