The fact that the photos were illegal doesn't mean they weren't in the public interest
Except they weren't in the public interest. What in Zod's name is "in the public's interest" about pictures of a private citizen's genitals? It doesn't matter one iota who he is related to, because Hunter Biden isn't in politics!

I hear Twitter is filming a TV commercial with Eddie Murphy. Here’s the BTS of the film crew at work: ;)

View: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=E6yFlIQxp8g

I saw his rant about the Oscars in that scene, saw how his costar was trying not to bust a gut while trying to perform as 'awkward' instead, and figured "That is such an Eddie Murphy line, it has to be an ad-lib." I went to look it up and, sure enough, improvised. One of several of his improvised lines that made it into the final cut. There's a reason that man has had star power for decades, despite a lot of career missteps.

This journalist solicited hacked material. Clearly against TOS.
This isn't hard to understand.
I think what's "hard to understand" for a lot of us is how the TOS gets applied. Well, as I mentioned before, it's not that hard to understand anymore. It's whatever Elon feels like doing. He is truly the rightful king now...

... said the one guy clearly without relatives who don't know diddly/crap about computers.

I thought the entire reason for having children was so we can dump tasks like that on the new generation. I'm well over 50 now and my days of happily doing that crap for free are long gone unless things have gone completely off the rails. The minute the little cousins were old enough to say "Oh, I know how to get your printer working Grandma!" ... they were old enough to have that job.

If you don't have a couple techish young 'uns to dump family tech support on ... well, sucks to be you. I'm sorry. It's actually pretty nice.
Unless your children are over the age of 35, they won't be able to help you any more than anyone else.

Wonder if the significant uptick in alt-right trolls showing up at Ars again indicates the Russians have more time and money to focus on their usual social media bullshit.
sadly, I think we've reached the point where the rwnj troll world is self sustaining in the US. Looks like Russian involvement is mostly in terms of steering the Repub party. But the nutjobs and hatemongers seem to be domestic ...

Frankly I hope they're all talk. Nobody needs to be subjected to an expensive and time-consuming frivolous lawsuit in the American system.
I'm pretty sure Conde's lawyers need that, want that, and are downright eager to both accrue the billable hours involved in that AND cram those billed hours down Walsh's throat, should he or his equally odious employer be stupid enough to get into a position where he can be put on the hook for them.

Unless your children are over the age of 35, they won't be able to help you any more than anyone else.
On the other hand, they are probably more likely to be able to help with editing TikTok videos on your phone, or editing Instagram shots, or showing you how to do anything at all on phone apps with no user interface whatsoever.

Maybe I can muddle through it on my own using trial and error, or I can ask an average teenager and have an answer in seconds.

It's not an age versus tech thing. It's a simple matter of familiarity.

From the article: "I literally only wanted his Twitter account to make stupid tweets,” Doomed told Wired. “And it worked, both sides are arguing over it."

This is too neutral or tame of a statement for an actual hacker bent on chaos. This is someone trying to chicken out of a hack and using Wired as a means to defuse a potentially nasty legal situation.
I think you're underestimating the call to sheer nihilism a lot of people--particularly infosec-capable people, and even more particularly relatively young ones, not that we know "Doomed's" age--feel.

Are you implying that technically savvy and ethically ambiguous young people would do something... just for the lulz?

I want to see nude sexual pictures of the presidents son
One, you are weird.

Two.

Obama, Hillary, and now Biden.

Republicans have for each one of them been in political power including with the DOJ and yet have done nothing but scream and whine.

If there was anything worthwhile that they did that was illegal right wingers would put up, but they never do.

Based on the descriptions of what constitutes bannable behavior on Twitter, this sounds like it was an executive decision (and we know who made it) because the nuances of policy could have gone either way, and Musk got angry, again, over one of his Reich-wing buddies being outed and humiliated on Twitter.

Love how Musk is all about "free speech" as long as it's some fucking fascist doing the speaking...
You used "nuance" and "Musk" in the same sentence, silly wabbit.

This ban happened because it was embarrassing to Twitter. I reserve comment on the character of Mr. Walsh.

While Twitter is a private platform and they can suspend any account for basically any reason at any time, you can't really circle this square with the idea of "free speech absolutism" where the CEO of the company defined that as anything that isn't explicitly illegal. In this case, it appears that a journalist was banned for embarrassing Twitler by pointing out how shitty Twitter security is. Whatever someone's opinion about Mr. Walsh, and whether it was karmic justice that his account was compromised is rather besides the point.

This is Ars, if there isn't a circle-jerk on hating Elon or anything remotely right of extreme left, then what's the point? This place has really gone down hill over that last bunch of years.

In this case, it's primarily about Matt Walsh, a self-described "theocratic fascist" who has built an entire cottage industry out of anti-trans hate. "Anything remotely right of extreme left" my ass.

I don't know who any of the people in this story are, but I found this bit interesting. Did someone clone this guy's cell phone? How did all MFA get bypassed?

I would RTFA, but the Wired article is paywalled.
Based on a quotation, it sounds like cell phone cloning was exactly how it was done, along with some social engineering of someone who works with Walsh.

Tell me why should I not hate him?

Should I not hate the racism his lets go on in his companies?
Should I not hate him for the sexual advances on his own employees?
Should I not hate him for enabling child porn?
Should I not hate him for meeting every sign of a horrible abusive boss?
Should I not hate him for enabling impersonation?

You guys know yelling Russia every time someone disagrees with your point of view makes you look insane right ?
Oh but the New Right making a point of licking Putin’s boot at every possible occasion just to stick it to the libs (but also because they actually like the guy) isn’t insane somehow?

Twitter is a private platform. This is just an example of why it was a mistake to become overly reliant on any one platform (especially one that you do not own or control), especially when it comes to journalists and news outlets. These companies don't owe them anything.

I continue to believe that Ars should seriously consider getting off Twitter, or at least start cross-posting to Mastodon as well? I am willing to bet that they will easily get the same amount of engagement there at least, even at a fraction of the follower count.
Unless something changes, I can’t see a benefit to Ars leaving Twitter, but getting on Mastodon is a good idea for everyone, whether a person hates Twitter or loves it.

I'm in the process of leaving Twitter (until and unless the current pro-hate stance changes) and trust me, it's not easy. Mastodon is many things but a direct drop-in Twitter replacement it is not.
