Netflix increases prices for all plans by up to $2 per month

But if that’s not enough solace, disappointed subscribers can always, as Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said last month, “cancel with one click.”

Which I did last time they raised prices here.

Netflix prices have gone up by over 50% in Australia over the past decade and their offerings are far worse. As competition has increased, so have prices, the opposite of what market forces types always tell us will happen.

Not missing them.

I'm not so video-starved to need to subscribe to a service that provides something that I frankly don't need to have for anything more than a trivial price. I can go take a walk and get lost in thought if I want distraction. Hell, books are still a thing too.

This is such a dumb value proposition that I've checked out of looking at streaming services altogether. HBO Max is a pretty good deal, but I've spent enough energy trying to figure out what the best choice that the best choice (honestly rational in my case) is just to not care about what's streaming, and not keep current because it's not worth the outlay in terms of money and time investied. I'll catch it 10 years later on reruns if it really matters. They'll at least be desperate enough to appreciate my viewership at that point...

Before this price rise, they were making billions in profit.
https://ir.netflix.net/financials/quarterly-earnings/default.aspx

It really seems like this wasn't needed, especially with the acquisition terminated and the $2.8B pay-out they'll receive from that termination. Netflix subscribers are getting fucked, just for fun.

EDIT: Also, Netflix COULD be reached for comment. They just decided not to not comment. Don't give them an out. Instead, highlight that they chose to keep their mouth shut, like a coward.

Prices in Canada are bizarrely much lower:
  • Standard with Ads — C$7.99/month
  • Standard (ad-free, 1080p) — C$18.99/month
  • Premium (ad-free, 4K) — C$23.99/month
Keep in mind that C$ is only worth 72% of US$, so the 4K is US$17.28 up here.
It's worth noting that the content available in each country isn't 1:1, when I lived in Canada the selection on there was quite different (and mostly in the sense of "less of it"), which probably makes up some of the pricing difference, assuming it's driven by content licensing costs.

Edited to add: Please don't take this as me defending the pricing, just that it isn't accurate to look at the Canadian price and think you're getting the same content for less.

Unless the content is going to be exceptionally better Netflix can fuck off. There's so much competition, what makes them think we're all just going to keep hanging on through never ending price increases? Not their amazing content for sure. Their movies are "B" quality at best. Small cast, mediocre sets and VFX. Seriously what do they imagine they possess that other streamers don't? I kept Netflix for a "backup" on rainy days when no new movies were coming out, but there's no way I'm going to keep them as a backup to movie doldrums with these price increases. I couldn't even stomach paying for 4k since their content isn't really worthy of it. I just do't watch that much and I guess I shouldn't be surprised that maybe there's a large portion of the population that are "whales" to Netflix and just watch endless amounts of TV and don't have jobs and other interests beyond TV? Capitalists gotta capitalize I guess.

You know what price has stayed the same?

Not subscribing to them.
I gathered the data and made an attractive 3D bar chart.

I signed up, then immediately cancelled, last night just to watch the opening night game. Their coverage was...fine. They had CC in the booth which was great to hear.

The post game gimmick was painful to watch while I searched for the remote to turn it off. Forcing the players to eat at a hotdog cart while interviewing them about the game?

And the pre-game stuff was pretty annoying, but I'm sure part of that was MLB making a big deal about the first opening night game? Idk, I didn't need to watch that Bert what's-his-face strut around screaming about what baseball is. I know what baseball is. I'm here to watch the fucking game.

I'm paying for the f*cking MLB now, aren't I?

Just put it and WWE in its own tier GoshDarnIt!
They only got the opening night game last night, the field of dreams game later this year, and the home run derby. I think that's it from MLB. If they're squeezing customers for that, they got a bad fucking deal.

E: oh yeah, I meant to mention during the sign up process, they force you to pick three shows from a list to seed your recommendations. There weren't three I would say I like and define what I like to watch. There was a lot of garbage though. Not a good first impression for a new user.

They will not stop until they reach the $70 per month that brings you close to cable parity with 2 or 3 services.
Just boiling the frog, as a shrinking field of competitors agree to match the price hikes.

Exactly. Unfortunately, they know how much the average consumer will pay for streaming services overall, and their goal is to raise prices slowly until they get to that point, which will slowly squeeze out competitors. Otherwise, another streamer will do the same. Maybe... if we're lucky... we end up in a place where there are 3 or 4 major streamers, and subscribing to all of them costs what cable would have cost to begin with.

Hmm, the value of my Plex lifetime pass and unRAID lifetime license seems to be going up. Only subscription needed is for Usenet and that’s still dirt cheap.

Sailing the high seas isn't just cheaper… it's a better experience with all your media in one app, high quality, and the ability to share with friends. At this point Netflix et al could halve their rates and I wouldn't be interested. The only way to fight the enshitifisation game is to not play.

That also addresses the other problem that afflicts a lot of recent streaming shows, which is that they're often either cancelled or stretched out for an inordinate amount of time between seasons. Before investing time in a show it's useful to know whether it will abruptly end mid-story or whether one will still remember the prior story by the time a new season arrives.

Netflix was so much better when they had a good selection of scifi shows filmed in Canada. I guess there's no hope for a return of "the good stuff" now that Amazon owns MGM.
It was better still before they started replacing stuff that was worth watching with Netflix originals. Yes they occasionally make something good, but it’s 90% utter dreck.

If you really wanted to not play, you wouldn't watch their content at all. What you're looking for is a rationalization for taking something you want without paying.

The first rule of usenet is we don't speak about usenet.

"Netflix’s last price hike was in January 2025, when subscribers started paying up to 16 percent more. Before that, Netflix’s most recent price hike was in 2023."

Put another way, "this is Netflix's third price hike in the last three years, increasing around 25 times the rate of inflation over the last decade."
Hack & slash of someone else's graph, updated-ish.

Maybe it's finally time to stop paying Netflix and use that money on Kagi.
That seems completely unrelated... but I too have stopped paying Netflix anything and have started to pay for search at Kagi. I'm willing to spend a reasonable amount of money to a company that provides a great service and obviously respects its users.

Yes, after the fiasco of that Josh Brolin sci-fi show on Amazon, I've started looking up shows on wikipedia to see if they successfully completed their story arc or were canceld before that could happen; if so, I don't bother starting them.

I'm not happy with the price increase but, after youtube, Netflix is my main source of viewing entertainment. I love crime shows and they have a lot of quirky and/or creepy European shows and right now I'm still plugging away on Black-ish, almost done with season 6 with two more to go.
