Star Trek Online (Now for free and people are still playing!)

As someone who plays on Linux via Proton this makes me nervous. Lighting 2.0 took some time to stabilize for me and this change is concerning.

Someone in the STO forums said: "Proton would be using the DX 11 path now... so no effect. If your playing STO on Linux today I don't see how this would change anything for the worse anyway."

DX11 dates back to 2008, so that's plausible.

So I started a new temporal science officer for the event (plus I've not really played science before) with the intent of putting her into the Dyson Science Destroyer eventually. For now she's tooling around in the temporal science ship (she's only level 15) and I must admit it's quite fun having so many clicky powers (vice only things that you bash spacebar for). For now it's all about those shield drains to hit em with the torpedoes for the take down.

I've actually come to realize that my Star Trek itch for wanting to watch the shows is being met with simply playing through the STO missions again after not playing them for several years. It's honestly been pretty fun.

Speaking of fun, I got my 10 year old interested in trying and I'm happy to report he made it through the tutorial (a difficult thing as it's very slow going to keep a 10 year old's attention). Once he got to earth space dock and redeemed his temporal loot box full of Mk 4 cannons, we decked him out for a tactical cannon build using only the bit of money he's earned up to that point. I'm purposely trying to not make the game too easy by dumping equipment on him as I feel that kills the enjoyment of a new game instead of earning his victories. He's giddy with excitement when he cranks out cannon rapid fire and nukes single targets. He's still learning how to pilot effectively but does really well when he gets nose on target. He's not a fan of ground combat, though playing it with 'FPS' mode at least helps keep it a bit more engaging.

Overall, this was a very STO heavy weekend and couldn't be happier.

In the past I would have agreed with that general sentiment but the new ground tfo for the event has absolute swarms of ensigns and lieutenants who I absolutely melt with my now 6 module sci who is all aoe. I think I am killing at least one enemy combatant per second on average. It's unclear to me how this is not a war crime, but my legal team believes that I can make the claim that they aren't real people because they are from an alternate universe.

So they're announcing a new ship to spend money on. I haven't put anything into this game for 8-9 months, and gosh the stuff on the Steamrunner T6 looks tempting.

Any thoughts from experts? It's going to be somewhere around 3300 during the initial sale period. It's relatively attractive. The drill is v.silly but it channels my favorite FF14 attack perfectly. Dunno about the tricobalt tear console (how fast does it recharge?) but the trait looks kickass.

...and it's got to be better than blowing thirty bucks on Genshin Impact. I whine about STO monetization in here a lot, but daaaaaamn is GI insane. Pretty. Fun. But insane.

That Tricobalt console looks power creep as heck. +200 Shield/Armor pen is pretty sweet too.

Yeah. Definitely looks like it's trying to make everyone take at least a single torp these days. Will have to wait to see the numbers run but it's hard to imagine a scenario where that console isn't going to be pretty freaking great even if it gets nerfed by 50%.

I'm sensing an unusual consensus in the forum, as if legions of wallets suddenly emptied themselves at once.

Honestly in about 2.5 years (not continuous) of playing this game, this is the first time their design and marketing and accounting has all fully aligned with my interests and spending preferences. Someday they'll drop a new legendary ship and I'll actually pay for it, but that hasn't happened yet.

The lightning bolt default weapon messes up Space Barbie for many of my ships.
That's the single reason I used some of my zen on the Caitian shish kabob - to get the railgun for space barbie. It's not a good experimental weapon but it's visuals fit for me personally with my fed ships that aren't designed to be dps queens.

Do torp consoles count as Torps or the purpose of traits, guess I've never really seen a note on that?

I guess I am a little surprised that the torp is a console instead of an experimental weapon (obv. a move to improve its utility and demand). The experimental weapon, being a single target DOT is pretty useless simply due to the speed at which things are destroyed.

Speaking of the railgun and experimental weapons, this post is well done - https://www.reddit.com/r/sto/comments/k ... g_results/. I typically just use VoP or the railgun (it was also a surprise in the legendary bundle), but only one of my toons is running a Escort atm. I also didn't do the summer event, whoops.

Experimental Proton Charge - Lobi ship
Soliton Wave Impeller - 2021 Summer Ship / Mudd
Phlogiston Projector - Lobi (M. Raider) / Mudd
Experimental Protomatter-Laced Sheller - T6 lockbox
Subatomic Field Disruptor - Zen

I have no idea what anything I have equipped does.
Just push all the buttons. In no particular order. You will be fine.

If you want to build a killer ground or ship toon after you get up to speed with all the systems let us know, we are happy to help!

Lol yeah that's pretty much what I've been doing, between a couple of my engineer traits/skills I'm pretty well unkillable save a couple of those insta-kill weapons on the boss ships. Just need to keep grinding ship xp on the alliance battle cruiser, I love that bastard child of Klingon/Federation tech.

Yeah, I have a couple of well optimized power builds...that I never fly because I'm still leveling up some event ship to unlock the trait that I'm not even going to use.

So still trying to learn how to fly better with my Jem'Hadar tactical officer using cannons...and getting smoked bad even in normal patrols. I guess I'm not understanding how to mitigate the heat I get from using the cannon spread ability. Since this is a freshly leveled-to-65 character, he doesn't have any end game gear but has very rare Mk12 gear at least.

I've been trying simple hit and run tactics but those work best with Cannon rapid fire to focus down a single target which is fine but really drags out fights with rapid fire only being available every 30 sec. I still have the default build of a torpedo on the backside and it actually works really well with hit and run as I can drop shields and do decent damage going in, then turn around and hit with the torpedo running back. Inefficient for raw DPS I know, but mostly-works to keep my alive. Side question: do torpedo abilities work with multiple torpedos? So if I pop Torpedo Spread does it work for both my front and rear torpedos so each one gets an upgraded attack?

The other weirdness I've noticed is that even when I turn to run away it seems like enemies torpedos track past the 10KM range of typical targeting. More than once I think I escape with no hull and a random torpedo seems to follow me past the 10KM mark and kill me. I'm assuming it's lag but not sure....

Torpedo range is from the point fired; moving after that does nothing, I think.

The space game is ultimately very arcade-y. The original X-Wing was a more "realistic" space physics simulation than this. Expect the abilities to do exactly what they say they do when the button is pressed, regardless of common sense.

This doesn't make it less fun, or less about math, but the flying around part is not a hypertechnical sim.

Fair enough. Plus, it is an MMO so they have to simplify what comes and goes to the server and what kind of processing needs to get done.

I remember when I was in the Asheron's Call beta they used to have arrows 'free aim' so they shot where you pointed. At some point they changed it so they were homing missiles to whatever you targeted as long as the target was in your front arc.

Yeah, early on AOE isn't great for survivability. I'd recommend looking at A2B and Photonic officer builds, you have to mitigate recharge times to be successful.

Upgrade weekend Oct. 7th? Phoenix upgrades and MK II gear for best chances to upgrade.

oh! I forgot about the upgrade weekend coming up! I reckon I'll have to do some crafting on my main dude and passing it down to the J-crew. My Jem'Hadar character is not in a Klingon fleet so no fleet consoles for a while.

Also, i do have a 4-5 Very Rare Phoenix tokens just sitting that I could use to grab a few things for him too. Thanks for the heads up!

If you need a KDF fleet I'm in a good casual one where everything except the colony is done, colony is at level 4 of 5. I'm not an officer but I think I can do invites.

Based on this post, I decided to try it out.

Holy shit, that is a target rich environment. I'm running a tac captain, with things like chroniton microtorpedo spread and temporal defense pistols. Elevator doors open, everyone in the elevator dies. Maybe half my kit is stuff intended to fuck up heavy targets, but just the trash killing half of my stuff utterly murders things. It's disgusting. Admiral Quinn has a bad day, over and over and over. It's so goddamn overkill that the "oh shit" mode on my Na'khul shield didn't even trigger, and I basically just found a good place to stand, went into aim mode, and channeled my inner turret.

Totally unrelated, I bought a wing of elite scorpions for my strike wing escort.

Those are not fair, in a good way. So many heavy plasma torpedoes. I should have bought them a long time ago, they punch like mad for something that's basically a novelty slot on non-carriers.

EDIT: I learned a thing. Heavy plasma torpedoes don't go away when their target dies. They switch to chasing whatever you target next. This includes the HPTs from your fighters. I'm not sure what their duration or range is, but it's not inconsequential. I've had them just hang in space, waiting for me to target something. The consequences of this can involve some very Bad Things™.

Oof, the new TF kinda sucks. It has all of the things that make for an annoying TF. It's long. There are enemies with non-obvious (ok, they will probably be obvious to you, but PUG players may never figure it out even if you tell them) invincibility mechanics, sections where the team is split. Non-combat gameplay (sorting books by type, which is impossible for some players, they'll just keep randomly guessing or be trapped forever), and in-combat status effects you need to pay attention to. Unlike other TFs there isn't an instruction page at the start either, you have to figure it out as you play. The scoring is based on side objectives. If you're in there with 4 other people who only know the "1" key it can be a real slog.

The good news is that the reward is a ground item and it doesn't count for the campaign progress so if you want to sit it out you can.

Also the spoken instructions are given with a processed voice, and in the final battle are given amidst the PUG using all their kit modules and firing weapons so: "You have been phased, so you need to -mumble- -mumble- -mumble-!" Uh, OK, I'll get right on that?

This is one where many of us will need to read a guide or watch a video to get it right.

For a novelty ground item and a pet that sadly is NOT a black cat, I don't think I'll bother. If we got the cat instead of a plant monster I might've grit my teeth and ground it out.

At StarFleet Academy - You can earn three different types of quality duty officers.
(not sure if there is an event at the Klingon homeworld or/and New Romulus)

So the following is for the StarFleet Academy
- There is this; get a cadet ( you can choose; engineering, science, and the other 'tactical'?) basically you speak to this professor who will be outside / opposite the cafeteria at the bank - though there is no exit in the cafeteria so you'll have to use the main exit and just walk up)

From there you scan these blue ball anomalies; you'll get 4 outcomes
( 1 - nothing, 2 a holographic opponent (I've found a good melee weapon works best, but if you want to let loose with what ever you go ahead, also you can use a combat pet to help, and other players and their cadets are free to help) that your cadet will help fight with their phaser, and an expanding - use the Metreon option or decreasing use the option that starts with a P)

Beating the holographic opponent (For starfleet academy it's a Klingon warrior) will get you one Particle
Scanning/collecting an expanding or decreasing particle will get you two particles.

25 - gets you an uncommon duty officer
50 - gets you a rare duty officer
75 - gets you a very rare duty officer

Once you get 75 it asks that you turn it in to the professor (where for the lower two ammounts it just mentions you could earn the next level of duty officer by collecting more particles). I don't know what happens when you build up to 100, maybe the extra will just be in your inventory.

All the particles pool up on one box in your main carry inventory.

Once you turn it in you get a box (once clicked its bound to your character / I wonder if one can sell them at the exchange.. I wouldn't mind trying to earn some stuff (Lobi if posible) perhaps for that new pastel 'Lower Deck' outfit.

They species of the cadet you pick for escort does not determine what the species of the Duty Officer you'll get. Though the specialty of the escort you pick will determine the type (engineering, science, tactical) of Duty Officer you get.

For Starfleet academy I found out of the way areas easy to work (in terms of just aesthetic/ having to not have NPCs walking about. .though they will clear out if an hologram opponent appear) with.. the spawn rate is actually pretty fast. I didn't time it, but it felt like it was around half a minute before another spawned at the same location.

Also the hologram opponent will chase you, one player was running and me and other players (and our escorting cadets) ended up chasing and shooting it as the 'player that summoned it' tried to find a place to hide.

DaveSimmons - Ooh thanks, I'll have too see if I got the Exocomp. I don't think I did and a few years ago I actually typed out a roster of my DOFFs, I haven't updated it in awhile (and admittedly a quick up and down eye scan of DOFF avatars would probably confirm the ponder). :)

And yeah.. next time I do a DOFF mini-event I'm loading a podcast to listen to. I have two alts (a klingon and romulan) and my klingon has so very few science officers.

For KDF they do go to Klingon Academy for the event, and you get the free doff in the area with the banks, mail, and contacts. I think Romulans go to the Fed/KDF area for whichever one they chose.

For Romulans, FYI they can do the free doff recruitment missions at both New Romulas command (for Romulan doffs) and at the KDF/Fed academy, both at the same time.
