IMHO one of the key aspects of the Nintendo handhelds was the relative small screens coupled with lower screen resolutions. This enabled the handheld's batteries to last way longer than say a smartphone pushing an 1080p screen when it comes to gaming. It also had the effect of letting Nintendo and third party developers to create less graphically intensive games (gentler on the battery too) This allowed for slightly faster development, which finally brings me to my point.

If the NX ends up being tablet sized (Including the space of the controller)Nintendo can squeeze in a smaller screen than what you normally get in a 7 to 10 inch sized tablet and still get better specs resolution and performance than the new 3DS while keeping battery life reasonable. (Because they can stuff a much bigger battery in a tablet like form factor)

If this is the case it will all come down to the games and we all know Nintendo's first party games alone will drive sales. That is unless they somehow botch the games or do something unexpectedly egregious to scare away third party developer support.

(Update:) After watching the video I think the video screen is more or less pushing an HD signal, we'd have to wait for word on battery life but seeing as they kept showing the unit docked I'm not too hopeful on a great battery life.

That said with that screen size its games are going to look significantly better than what the 3Ds can offer so i'm kinda torn.

This actually looks promising! Rather than make another console that overly relies on gimmicky features Nintendo has opted to go for the convenience and ease of use that supporting many styles and ways of play can provide.
It got me at how many ways you can use the controllers and that you can use those side controllers for playing with a friend (On games with simpler controls)

Now all we need is a strong initial game lineup.
