(Emphasis mine)On Thursday afternoon, Wired editor-in-chief Gideon Lichfield tweeted that Twitter told Cameron that he "had broken its rules by “directly distribut[ing] content obtained through hacking that contains private information, may put people in physical harm or danger, or contains trade secrets.”
And yet, we wouldn't cover "Crummy wannabe provocateur gets account hacked" as a story by itself. As always the attempt to cover things up is the bigger story.I suspect that since Walsh is on the "conservative" side of things and this hack showed the fragility of Twitter's infrastructure that Musk ordered this journalist's account banned.
That's the nicest thing I've ever seen someone say about Matt Walsh.Matt Walsh is a shitty human being, so of course I find all this funny and I'm rooting against him. But even if this reporter wasn't with Wired I'm always going to be on the side of journalists being able to cover stories like this. Public figure getting hacked is a news story. Confirming that the hack really happened and discussing the details without revealing things that could put someone in danger etc is reasonable.
scandal <> Twitter (and the US media) fact-checking a dubious story broken by a Murdoch-owned tabloid during "October surprise" month in a presidential election year. The only scandal is in the minds of right-wing nutjobs who are still trying to turn Hunter Biden's laptop into Joe Biden's Benghazi.Twitter’s hacked materials policy was last updated in October 2020, after the scandal where the platform blocked a New York Post article reporting on Hunter Biden’s hacked laptop.
So celebrities getting their accounts hacked and they start claiming they're going to give out iPads? For days? Good luck getting Twitter to help you!
A virulent transphobe gets hacked? Twitter's on it ASAP!
Musk's priorities (which we knew were all garbage, but...)
I'm more concerned with the chilling effects on free speech when Entitled Rich White Guy threatens you with a lawsuit from very expensive lawyers, way better than you can afford, than I am about some counterfactual hypothesizing about Dick Move Elon Did This Week #7. Elon being an moron, I would argue, is barely newsworthy any more, and should just be expected.Based on the descriptions of what constitutes bannable behavior on Twitter, this sounds like it was an executive decision (and we know who made it) because the nuances of policy could have gone either way, and Musk got angry, again, over one of his Reich-wing buddies being outed and humiliated on Twitter.
Love how Musk is all about "free speech" as long as it's some fucking fascist doing the speaking...
I don't know who any of the people in this story are, but I found this bit interesting. Did someone clone this guy's cell phone? How did all MFA get bypassed?gain unfettered access to his Twitter, Google, and Microsoft accounts
The Ars coverage:I don't know who any of the people in this story are, but I found this bit interesting. Did someone clone this guy's cell phone? How did all MFA get bypassed?
I would RTFA, but the Wired article is paywalled.
In the Wired report, Cameron reveals how Walsh’s account was hacked. Doomed confirmed he used a technique called SIM swapping, relying on an “insider” close to Walsh, who helped Doomed trick a cellular provider into switching the SIM card associated with Walsh’s account to a SIM card that Doomed controlled. Cameron’s reporting thus confirmed a tweet from Walsh suggesting that an “insider” helped the hacker.
You understand this makes Musk look bad, right?Loving the sudden flood of Elon Musk / Twitter articles! Keep'em coming!![]()
mush murdering a child and calling satan wouldn't change his cults view of him.You understand this makes Musk look bad, right?
Frankly I hope they're all talk. Nobody needs to be subjected to an expensive and time-consuming frivolous lawsuit in the American system.I hope that The Daily Wire and Wet Malsh spend a ton of money on lawsuits and get absolutely nothing, and better yet end up paying the legal fees for the defendants.
And Musk is the guy who hired a private detective to try to prove someone was a pedophile (they weren't).Based on the descriptions of what constitutes bannable behavior on Twitter, this sounds like it was an executive decision (and we know who made it) because the nuances of policy could have gone either way, and Musk got angry, again, over one of his Reich-wing buddies being outed and humiliated on Twitter.
