Trump’s swift demolition of East Wing may have launched asbestos plumes

Hell, past the 40s, it wasn't much less popular. The middle of the 20th century was a fucking wild time. It was like we realized we had all this cool shit like rockets, radioactive elements, PCBs, fission, fusion, asbestos, perchlorates, plastics, CFCs, DDT, you name it, and it was like a race to find as many uses for each of them as imaginable so we could cram them into every possible aspect of modern life before anyone realized they were capable of killing us all, either individually or all at once, often in combination. The friendly atom! Better living through chemistry! Wait, shit, oops
The Hanford Site reports are one hell of a read. They're just page after page of "So, the 1960s nuclear weapons engineers went to the 1960s chemical engineers and asked for a tanker car each of their 20 nastiest most aggressive solvents, then they tried dissolving the radioactive plutonium in each of them, and this one worked but the other 19 didn't, so they dumped them in underground tanks 24 through 43 beside the river and buried it and moved on. Now we're spending $4bn to clean that experiment up." Repeated like 20 times over until they've spent the GDP of a midsize island nation on "toxic radioactive hazmat leaking into the river" abatement.

Of course they did. The Trump admin doesn't give a hoot about the safety of the workers or the public around the area.

On the other hand, I wonder how much airborne dust and particles might have made their way into the White House and its ventilation systems? What's good for the goose...
Trump is to old to care even if it affects him, asbestos is unlikely to have time to kill him before old age does, and if you think he cares for his family, well I doubt that he would understand the question.

Does anyone else wonder if Mike Johnson knew about this, and why he sent house representatives back to their home states? Hmmm.
If you've been paying any attention at all to Mike Johnson, you'd know that he doesn't know anything about it—or just learned about it—so he can't comment. Other than that, it's the fault of the Democrats.

This seems to be a recurring trend. Trump's foes scream about pieces of paper while Trump's friends drive bulldozers through the White House.

The aide said that guys like me were 'in what we call the reality-based community,' which he defined as people who 'believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality.' [...] 'That's not the way the world really works anymore,' he continued. 'We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you're studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. We're history's actors...and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do'.

Where are all those mesothelioma lawyers when we need them?

(Mesothelioma is the type of cancer caused by, and only by, exposure to asbestos).
Asbestos is certainly the leading cause of mesothelioma, but it is not the ONLY cause. We lost a dear friend (only 40 years old) to that disease a couple years ago and there was no way there had been any asbestos exposure to act as a trigger.

I think this is really overreaching a lot. Asbestos lung disease is serious matter, but its not SARS for Christ sake, that you can get it by walking by removal site one time.

Here's the thing about cancer..... Whether or not you get it is largely dependent on genetics and prior exposure to carcinogens. Two people standing next to each other and watching the East Wing get torn down, inhaling the same amount of asbestos, can have two VERY different outcomes depending on the genes they inherited and what they've come across during life.

So claiming that you can't get it by one exposure is bullshit. Maybe not you, but someone can.

Yeah, Hanford may be the apex of mid-century no fucks given.

well, that never stopped Trump.

As for asbestos being safe: yeah, if you never maintain the building, nor tear it down, but also don't let it fall down, then asbestos is safe. "Safe until disturbed" means it's not safe, because buildings get disturbed.
Trump's quote is "safe once applied", which tells you everything you need to know about how he values the lives of mining and construction workers. Asbestos doesn't tend to harm the millionaires and billionaires who live in Manhattan apartments, and that's all that matters.

"There is no confirmation that the Trump admin. followed abatement processes."

At this point, why would anyone entertain the theory that the Trump administration ever considers whether anything they want might be illegal? Steamrolling the law appears to be just another Machiavellian thrill boost for this openly criminal administration.

They’ve just put up a new “renovation” of the White House website

https://www.whitehouse.gov/mysafespace/
I didn't want to click on the link, thinking it was a compromised page or something, but after checking, I went and wow....this is an actual, official US Government White House page. All US tax-payers, citizens and residents really should see this so you can form your own opinion on our government's messaging, priorities and use of tax-payer money.

It's not just one page, either. Have a look at the major events timeline on the 'About the White House' page.

That makes it sound like there it's probable that they followed the law and we are just awaiting confirmation. A more accurate statement would be "it's clear that the Trump admin. did not follow either proper abatement processes nor the law"
Honestly, I think simply changing "confirmation" to "indication" is the only change needed. "There is no indication the administration followed proper. . ." It's truthful. It's not biased, because there isn't any indication they followed it. It's not even innately charged language. It's just straightforward.

You need to sell it differently to make a little dent. Maga mode on: this was an attempt at murdering the president! Biden put the asbestos there on purpose etc. etc. Oh well... why bother.

Capone went down on charges of Tax Evasion. It's usually mundane rule of law stuff that slips past the defenses put up by abusers-of-power and allows them to be brought down.

I definitely feel the frustration though. The man basically stole the damn country, and here we are arguing about building permits.

Asbestos doesn’t recognize hubris, entitlement or malevolent kingship. Neither do the courts, EPA or MDs. A lot of people were harmed, fated to ills and destiny with death in the worst case.
The entirety of the White House will need de-contaminated and systems replaced whole such as HVAC. How ironic that Trump fate should befall at his own hand, in his own industry of expertise and stain the house forever by the ignoramos

Even with all that.... "Asbestos-laden dust and debris from the White House demolition was dumped in a local park" ... and this is not hair on fire news! ... hit me with a new level of incredulity.

The media has been Trump's best friend since 2016. Not just FOX and Newsmax, even NYT and ostensibly liberal/left outlets, pundits, comedians, podcasters, etc have sanewashed his speech, projected their preferred policy positions onto him, and above all treated him as a serious person, while simultaneously refusing to actually report his scandals as such. How many times did we hear about Clinton's emails, or that she was the "Hawk" candidate while Trump was the "Dove"? It's utter insanity, and they do it because every day Trump gave them juicy new bits of clickbait.

They all love him because he's a ragebait generating machine to draw viewers. He makes them shitloads of money. Clinton didn't, and Biden didn't, so instead they relentlessly reported on her emails, Biden's son, and Biden's supposed fall into dementia. They turned these things into massive scandals by sheer volume and frequency of coverage, while Trump just gets one mention on whatever insane thing he does and then the media moves on. And even the freaking GOP congresscritters just get a free pass "I don't know", "I haven't heard about it", "It only just happened and I'm waiting for more information". The press won't hold these people to this crap, they just ask softball questions and never followup because God forbid a right wing snowflake in a position of power get his freaking fee-fees hurt.

Because of course it did. Everything Trump touches turns to shit. He's like king Midas but with coprophilia.
I learned a new work today.
I found out that it did mean what I thought it meant.
I...don't know what to do with this knowledge.
Though Trump is giving me coulrophobia. Though is it really irrational?

(Mesothelioma is the type of cancer caused by, and only by, exposure to asbestos).
Asbestos exposure is not the only cause of mesothelioma. It's just the cause the overwhelming majority of the time so it gets assumed that if you have it it was caused by asbestos, at least in the United States.

https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/29480760/

https://mesothelioma.net/mesothelioma-without-asbestos-a-rare-occurrence/

Exposure to other brittle, fibrous minerals like erionite or mineral-like things (read: carbon nanotubes) can cause mesothelioma as well, as can things like radiation exposure or just bad luck with genetics.
