Asus gives the ROX Xbox Ally the OLED screen it deserves

But still no trackpads.

Lame.
For me also, no trackpad makes a handheld like this a non-starter.

I do have the Xreal glasses and use them quite often an love them (though I also use the lens cover so I can just use the screens).

On a side note, with handheld getting into the $1000+ ranges with packages getting near $1300 and over, I have to wonder how many people are actually buying these.

A $300 Steamdeck was a lot more easy to imagine as a sale to the average gamer on the go, but many folks I know wouldn't be able to drop $1k+ (let alone $2k), especially in this disaster that is the economy.

As much as I like from a tech standpoint these behemoth handhelds that almost require either a portable battery or to be played near an outlet (e.g. at home), I do miss actual portable consoles that fit in your pocket. That market has basically disappeared outside of cheap handheld consoles that are basically glorified android emulator machines with terrible ergonomics or questionable QC longevity. It doesn't look like the industry cares about it at all sadly.

At that size they're competing with iPhones. They're not gonna win, unfortunately. I agree with you -- that size/form factor was the best. I'm old enough to have had the original GameBoy. I'm still chasing that portability high.

Asus was founded in 1989.
xbox first plopped out in 2001.

So it's the 20th anniversary of what? And don't say 2006.

They called it "Ally," announced it at the beginning of Pride month, and it's not any color of the rainbow. Abject failure.
Mixing all colours of light results in white.
Mixing all colours of pigment results in black.

Ergo, it may be technically correct to say it contains colours of the rainbow. :eng101:

I wonder if all these handheld manufacturers ever understood why the original ROG Ally and Steam Deck were so enticing? Few people are willing to pay full fat gaming PC/laptop prices for a handheld console. I have a Zotac Zone because at € 400 discounted new, it was a cost-effective way to play my Steam/GOG/Gamepass/PS library on the go.

I've been playing my n3DSXL more lately (once it gets warmer I don't want to fight air conditioning with a PC tower) and have been enjoying it's size. But after digging out my DS and GBA SP, even the 3DSXL feels too large to be a true portable. I agree it's hard to compete with phones but it is a bummer that any of the smaller handhelds really just feel like repurposed phones with a controller layout slapped on.

Have you ever owned a Game Gear?
My GPD Win mini certainly doesn't last less than my GG used to on 6 AA batteries.

I had a rechargeable battery pack for my Game Gear. It was literally the size of a motorcycle battery and lasted about and hour and a half between charges.

The ROG (Republic of Gamers) branding started in 2006.
O_O

I only recently read about it on Ars it feels in the last 3-5 years? I can't believe it's been that long!

The oldest mention I found just now was this article
https://meincmagazine.com/gadgets/202...-windows-eats-battery-and-needs-time-to-cook/
For those of you wondering what the "needs time to cook" part of the headline/URL means, I have no idea.

https://meincmagazine.com/gadgets/202...18gb-of-ram-two-usb-ports-crazy-rear-display/
Two displays! Two USB ports! Two batteries!

Seems to have been a gap...

6000 USD$ laptop!

Sam even explained the meaning of ROG in 2024, which is not something one normally does with 18-year-old brands if anyone's ever heard of them, as you'll note on X.

Those Lucky Goldstars.

It's definitely been around a while, but it eas primarily marketed towards enthusiasts and system builders. If you don't build your own machines, you would never see their products.

Start with the Ars list on GoG and play great games for low prices. Or worst case scenario, start Planescape Torment and you'll never finish before RAM prices fall; I'm over a decade in and hope to finish before I die.
Oh, I am just making a joke about how pricy everything is nowadays. Since I have young kids, I stopped playing because kids are even more expensive and I also don't want them to start playing video games because they see me playing it.

Having PCs aren't portable, and aren't much if any cheaper than a Steam Deck anymore.

And the Zone is no longer available new, from what I know.
