I'm not that far into the game (I'm not rushing, taking it slow) and enjoying things so far. Perhaps I'm not far along enough yet to grasp the whole "ZOMG OMG OMG OMG! Mass Effect has an interesting universe. The fingerprints of many classic sci-fi books are pretty much all over it's galaxy.

I am reminded especially of (HINT: you should read these if you haven't -- View image here: http://episteme.meincmagazine.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif -- )...

David Brin's Uplift Saga - Humanity joins a thousands-of-years established galactic community and is immediately resented for getting privileges that other species have waited thousands of years for and not received. The community has a few powerful and influential species and many minor ones and political backstabbing and maneuvering are established modus operandi for species who wish to advance in the community.

Dune - Hmmmm, giant sandworms? That's original. -- View image here: http://episteme.meincmagazine.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_wink.gif -- Again, the emphasis on political gains in a universe with thousands of years of history and background. The original concept of advanced human evolution allowing for special powers started here, long before Star Wars and the Force made special powers popular.

2001: A Space Odyssey - humanity finds an artifact on Mars which rapidly accelerates their technological development. The artifact is left behind by a long-extinct, hyper-advanced species who vanished millenia ago but who are the key to understanding the galaxy and humanity's place in it, including their origins and the origins of all sentient life.

The Foundation Saga - another famous series which features science and evolution giving humans special powers. The idea of establishing an incubator society for restoring the future of civilization after a galactic Dark Age begins here.

There's more, but I would rather keep playing the game rather than talk about it much more. -- View image here: http://episteme.meincmagazine.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif --

Ummmm, I'm playing as a Vanguard my first time through, and the Vanguard is a combat class. The biggest problem I have with Mass Effect is the loading.

And the loading.

Also, the loading.

Sometimes it randomly loads just for fun. I will run down a hall and all of a sudden the game will pause and say Loading.

Also, the stupid elevators to disguise loading in some contiguous areas. Which doesn't make sense to me since as I mentioned it will still load at random in some areas by pausing for a moment to say Loading while you are in mid-run. At least in the elevators there will be some random radio report or the characters might have a short conversation with each other. But it's still annoying. The stupid elevator inside the Normandy is the worst. Why couldn't Bioware just redesign the Normandy's interior to make the ship smaller so it could all fit into memory and not require you to ride a fucking elevator to see both halves of it?

View image: http://students.washington.edu/lzone/20071116.jpg

I do find it funny that Tycho or Gabe, whoever drew that particular comic, uses the same party I like, with Wrex and Garrus.

Well, I'm about 14 hours in according to the game clock, I haven't been doing a lot of the side quests, but I'm kinda worried I'm near the actual end of the game. In a similar way to KOTOR, when you think the games over, but there is still a lot more? I'm getting that sense, but I don't think there is really more.

If this is it, its going to be somewhat disappointing.

Somehow I got a point in intimidation despite having no intention of putting one there on this playthrough. That's annoying.

My original goal was to do as much exploration as possible before doing the main quest items.
