Elon Musk blames X outages on “massive cyberattack”

Yes, the article says that, but it's unsupported by an actual quote from Elon. Basic reading comprehension here. He only commented on the IP address, not the people behind it. Is there any actual evidence Elon said Ukrainian persons are behind it, or just more comments from other people, authors or otherwise, inferring more from what he actually said than is warranted?
No, we're not doing this. Musk does not deserve the benefit of the doubt, period. If he said it was a Ukranian IP address, then he absolutely meant to imply that Ukraine was behind it.

There is precisely ZERO reason why anyone, let alone a news outlet, should pretend otherwise. This bullshit is how we got the New York Times taking at face value Trump saying he doesn't want to ban abortion, and that he had nothing to do with Project 2025.

Attribution for nation-state level attacks are notoriously difficult, but yeah you figured out who did it in just a few hours. Those bread crumbs and debug symbols the attacker left behind ensured you blamed the correct country right away. Hackers of this caliber are notorious for leaving evidence behind that points directly back at them instead of misdirection.

Well, that's assuming this was an attack at all. Pretty sure TSLA was getting clobbered in the market during this attack and Leon could've used some sympathy at that moment. Reichstag Fire 2: Electric Boogaloo?

Or the NY Time speculating how invading Canada and taking it over might benefit democrats. It's asinine to even entertain the scenario as it's objectively evil

What I want to know is why so many Democratic Party politicians are still on X. They need to get off of their enemy’s platform when a good alternative exists. This also applies to politicians and political parties in Europe. Stop supporting people who want to cause you harm.
This kind of thing is the reason why people who have shits to give about the country and the world still use the the Fascist's Messaging Service.

If the politicians and authorities like police and community services got the fuck off of Twitter, it would die. Most news services still link stories to their Twitter statements, which drive clicks and enable the cesspool to display ads and shit like that.

People who want to stay engaged in the goings on of their communities still have to use Twitter to get websites and other information posted there by their other community members as well.

Convince THOSE people to switch to Bluesky or some other non-neo-fascist safe haven and Twitter would cease to be a viable site because then all the core advertisers with actual money would leave due to a lack of traffic.

So, write to your representatives and ask them to remove themselves from Twitter and post a new location on Bluesky.

And I mention only ONE alternative social media site as a necessary component to dumping Twitter. A lot of them are out there, but unlike Twitter, none of them have reached critical mass as THE go-to place to look for someone who used to be on Twitter. It answers the question, "If not Twitter, then where?" that a lot of people have.

That's another reason why they don't end their accounts on Twitter, because their sometime followers have no idea where they may go, and might not find them again. As long as Twitter can record a site visit from someone who doesn't even engage, it counts toward their demographics.

For Twitter to die, we need the people who don't engage to stop visiting altogether and to post in those Twitter places they do visit that they're NOT coming back until the person moves to another specific social media site.

Let me guess- Elon got his ‘tip’ that it came from Ukraine- from Russia.

Tension gripped those in the room as the man lurched through the door, kicking cots and sleeping bags from his path. His eyes widened as he tried to focus their watery gaze on one young staffer. "You!" the man barked. "Have you traced the IP addresses yet!"

"Coming in now--"

The man interrupted him. "Where do I know you from?"

"I'm, uh, Big Balls brother."

The man clapped him on the back. "Good man, your brother. Hard core. We'll call you Smaller Balls."

"Um, thank you..."

"Is it what I announced? This attack is from Ukraine?"

"A few of these do seem to be from there--"

The man's jaw clenched beneath the extra chins. "Ah ha!"

"There are several million vectors and only a few of--"

But the man's pudgy thumbs were already racing over his phone's screen.

The lies are just cartoonishly stupid at this point. It was George Soros, it was democrats, it was Ukraine, it was his enemies, it was DEI….blah blah fucking blaaaaaaah.

Anyone who thinks this dipshit is anything other than a very basic dickhead is delusional.
Sadly very many are delusional because they'd rather not confront reality

It would be mentioned because it's a significant clue to tracking down the perpetrators.
... in a Fox Business TV interview? You think someone is going to watch that, hear "Ukraine area," and go "Eureka! I know exactly who it is!"

Others have pointed it out, but IP addresses can be spoofed. There was no reason for Musk to include that bit in his incredibly brief statement about it during a TV interview, except to make the implication that Ukraine and/or its citizens were involved.

Was it coming from the Russian area? The Belarussian area? The Moldovan area? The Romanian area? All of these would be synonyms for "the Ukranian area", but none were used. Specifically "the Ukranian area". Y'know, because of the implication.

If those don't qualify as synonyms, you would say Ukraine. But he's not. He's implying.

He also claims protests at Tesla facilities are organized by his enemies so I'm pressing X to call bullshit

Edit: Oops no it's worse, he blamed it on democratic donors like George Soros
Please don't falsely reduce it to "Democratic donors like George Soros". The simple fact is every time Musk, Trump, or any GOP mentions Soros, it's an antisemitic slur. So he's full-on Nazing with his Soros lies. It really needs to be called out on every GOP person that does this so that we can make it 100% clear to all the half-braindead masses out there that we're careening down the fascist path.

It was clear to people who keep track of the very tired slurs but you’re right we should be careful to point out what they mean when they talk about “(((Democrat donors)))”

Here? No, not really. Out in the real world? A depressingly large number of people, yes.

I was reading this piece on federal workers who have been laid off by DOGE and how their own families are cheering for their job losses because they're so convinced Elon Musk is saving the country from defaulting on our mortgage.

https://apnews.com/article/trump-musk-doge-federal-layoffs-c41ae32800a7f170484de79572543da2

The cognitive dissonance I see is crazy.. My own family (in Canada) is complaining that "Mark Carney is an unelected official", while a couple of days earlier singing Elon's praises about "Finding and eliminating waste", totally not realizing he's exactly the same thing. Just makes me wanna puke.

Or they silently support the demolishing of democracy and await the techno-utopia-theocracy that will definitely be much better. /s

Plenty of those around IMO, they just won't ever admit it until they think it's safe. Now's the time to push back on this shit in every way possible. It won't get easier over time.

Oh, rare good news! Congrats on her victory. I hope she can enforce.
On the plus side, if she can't enforce, she can always force Twitter into bankruptcy - a court ordered payment is very strong grounds for that if the company refuses to pay for any reason.

On the personal level, I hope she gets what she's owed. On the broader scheme of things, watching Twitter forced into bankruptcy over unpaid severance would be very popcorn worthy. Don't get me wrong, I'd rather see people paid what they're owed, but I'd not be unhappy if this is what forces Twitter to fold.

Someone over on Bluesky asked the question "If Trump were working for Putin, what would he be doing differently?" and honestly I'm damned if I know. He's already crashing the US economy faster that an Elon Musk rocket.

Not quite at Liz Truss levels yet though.

[Edit: Fingers and thumbs, not all quite there..]

I'm getting really tired of "Elmo" as a replacement for Elon Musk, because Elmo is a beloved Sesame Street character, and far smarter, kinder, and funnier than Elon Musk. And there's no reason not to say Elon or Musk, or Elon Musk.

I'm getting really tired of "Leon" as a replacement for Elon Musk, because Leon is a beloved movie character playing a hit man, and far smarter, kinder, and funnier than Elon Musk.

It definitely is telling that they don't mention Democratic donors like Mark Cuban, who people actually know and follow, but just constantly go back to the same well of the shadowy Jewish financier they've been referencing my entire adult life.

This twitter guy needs to be shown the door. He is actively working against the interests of the US and against the interests of all democracies worldwide. All of these "empathy is a sin" and "empathy is a weakness" assholes need to go. This is damn near the definition of sociopath. We are doing ourselves a serious disservice by not limiting the influence and impact these creeps have. They are an active, malignant tumor on us all.

It's not just him.

The entire GOP should be convicted on the basis of domestic terrorism at this point, and forcibly disbanded.

Second-class citizenship status for voters registered to the party during certain periods is the only way this can be put to bed, ala a Nuremburg Trials process and Reconstruction 2.0

The Democrats have political and process issues to address and blind spots to rework for sure, but they don't need a bad faith opposition party for the last ideological century to teach them how to do it, and they have a lot of right wing voters that need to go back to a reasonable conservative party so they can actually be left wing.

Those right flank voters that keep showing up are a large part of the reason the Democratic Party gets double-standards applied to its competencies and policy platforms, on top of right wing propaganda economics needing to be shut down under the Karl Popper Paradox concepts applied counter to the First Amendment.

Until some Gaddafi chaos happens, I don't see anything changing before 2032.

I mean, wasn't Leon originally done by Trump? So in that case, by using Leon, you are basically showing that you have the same level of intellect as Trump?

Musk specifically said "IP addresses," plural.
So? IP Address are assigned in contiguous blocks to countries. If such an attack were happening then the IXs serving that country could just drop all outbound traffic heading for Twitter.

The whole point of a DDoS is to make the attack happen from everywhere all at once so that it cannot be blocked by an IX with a simple BGP rule.

If the attack is originating from a group of IPs belonging to Ukraine, then it's not a DDoS AND it's easily block/stop at numerous hops along the way to Twitter.

IP Addresses aren't assigned to countries, but to regions, and the Regional Internet Registry assigns them to ISPs and organizations within that region:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regional_Internet_registry

So there isn't necessarily a contiguous block of IPs for one specific country or area.

Especially now that it turns out Ukraine was not even in the top 20 geolocations the main IPs were from. Sounds like they had unprotected origin servers.

I don't know who started first comparing a country's finances to a household budget, whether it was Thatcher or Reagan, but 40 years later here we still are with the original gaslighting. It's a lie that just won't go away.
