IP Segmenting

This doesn't fit really neatly into any one category, but I figured it tied in with routers, which would fall under other hardware. Anyway... I am curious about implementing some IP segmentation on my network, by changing around the subnet masks...is there any good resources out on the web for doing this? Thank you!
