Mod Edit: Because the discussion in this thread has expanded to include discussion of other Disney-era 'Star Wars' projects (and the franchise in general, and at the request of the OP, I am hereby rename this thread "THAT'S NO MOON, THAT'S A STAR WARS DISCUSSION" (credit: OP).

-------

OK, we are getting close to D-day. Some reviews are coming in and it resulted in me needing to install the Chrome SW Spoiler blocker to try to keep things at bay. So I felt it wise to start an official SW/TFA spoiler thread so non-spoilerific things could exist in the original thread, for at least a few weeks as people finally get to watch things.

So let this thread stand as the testament to all that will be good (or bad) about our beloved seventh installment in the franchise.

My wife follows Carrie Fisher on Twitter and I'm pretty sure she said she got her daughter some bit part walk on in it. I'll have to ask her.

The article I was reading said that her daughter was some sort of Grade B maybe C star in horror and other bad movies, but her characters always wore earmuffs that looked like the Leia's hair buns from the original as a tribute to her mom. I thought that was pretty cool.

Wow her and Carrie Fish are both tiny! 5'1" I never realized.

Billie Lourd, she was one of the main actors on "Scream Queens" Here's some pics from her in SW.

It's Chanel #3! I watch Scream Queens, and they actually wrote in backstory to explain the ear muffs, which are pretty glammed up in the show.

Just got back from the cinema. I thought it was a really fun movie that didn't take itself too seriously. However it didn't blow my socks off, and I think that's because there was a lot of rehashing of scenes from the original trilogy. Once more there is a planet killing superweapon that is taken out by xwings, once more a father and son face off on a bridge over a chasm (though it ends rather differently).

After episodes 1-3 I sort of understand why they felt the need to do that and pay homage to the original trilogy. Hopefully now that they've gotten that out of the way the next two episodes can explore more new ground.

I found Rey & Finn's story arcs really interesting, especially the mystery that still surrounds Rey's background. After all she completely out-forced the son of a Skywalker with no prior training. I'm guessing we'll find out more about that!

Also agree. Was it a bit formulaic, maybe, but it's an epic journey movie. That story is as old as time itself.

I thought it was very much like the OT in feel and destroys the prequels like the Starkiller Base.

Abrams certainly has nothing to be ashamed of and thank god for Lawrence Kasdan!

Also really interested in Rey as well.

And Billie Lourde had an actual line even and her mom presumably gets another infusion of retirement money.

I didn't mind so much of the rehashing, probably part-in-due to how relatively bad Ep 1-3 were. This seemed like a "Lucas this is how you do it" type perspective. Was it a little formulaic, sure, but it is the Star Wars universe and I am not surprised that it went too far out of new ground or people would have complained it was not Star Wars.

I thought it was excellent. I was glad I was not spoiled by anything major. I really liked all the major characters (and even minor characters) stories, from Rey, Finn, even Snoke. I can see why Ford reprised the role because he finally got to see an end to the character. i knew it was going to happen as soon as that scene started, but JJ did it very well.

For me it really is up there. Initial thought is tied with Empire. I'll be watching it again this weekend.

My Ep 8 predictions for Rey
She is the daughter of Luke

Anybody have a link to the opening crawl? I didn't catch all of it, some dip shit was looking for her seat and blinding me with her phone.
Hell I thought it was paced very well, and lots of things happened. But that is just me.

Isn't that just too fucking obvious though?

Leia's child squaring off against Luke's child?

Edit: lol who am I kidding, it's fucking Star Wars, of course they'll do that.

I don't mean it was boring or dragged. It just felt like nothing of substance was happening.

I was hoping against hope that Ben would find redemption but they'd lose Rey to Gollum .. Spork? Snort? What's its name? Who was the old guy in the beginning with the map fragment? I was also hoping that Luke wouldn't make an appearance at all, just because it'd be so funny.

I agree with all of the reviewers (and everyone here) who said that there wasn't a whole lot of originality happening.

But I was 100% okay with that, because it was amazing. It blew me away, start to finish. And yeah, maybe J.J. Abrams is just a master of tapping into our nostalgia. But if a movie can tap into a feeling that makes me experience wonder and joy and humor and sadness and tension...does it matter?

I thought it was spot-on for a movie to launch the next generation of the franchise, just like the Ars review said.

I was seriously expecting them to cut to credits as Rey was climbing the staircase though, before the Luke reveal. I was all "Abrams, you son of a bitch. Don't you do that to me. You just killed Han Solo, you let me see Luke Skywalker's face before you roll credits on this motherfucker!"

rip han solo, killed by ur own son.

Han was always my favorite. Not a happy camper after seeing that.

I figured they were going to kill one of the old characters (I honestly thought it would be Leia), and as soon as she was all "If you see our son, bring him home" or whatever, I was like "Yeah, Han's going to die trying to do that."

Even knowing it was coming, it was still a bit of a gut-punch and I'll admit to choking up a little bit.

I'm sure I could write a lot of *words*, but it wouldn't be anything that others haven't said, and this snippet sums up my feelings really well.

I'm going to take my two girls (9 & 15) to see this at the end of the month.

They haven't seen any of the first 6; from what I've heard, SW:SFA is kinda a fan-service movie (not that there's anything wrong with that!), so would it benefit my kids at all if I forced them to watch IV to VI before we go see this one? Or is it perfectly fine as a standalone story?

Of course, I would delighted if they were desparately keen to watch all of the previous movies beforehand, but they're lukewarm about it. Not that I'm bitterly disappointed or anything...... ;)

(And no, I'm not planning on inflicting the prequels on them)
