To clarify, you couldn't edit text? I wasn't able to replicate on my end, so if you could add any additional info that'll help us track it down faster!
On Firefox on Android, I edited my post to add a picture, and placed the caret at the end of my existing text. When I typed more, nothing showed up. Up to date Pixel 7 Pro.

Hmm.. I think we'll have to re-import that tracking data. It might be a "tomorrow" thing though.

Perhaps selecting "Automatically watch content you interact with…" will create effectively the same functionality for me (especially if I filter the Threads view by "watched")?

What exactly does "interact" mean? If I like someone's comment on a main page discussion, will that automatically watch that thread, then? Or will it only watch it if I comment? I'm hoping for the latter. 😅

Also, is it me or is the "Show Online Status" privace feature not working? Granted, I can only see myself from my point of view, but I have unchecked both "show online status" and "show current activity", but I still see the status icon on my avatar and my name in the list on the main forums page.

Can someone else please let me know whether or not they can see my online status? Thanks. :)
I checked on my end and I'm not seeing an online status on your account!

I've been an avid reader for a few years now (ever since a then-friend introduced me to this wonderful site). I just registered now to raise an issue I've come across. These days I primarily consume Ars on my mobile phone using Firefox Focus set to block JavaScript. Prior to this upgrade, the comments were visible on front page articles, albeit with reduced functionality. Now, however, it appears that JavaScript is an absolute requirement for the comments to even load.

I have no idea how to interpret the change. Comments have a "comment" and a "date" icon. What do these mean? The poster's age, or how long they've bben on ars or ??? What does the comment icon mean? The number of comments this particular poster has posted? This is like waking up to find my phone was updated overnight, and I have to learn to use it all over again. Not a happy camper. STOP CHANGING THINGS THAT ALREADY WORK WELL! p-p-p-lease.

In the comments for articles, if you click on the upvote/downvote area, it creates a sort of 'popup' page that has who upvotes and downvotes. Problem is, if you click on a comment near the bottom of the page (or anywhere away from the top of the comments page that doesn't happen to have any real reactions yet), all you see is the whole site darken up with no indication on what happened. You need to scroll all the way to the top of the comments section of the article in order to see anything. I think if this is to stick around, it would be better implemented by having the info as a 'mouse-over' feature.

Plus, honestly, not a fan of seeing how individual people vote on comments. I mean, yeah, it'd be funny to point out certain trolls who just go through and downvote every comment in a particular thread, but I can see this as a way for users to openly 'bully' people by making it KNOWN they downvote specific users. It kind of gives them "the power" and potential reaction that they want.
I agree. I would much prefer that the votes/downvotes and likes be completely anonymous. In theory, certain influential users can direct how others vote or like.

The new "Alerts" feature has an option to Alert us in the top bar if someone replied to one of our posts. However, clicking on it sends me to the first post in the thread, rather than either the newest post or the reply it alerts on.

Given that Ars' posting culture encourages long-running threads, that makes the alert rather useless.

I would like this, but that would make things awkward. :p

+1 on "likes" on forum threads not being something I really want to see. At best, they're distracting.

EDIT: LOL stop liking this, people. :p

EDIT 2: Hmm... The likes remain, even after I edit the post. 🤔

"We’ve also created a new, fresh look for the site that should help you to get around and find content more easily by developing a new display for forum content."

I don't know if it does any of that. I do know the change is not useful for me, personally, since I now have to re-learn how to use the site. So the changes are a big time-sync. (And some changes are NOT intuitive in the least)

Hello! I've subscribed for a while, and really value Ars Technica, although I never post and don't usually actually log in to read articles. Two comments on the new comments: (1) Since I usually browse with Javascript off (and enjoy a version of the web that is so fast and responsive), I appreciate the fact that your comment system seems to work without Javascript on my phone. I've always appreciated that the mobile version functions without Javascript, even if the desktop page requires it to read comments. (2) I'm sad that the default is now light, not dark, on the mobile version, and I'm sure without Javascript on, I'll never be able to change that.

Finally, I appreciate that this might be one place where I won't necessarily be laughed out of the room for suggesting that someone might like to use the internet without Javascript.

JavaScript is a requirement for the time being to load in comments. Sorry about that!

Okay, I have a question. The old version had a "My Threads" page of threads that I've posted in (and so conversations that I'd like to keep track of). I'm having trouble finding the equivalent here. Is there one?

Or do I have to go and set all the threads I'm participating in to "Watched" in order to be able to easily filter that in the "Threads" view to get a near equivalent?
Forums menu at the top > Find Threads > Threads with your posts

I just learned that simply clicking on the thread title takes you to the newest unread post in that thread.

Hey there! Did you have your account hooked up with a connected account like Facebook or Google? This should be the only case where you'd need to reset your password
I similarly had to reset, and it was only tied to AFAIK, and reset by, my email address. I was able to re-use my "old" password without it complaining, so perhaps the user DB didn't quite migrate (or finish) as seemlessly as intended? The email-based reset worked 99% and I'm in as well now. The missing 1% is I had to prove I'm not a robot by testing my pancake identification skills, and now I'm hungry.

Testing, testing...

Okay, so far so good - response is good on my aging 1st gen iPad air which struggles with Quora, Twitter, and Facebook.

Playing with fonts - annoying behavior #1, after selecting the font the cursor goes back to the beginning of the post.

Now playing with a different font and color, and that time the cursor didn't pop back to the top. Curious.

BIG. Bold. small.

There's no visible indication whether the bold or italic buttons are active.

We'll see if the bbcode renders properly.

Hmp - when you go back to edit the bbcode elements, they're not visible - you see the formatted text. That's mildly annoying.

It always bugs me when I take the time to try to compose a well written response to something only for someone else to go ahead and write it much better than I could. (This may also be why I hadn't created an account yet here.)

From the threads with your posts page that is the fastest way to get to latest content. This may be a bit faster, but if you go the the threads feed and use the watched content filter you'll see all of your watched threads and from there you'll be taken to the latest unread content in each thread. Hope that helps!
I r dum dum.

Turns out simply clicking on the thread title on the "Threads with your posts" will take you to the latest unread post. I just didn't notice it because the 2 threads I opened up only had the 1 page.

(My) User Acceptance Testing fail!

UPDATE: Turns out that this "latest unread post" feature only works if you have unread posts in the thread. If you've already read that thread, then the "jump to latest unread post" linkage doesn't work. Curious!
