IP Segmenting

This doesn't fit really neatly into any one category, but I figured it tied in with routers, which would fall under other hardware. Anyway...

I am curious about implementing some IP segmentation on my network, by changing around the subnet masks...is there any good resources out on the web for doing this?

Um, there is about an 8 hour class on this in a Cisco IOS course . It's not easy, be sure to brush up on your Binary Math...

But really, it would much easier to simply use one subnet, with multiple networks, and build a simple routing table for your router:

Your subnet: 255.255.255.0
Network 1: 192.168.1.0
Network 2: 192.168.2.0
Network 3: 192.168.3.0
etc...

Funnily enough on the Microsoft NT Server Web site you will find 2 excellent introductory papers to TCP-IP and one of them is called

This has a excellent explanation of Subnet masking.

The best place on this forum for a definitive answer to real networking question (Not, how do I connect a few Windows 98 machines) you best of asking in the NT Forum in future.

To start, pick up Cisco TCP/IP Routing Professional Reference and Internetworking with TCP/IP Vol. I: Principles, Protocols, and Architecture .

Unless you want to be as clueless as the rest of the NT System Admins that I have to deal with at night, do NOT go to a Microsoft site to learn about networking initially.

Learn it right the first time so you know how it is supposed to work. That way you'll be able to recognized NT's broken implementation and work around it.

ok, if you actually want to know anything about TCP/IP, read, reread and then read again the book * TCP/IP Illustrated: Volume 1 * by the late w. richard Stevens.

This is the book that i have heard refered to as "the classic" more times than i can count. It derserves that title. you will learn all you could want about subnetting.

Well those NT Admins have probably not read the NT Server TCP/IP whitepaper I mentioned above.

It is an excellent introduction to TCP/IP, one of the best on the net I have found, and believe me, I have seen a lot of explanations on the internet!
