oh! I forgot about the upgrade weekend coming up! I reckon I'll have to do some crafting on my main dude and passing it down to the J-crew. My Jem'Hadar character is not in a Klingon fleet so no fleet consoles for a while.

Also, i do have a 4-5 Very Rare Phoenix tokens just sitting that I could use to grab a few things for him too. Thanks for the heads up!

If you need a KDF fleet I'm in a good casual one where everything except the colony is done, colony is at level 4 of 5. I'm not an officer but I think I can do invites.

Also the spoken instructions are given with a processed voice, and in the final battle are given amidst the PUG using all their kit modules and firing weapons so: "You have been phased, so you need to -mumble- -mumble- -mumble-!" Uh, OK, I'll get right on that?

This is one where many of us will need to read a guide or watch a video to get it right.

For a novelty ground item and a pet that sadly is NOT a black cat, I don't think I'll bother. If we got the cat instead of a plant monster I might've grit my teeth and ground it out.

DaveSimmons - Ooh thanks, I'll have too see if I got the Exocomp. I don't think I did and a few years ago I actually typed out a roster of my DOFFs, I haven't updated it in awhile (and admittedly a quick up and down eye scan of DOFF avatars would probably confirm the ponder). :)

And yeah.. next time I do a DOFF mini-event I'm loading a podcast to listen to. I have two alts (a klingon and romulan) and my klingon has so very few science officers.

For KDF they do go to Klingon Academy for the event, and you get the free doff in the area with the banks, mail, and contacts. I think Romulans go to the Fed/KDF area for whichever one they chose.

For Romulans, FYI they can do the free doff recruitment missions at both New Romulas command (for Romulan doffs) and at the KDF/Fed academy, both at the same time.

I'm not an expert, but here are some obvious ones besides Exchange PVP and spending real world cash:

Admiralty and endeavors will bring in a steady flow of credits. Even the easy endeavor is often 50,000.

Farming dil is a roundabout way (dil => zen => lock box keys), though at 50,000 dil per key it's not speedy.

Sell doffs from Free doff recruitment and spares you already have. Sell whites but grind any greens into whites before selling them since 3 x white fetches more than 1 x green. If you have a mountain of unused fleet credits you can trade credits for more doffs, either buying low-level or buying some random VR to replace blues and greens you're using now (then grind those down to white).

If you still need T6-X ship tokens and/or to grind mastery traits the 2-week version of the red alerts event is supposed to start Thursday - https://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star- ... d-alert%21

Even the Tholian alert goes too quickly these days but it's still fun to do it once in awhile. I remember in the before times when you had to scramble to clear all the groups before the timer ran out, and doing it as a fresh level 50 often meant getting webbed to death.

There are nice little benefits besides the 500 zen/month on PC and the Chimera and its other faction reskins:
- 5% XP gain
- space fireworks for a flourish in TFOs
- environment suits for you and crew so you don't need to spend dil or EC on them early on
- 1 android boff per alt with your choice of male/female and tac/sci/eng
- additional free skill respecs for each alt
- woo! Talaxian race unlock! Role-play annoying your friends with horrifically bad food!

It's kind of worth it if you create many alts and/or have a lot of money burning a hole in your pocket, but the Federation 10th Anniversary 10-ship Legendary Bundle is much better for a Federation faction player since you get the main ships from TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager. That bundle should be back sometime before New Years.

https://sto.fandom.com/wiki/10th_Annive ... ip_Bundles

I got my LTS in 2014 so by now I'm $250+ worth of zen ahead on the deal. If you don't expect to be playing for at least 3 years it's much harder to justify.

On the gripping hand, one of the charms of the old Federation starship design is that it IS recognizable. This is not - it looks like something on the cover of some far-future SF novel where the artist didn't really bother to read the manuscript.

It would be fine as a travelling city (a la James Blish) or as a semi-mobile planetary defense fortress or (like you say) from a far-future SF novel like Somtow Sucharitkul's Inquestor series that's ultra-technology or post-technology.

To me it doesn't fit at all as a future Earth space navy vessel only 8 centuries past TNG/DS9/Voy.

I went with the D7 flight desk carrier for one of my KDF captains, since my TOS federation captain already has a Connie: https://sto.fandom.com/wiki/D7_Miracle_ ... ?so=search

I picked a promo pack ship since those have now been priced out of the exchange, while you can get lobi with credits (buying keys or promo packs on the exchange) or dil (buying zen).

It's nice that they are all already fleet level and include the skin unlocks and consoles from the other variants.

If I didn't already own a TOS Connie (promo pack version) for my human TOS captain, along with 7 years of buying other T6 ships (at least 3 fed ships per fed captain), I'd have bought it by now. Besides the Connies you also get the Defiant and Voyager for when you want cannons or (magnus pyke) SCIENCE!

If you didn't log in yesterday, apparently the T6 coupon is available for 30 days?

Anyway that new TFO is pleasantly trivial. A bunch of little ships, and one mild blocker mechanic at the end. Felt like a setup for some plot point that wasn't fully baked yet, but I won't have a problem doing that one 20 times.

Yes, I was pleasantly surprised by the reasonable length and lack of any annoying mechanics.

Cryptic using the golden opportunity to improve old content? Not in a million years.

Once in a while the impossible does happen:

"Janeway has also been retroactively added to the Delta Quadrant missions that feature most of the rest of the cast of Star Trek: Voyager. You'll find the Admiral directing you on missions throughout that entire storyarc."

https://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star- ... is-live%21

Noob question: is there any reason to keep "old" ships? I've got a few ships clogging my dry dock that are less sub T5. Can I safely trash those or do they need to stick around for admiralty cards or something?

Normally you only need to keep them until their admiralty card is unlocked when you reach that level.

One reason you might need to keep one is if it unlocks its skin for a T6 ship, and you like that skin. Many/most T1-T5 skin unlocks are free for T6 even if you've never owned the ship but there are a few exceptions and I'm not sure whether deleting a ship deletes the unlock. TL;DR unless you really like that ship's look and plan to get the T6 version, you can delete the lower-level ship without checking the wiki about skin unlocks.

Also, any T6 zen store ships in dry dock can be deleted since you can reclaim them, and the same with event ships (summer, winter, anniversary). Just never delete lobi / lock box / promo pack ships.

I've kept a couple of the leveling ships. When you've been in the game a certain length of time you'll find you're buying extra T4/T5 ships for admiralty purposes (and deleting them from inv as soon as they populate there). But yeah eventually you'll buy drydock space.

I had a really really weird event TFO over the weekend. 3x more rifts, beefier enemies, crazy spawns. It was L65 like all my other recent ones, and I didn't think the events had hard-mode options (which I certainly didn't pick). I thought they had buffed it, but then the next day it was back to normal. What am I missing?

I had a tougher one Sunday or Monday too, I forget which. My guess was that I was in a really low DPS group, so the rifts stayed open and spawned a bunch more enemies, but I'm focused on my own work so I wasn't watching the others.

The non-legendary Mirror 12th anniversary bundle details are live - https://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star- ... -bundle%21

13,125 zen for 5 x mirror ships and some costume pieces. Or buy 4 of the 5 separately (not the Engle) for 2400 zen each.

The Terran Adamant Heavy Raider includes a new experimental weapon, a 135-degree-arc rapid kinetic launcher. If the visuals look nice I might buy this ship just for that.

Wow a bundle that is almost reasonably priced, where you can buy the ships separately, and not locked up in gamble boxes? Did someone take the Cryptic C-suite hostage?

:) they're probably being nicer with this one than usual since Mirror ships are less popular and they save a fair bit of work by reskinning and reselling the fed versions.

If you aren't in the Ars fleet we can add all of your Fed characters. All of the holdings are max level so all the gear and special bridge officers are available. It's a quiet fleet without any group activities though. Not that STO has raids.

If you need a KDF fleet, the one I'm in is max level except for the last 2 upgrades to the colony (Morale 5 and overall 5).

For gear upgrades: buy 10-packs of Phoenix boxes, open them, buy upgrade tokens, done.

I was fond of EM Pulse Probe back in 2014, so it might be time to bust out the intel spec ships in my fleet again. There will probably be some new lock box or lobi intel ships coming out but I can't stand those Discovery 32nd Century floaty parts ships.

Console players: the daily free giveaways for the 12th anniversary will probably begin on 3-10 (Thursday). On PC there were 6 including a T5 ship coupon that's handy for unlocking the Vulcan shuttle, Andorian blue phasers, or a ship skin or console that you want. Each giveaway only last 24 hours.

Cryptic has suddenly noticed that the Dil market is completely off the rails and has taken the bold step of...turning Rep completion Dil into a kind of bastard Dil you can only spend on Rep gear. The idea of adding something you might actually want to spend Dil on (other than Zen) has apparently not occurred to them yet.

https://www.arcgames.com/en/forums/star ... -dilithium

This makes sense even though the farmers will hate it.

If I wanted to I could get enough rep marks boxes from the Temporal/Delta/Dominion/Klingon recruit rewards to get a new alt to reputation tier 5 without actually playing the game, then get the 500K dil reward. Delete the alt, rinse and repeat.

I have a real job so I have no interest in switching to dil farming but some people have more free time than spending money and so we have the dil exchange pegged at 500.

I don't disagree that the game really needs more dil sinks, but dil production from admiralty, event extra days, random TFOs, and the classics of contraband and reputations is out of control.

I just finished downloading the game and update. Is there any good, up to date guides on what to do? And what’s the difference between Discovery, TOS, and regular Starfleet?

Regular is a post-Voyager era captain. TOS and Discovery captains start out in those eras then end up in the post-Voyager era thanks to timey-wimey stuff.

All 3 have somewhat different user interface skins and sound effects.

TOS has a half-dozen episodes set in the TOS era with a couple of TOS crew showing up before timey-wimey occurs. If you sell all your loot you can also pick up some mark 1 TOS ground weapons (pink beam phaser rifle, blue hand phasers) but if you are in Ars fleet I think you can get them at the K-13 fleet holding too.

Disco has a Disco tutorial with Tilly.

After the time jump, everyone plays the same episodes.

There will be a re-run of the TOS (temporal) Recruitment Event sometime during the next year. If you create a brand-new TOS captain during that event they earn some nice account-wide unlocks. That might be a reason to hold off on creating a TOS captain, but if you are a TOS fan you might want to create a second captain anyway.

Delta Recruitment returns to PC on 5-10. This requires creating a 2410 / "regular" fed, Romulan, or KDF once the event starts. You need to play long enough to get a shiny gold event device (finish tutorials) then you can take as many years as you want to complete the event task list to earn account unlocks. It won't work to create a TOS or Discovery fed captain or a Jem'Hadar. (There are also separate recruitment events for creating a new Jem'Hadar and new TOS captain, Disco has no event.)

https://www.arcgames.com/en/games/star- ... eds-you%21

There is separate Klingon recruitment even that will run sometime in the next year, so it makes the most sense to create a regular fed or a Romulan captain not KDF. Technically you can add a few more very minor account unlocks by creating all 3 but the rewards are so small it's not really worth it to have 2 KDF captains just for that. If you want to play both regular fed and Romulan then you could create both during the event and make just enough progress to get the gold shiny. The Romulan story arc is good and there are a good number of story episodes that only the Romulans get to play.

> what's the new event?

Eeeevil Kuumaarke!

A buddy of mine who plays off and on told me wait to create a character until the 10th because of the delta recruitment thing. Probably going Federation first with an engineering captain and the goal is to eventually get the Vengeance class if possible. Not sure if that pairing works or not, but my buddy says an engineering captain would probably be my preferred build choice and I really like the Vengeance.

Also, I’m re-learning why I hate fandom.wiki. With out an ad and script blocker, it’s a pain to navigate.

Engineer is nice for new players because the captain magic powers are about healing and damage resistance. It's also fun to play for ground combat because you can create drones, turrets, mortars, shield and medical generators, mines. All that distracts the enemies from targeting you which also helps with survivability.

Any captain can fly any ship type. Eng captains buff defense a little, tac buff attack, science buffs space magic.

Ew. Who are these weirdos with snakes floating around their heads, and why would I ever want to cosplay as one?

Oh, it's probably current Trek, so don't bother answering. Well, that's another month to concentrate on HI3 and WoW. At this rate I'll be fully in the mood for the summer event when it comes up. Love that beach life.

One reason to do the daily is if you are working on the multi-event campaign to get a free promo pack ship, lock box ship, or pile of lobi. If you aren't doing that and don't care about the Evil Kuumaarke Evil Outfit then skip away!

Also, Fashion Trek Online is real. I think I spent half my 5 hours making a custom alien.

"Space Barbie is the real endgame."

It's true: creating a captain, crew, ship and gear to fit a theme is a large part of the fun for those of us not trying to climb the DPS charts. It's also how many of us who aren't dil farmers still end up with 10+ different captains.

Making mistakes is part of the fun :)

The TOS captain can only be human, vulcan, andorian, and...tellerite?...even if you unlock other races like catian-totally-not-Kzinti, liberated borg, or talaxian chef. Try creating a TOS to see the races.

Tractors are nasty at low levels. The ways to escape are Evasive Maneuvers (not sure what level you get it at) or more reliably teaching your science bridge officer the Polarize Hull skill.

Mortars are handy on the ground if you can set them up before entering combat.

Very few episodes use static or the flashlight, and only one raid I can think of (Romulan station).

> I now have 2 borg packs I can’t currently use and no Zeni. Borg engineer I am using is female and called 6 of 9… Nice.

Are the packs listed as bound to character, bound to account, or neither? If not bound, you can sell them on the exchange for a small mountain of Energy Credits to use to buy other things. If bound to character, support might refund your zen since you can't use them.

> I can’t tell if this poor UI or dumb thing #4. Clicked on the transwarp button on the top mission. Do mission with a strong sense I’m missing some context in regards to the story. Do next mission. Oh heyyyy, this is most the stuff they were referring to from the previous mission. Why is there a ‘to be continued’? Click around some menus and find I did missions 4 & 3 of the Terran Gambit…

It's a really dumb UI decision. You get offered hails from people offering you missions from a bunch of different story arcs at once, instead of just from the first arc. The mission journal shows you all of the different story arcs in order so you can play them in that correct order if you want.

The only out-of-order episodes you might want to do are the ones for the current event, but you can do the raids / Task Force Operations instead if your level is high enough.

I don’t see the option to train my bridge crew.

You can buy training manuals for energy credits from vendors, for fed on earth spacedock it's a person to the right and underneath Admiral Quinn: https://sto.fandom.com/wiki/Training_Manual?so=search

Your bridge officers start off as Ensign and can only learn the common rank skills that match their profession. As you promote the boff they can learn the higher ranks.

It costs expertise accumulated from playing to train them so don't train more than you need to at first.

You can feed a spare boff into a blender to make a delicious slurry that teaches another boff a skill once they drink it down. Yum!

And level 65! Onto grinding for the Vengeance.

Some notes:
As they add more things to do (duty officers, admiralty stuff, etc) things get more convoluted. Not all the symbols on the UI have pop-up tooltips when you hover over them and I just have to guess at it.

New Romulan arc was painful. Very Burning Crusade era World of Warcraft area with obligatory fetch quests. Nimbus III wasn’t much better, but had the advantage of being shorter and in a more compact area.

Encountered 2 Vengeance’s and a Legendary Scimitar on one of the Voth battlegrounds instances. I managed just over 4000 damage through the whole thing as they were smacking down entire waves in under 2 seconds. It was impressive as it was annoying, because I had a Endeavor to finish.

Talaxians aside, is the Delta Quadrant just full of assholes? Are the Talaxians Star Treks version of Hobbits?

Found a bug in the Delta Quadrant arc. There is a countdown until the defense grid you repair comes back online. Reinforcements arrive, counter hits 0 and nothing. Apparently the trigger for that mission is broke. I had to hit up one of my buddies to figure out how to submit a bug report. Would not of thought to look under ‘character’ for a mission bug.

Congrats! Keep in mind that all the daily grind stuff is optional -- don't feel like you "have to" do admiralty, duty officers, endeavors, anything at all. Do it while it seems fun then stop. Reputations are worth working on if you want any of the gear or (after a long grind) their vanity shield and free fleet module for getting the fleet version of a ship if it exists.
