Here's how I'm laying it out.

All I know about Mass Effect is what I've learned from the various video trailers online / at trade shows. I've read abit about it but haven't been following it all that much.

I ordered the Collectors Edition on Friday. Purely based on how fun the game looks and how much hype the hive mind has been giving it, because if something sucks, usually people aren't afraid to say it.

It should be here monday/tuesday. You asses better be right about this one -- View image here: https://cdn.arstechnica.net/forum/smilies/biggrin.gif -- -- View image here: https://cdn.arstechnica.net/forum/smilies/gavel.gif --

- CG

It's fun enough so far. Claims of greatest game ever are vastly overstated. There's far too much running back and forth for the optional quests, and there's a bit of a lack of polish that's uncharacteristic for Bioware. This is one game that you really should read up on the mechanics before you play because you get very little in the way of in-game instruction.

So far I'd say it's well worth a buy, but I'm hoping it gets better.

WARNING: Do not consume Shrubber on an emppty stomach, may cause vommiting, diaherrea, flatulence, more vomitting, ear spasms, and possibley imputence.

aka, shrubber is a big whiney cynic on IRC, so if he gives it this much of a glowing review, it must be awesome! <3

- CG

Any site that rates Assassins Creed higher than Mass Effect is a site that does not have anything to offer me.

Eeee... yea. You're probably not going to like my assessment then. Mass Effect is an amazing game, a pinnacle of the story-telling power of the entire medium of video games, but the lack of polish and technical limitations are ever-present and impossible to ignore. Don't take that the wrong way; it's more of a Shadow of the Colossus style problem, where the limitations of the engine mar but don't necessarily defeat the core of the game. At least in my opinion.

I will say this, though. The last two hours of the game are freaking awesome.

@_@ you've beaten it already!?

I really can't understand people who buy a $60-80 game and are done with it under a week, seems like a waste to me x_X

I haven't opened it yet, I'm almost afraid too. I like Assassins Creed, I don't care what the reviews say, I'm really enjoying it (it helps that I'm playing it at my own pace, and taking my time, as Gabe on Penny Arcade has stated, rushing = bad).

- CG

I'm not that far into the game (I'm not rushing, taking it slow) and enjoying things so far. Perhaps I'm not far along enough yet to grasp the whole "ZOMG OMG OMG OMG! GAME OF THE YEAR" vibe about it.

It's interesting, has some different things about it (the menus in squad based stuff, etc), yet I don't feel it sucking me in nearly as much as Assassins Creed is, but maybe that's me.

So far, it's a good game, I'd definetley recommend people pick it up, whether ot not it's zomg 10/10, is another story -- View image here: http://episteme.meincmagazine.com/groupee_common/emoticons/icon_smile.gif --

The only gripes I've noticed so far as the circle menus are twitchy as hell, they work fine in principle, I just wish they weren't so twitchy with the joystick. Also it seems a little stuttery at times, or maybe that's texture pop-in all over the place :p

- CG
