Well. I went to gamestop today to try and find a Wii (hopeless I know) and was pleasently surprised to see Mass Effect out on the shelves. I more or less ran to the front desk to buy the thing and the guy got as far as ringing it up before his manager was like "DONT SELL THAT!!". Apparently the guy had been selling copies all day and for some reason thought that only the special edition had the 11/20 street date.

I guess I'm the lucky winner of the first person to not get sold Mass Effect today at that Gamestop. Oh well just six more days...

^ Pretty much. The more I read about this, and the likelihood of an extremely delayed PC release, the greater the infection in my brain grows. I’ve begun to seriously consider buying a 360 just for this game, and then perhaps trying to sell it afterwards. I’d be all over buying a used 360 if I hadn’t read such horror stories regarding product failure and warranty transfer.

On one hand, buying a console for one game is crazy. On the other, I’m pretty sure I spent more money on the last graphics card I purchased so I could play Bioshock in all its splendor. Do 360s have any sort of resale value? Could I sell the thing locally with a cash-paid receipt?

/insert expletive laden rant
My brain is melting!

There are PLENTY of 360 only games that wont see the light of day on the PC. Racing games, action games, multiplayer games. Theres more to the 360 than FPS (which are the genre that most PC gamers refuse to switch to 360 for). I think once you buy a 360 and finish mass effect you'll find more things to do on it.

Or Gamefly. Rent games you might find interesting, and go with it. I rented Beautiful Katamari, 'beat' it, played it for a while longer to work on my scores, and said 'see-ya'. I like the Katamari games, but I didn't want to buy it. I got into Gears of War real late (renting, again), played it for a while, decided that by this time I knew a PC version was coming and stopped playing. I'm currently enjoying the hell out of GHIII, and since my surround sound is only hooked up to my TV, getting it for the 360 was an easy choice.

There is some part of me that feels embracing the inability to alter games (via mods, texture swapping etcetera) is akin to selling off little bits of my soul.

Now that I think about it, back in high school I bought a classmate’s soul. Dirt cheap, too. The only condition being that I couldn’t use it in rituals involving goat’s blood. I wonder if I could swap in his soul for mine. That way price of soul-parts could be paid, but mine would be intact.

What do I need to know about purchasing a 360? I don't see why it wouldn't be possible, except maybe the huge world, as that would necessarily take too much time away from building focuses areas with a -purpose- instead of 200 procedurally generated areas/dungeons that you could never tell apart.

Just the trees were. And those weren't generated on the fly, they were pre-generated and dropped onto the disc just like all the other assets.

And, really, most of the actual dungeons were fairly distinct in layout/play, they were just identical in texturing and lighting. In one sense, if you've seen one Ayleid Ruin, you've seen them all; they all share the same materials and light sources. In another, though, each dungeon was hand-crafted as an individual experience.

What were all identical (and obnoxiously so) were the non-dungeon interior spaces. It was fairly silly for all the houses in a given town to have exactly the same interior layout. That got real old, real fast.

The other offender was the Oblivion gates, since the only differences between those were how you got to the tower itself. Each tower, though, was intenrally identical to all the other ones. Those just got to be a chore you blitzed through as fast as possible to collect the orb. No argument from me on this one - I wish these had been procedurally generated, because they would probably have used different seeds to do so, and then they wouldn't all have been the same damn dungeon.
