Is Babylon 5 Worth Watching?

Thanks to this thread I decided to start watching Babylon 5 (I'd never seen it before, though had heard good things). I've finished the first season and really enjoyed it, looking forward to making my way through the rest of it!
You know the throwaway line at the end of S1 about Garibaldi always being in the elevator?
Every single time she called for an elevator during the entire season, he walked off. Every time.

Oh, man, Morden - there's a character. Not terribly deep, but oh so hatable.
He'd make a great game show host, though. Wheel of Misfortune, or something like that.
Ed Wassner, who played Mr. Morden, retired from acting to open up a construction company and now works as a general contractor.

I can't imagine using him for any building project myself, though, as the first question any contractor is going to ask is "What do you want?"

There is somehow so much sci-fi that I have never managed to watch even though I'm a fan of sci-fi. I'm just on season two of DS9, made it through 1.5 of BSG, never watched past the first episode of Babylon 5, only watched three or four seasons of ST:TNG, and only one of Voyager. Made it through all of Picard, only some of Discovery, none of Farscape, just the movie for Firefly, all of the Mandalorian and of Book of Boba Fett, but none of most of the other series (yes, watching The Acolyte). Somehow my timeline got all screwed up while I was overseas in the Air Force with year behind betamax tapes, then college and law school and kids, and now, so much to catch up on. Sigh.

There was lots of stuff in the late eighties and all of the nineties I was either late to, or did not see until after it was done. Firefly was more like, "hey wasn't there a show..." I thought it was my imagination. With B5, I only ever caught bits and pieces and had wild misconceptions about the show. When I finally did get around to seeing it I was like "oh, I see..."

With American Gothic, I think someone gifted me the DVD box set which is how I knew about it. This is not a science fiction series. It is horror, and a really great series. Underrated in the sense I never hear anyone talking about it.

As Soothsayer said, the whole thing was planned in advance by one guy, so it’s like watching an epic novel unfold. Every little crumb of information or character pays off later in the show, sometimes even years later. Disappointed by the endings of Lost or Battlestar Galactica? Babylon 5 will not do that to you.
I would agree with this 100% if the show ended at Season 4. Season 5 was.... not great.

It definitely wasn't up to standards, but it wasn't JMS' fault. He wanted to get it to an end point due to cancellation threat, then it wasn't canceled, and there was only so much material left.

Space: Above and Beyond, there's a show I've not thought of in a minute. Like you said, Marine pliots in Hammerhead fighters vs. the alien Chigs. IIRC, there were natural born humans, genetically engineered humans grown in vats (supposed to be super soldiers), and renegade androids created by humans. The androids started the whole war with the Chigs to get revenge on humans.

Two of the X-Files writers were behind the show. Like most sci-fi on Fox, it got the axe after a single season.

I assume the rights must be a mess, since I've not seen it streaming anywhere.

That felt like some real Wild West times as far as TV sausage-making went. The end of PTEN, the rise of WB & UPN, TNT making the save. Crazy stuff.

And for the folks new to the show; if you want the full show experience, you also need to read the B5 Lurkers Guide http://www.midwinter.com/lurk/index.html (Praise Zathras it still exists to this day)

That one never really clicked for me. It's been a while, but vaguely I remember that it seemed like they were trying to make two separate shows, one focused on boots-on-the-ground grunts and the other focused on zoomie fighter action, and using the same cast of characters for both halves didn't really work.

And yet, somehow, in spite of being not great, that season 5 ending still managed to not disappoint... After all, the epilogue doesn't need the same kind of ending as the epic does.

Of course if I remember correctly that episode was filmed during season 4 and would have been shown if they hadn't renewed it for a 5th season. So technically was a part of season 4.

you are kinda stirring a need to watch this... yet again. I have seen it several times and have all... most? of the movies including the recent animated movie. There is one movie I believe I do not have because it was not a very good Cthulu homage.

This is interesting

I made it a couple of episodes into season 5 before it left the streing service. Good stuff.
It'll probably be back. It tends to disappear at the end of the month and then reappear a few days later.

Almost like the streaming service's licensing fee is being held up in snail mail each month.

Please tell me you skipped ahead to the finale! The rest of season 5 is eminently missable, but it’s one of the all-time great final episodes (originally filmed to be the end of season 4, then plopped at the end of season 5 when the show was surprise renewed).

Sorry, I didn't see the notice about it leaving in enough time. I'll check JustWatch in a bit to see if I've got access to wherever it's streaming now (usually these things move around).

Yeah, some of them were fine. But none of them were great, like so many were in seasons 2-4.
Yeah, but the Londo ones (in particular) tie up his storyline and the "fine" ones are still worth watching, IMO :) The Londo and G'Kar storylines are gold, worth watching.

Also, don't forget the various movies if you haven't seen them.

The movies range from ok to terrible. You get the great Londo monologue about the earth-minbari war to the absolute pants on head stupid karate powered targeting system.

Every single time she called for an elevator during the entire season, he walked off. Every time.

Unfortunately, all of this is a little less funny when you know the story behind it. Jerry Doyle was an alcoholic creep, and he had a thing for Andrea Thompson, so he liked to read the scripts and talk to the crew to know when they were shooting scenes with Talia waiting for the elevator, and then he'd hide behind the doors.

With his pants down.

That was his way of hitting on her. Straczynski just put it into the scripts as a recurring gag, because Straczynski himself was a little creepy towards women at that time.

They eventually married, he continued being an alcoholic creep and Thompson has suggested he was, uh, less than gentlemanly towards her, and they split after less than two years together.

We're about to finish S4 and I'm trying to decide if I want to continue to S5.

Cons: Byron. Fucking Byron. Ugh.
Pros: he doesn't last all that long and the rest of the season is depressing ("we fixed the problems! Wheee! No other problems exist anywhere and we definitely shouldn't be paying attention to this stuff") but good.

There's no question that Byron was really, really poorly written, but I still have to wonder if the character would have been received a little more warmly with a different actor. Byron was essentially Robin Atkin Downes' first role ever, and he was terribly inexperienced (and it showed on the screen; half the time, when Byron is supposed to seem poised and assured, he looks more terrified).

Oh, and I forgot, no Ivanova. What a mess that was; both her limited time in S4 and the whole mess around renewal.

For Byron ... I actually really don't like the entire storyline because it's just pants-on-head idiotic. Honestly, the entire arc with Lyta was really hard to deal with; not on her as a character or actress but just how she was treated. Sitting on the couch it's hard to really feel the problem between normals and telepaths (... and I try to be a better person anyway) so the "we're going to treat you like garbage" was just hard to stomach. She had grievances, they were legitimate grievances, and JMS just didn't land it.
