That trade deficit is going to look real bad when American autos are literally illegal to drive everywhere else in the world
Thanks to things like the chicken tax, US domestic car production has mostly been for US domestic consumption for decades. The rest of the world doesn't really buy a lot of US-made vehicles, although you will see them in places like the Middle East and South Korea.

I'm guessing they'd suggest cheaper cars? If you can knock some emissions control equipment off the bill of materials you might save a fraction of the cost of the orange one's tariffs.

My neighbor who has removed every single piece of emissions control equipment from his 3/4 ton diesel commuter and idles it for an hour on the street in front of our house in the winter to "warm it up" is probably gonna love this. My family's lungs? Not so much. But who gives a shit about our health if his truck gets 5% more power, amirit?

Europe is full of Fords tho. Are you specifically referring to production, that is, vehicles that are physically manufactured in the US? Maybe I'm conflating "production" with "brands".

If there are no longer fines for pollution, would automakers still have to install DEF systems in diesel engines? As far as I know, there is no actual requirement to have the system. In fact, that was the whole origin of the VW dieselgate scandal: VW claimed to be able to meet emissions without a DEF system. Of course, they were instead cheating the test. So far either VW or anybody else has built a diesel that meets emission requirements without DEF. But if there are no longer any fines for not meeting emissions, why would an automaker bother with a system that adds cost and complexity to the diesel engine?

Ford -although an American brand- has a line up of vehicles for Europe that you largely won't see in the States, and vice versa. They're also made in Europe, not in the States, I believe (but could be wrong).

I think most automakers want stability in laws and regulations. Having them change every other month has got to be infuriating for the bean counters.
Which is why they will quietly stay the course. The R&D money was already sunk, the products are already in production.

They know they’re voting for evil but they don’t give a shit. We need to stop pretending that it matters if republicans contradict themselves or if they have no beliefs in anything but the almighty dollar and spewing hatred.

I wish we could get the list of the car executives asking for this, if any. Then remember not to buy their cars. Melon Mush is evil, and people boycott his companies, but these actions are equally, if not more, evil and these executives deserve the same level of boycott and public outing. Does anyone know who they are?

Get ready for less-efficient and more-polluting vehicles in the US.
I'm not sure about this. What we're seeing is a dismantling of the regulatory structure. Because automotive companies generally plan out on a 10-20 year trajectory and any intelligent person can foresee that the current administration is an anomaly, I foresee manufacturers by and large continuing to aim for CAFE targets, even with the (temporary) removal of the stick. Because not doing this could be even more costly to them in the long-run.

However, what I also expect is that this will result in a lack of IMPROVEMENT in efficiency and pollution prevention over the next four years. Because manufacturers, currently suffering under tariffs, will be able to offload all their current technology without having to invest as much in their improved tech. And in five or so years when regulatory bodies potentially swing back the other direction, they'll be able to plead for extensions because the previous administration very obviously was directing them somewhere else, plus they were suffering from the tariffs.

Im sure regulations can be annoying to auto manufacturers but is this something even they want?
Considering the cost of retooling, walking it all back and teh added issue of less available income for the average consumer and higher prices for the new cars to pay for all that retooling and redesign?

Trump knows jack shit about anything except being an egregious fuckwad - at which he admittedly excels.

No one asked for this except the oil industry. The US auto industry would be committing suicide to do it.

Not to mention the biggest impacted areas are going to be red states. Thankfully for the GOP, their base will give up battery manufacturing, jobs, EV plants willingly to own the Libs.

Another self-destructive policy. When the president complains about China eating the US's lunch and then does another move that helps strengthen China's position. The Chinese EV automakers are booming and the US is going to be further left n the dust, especially with its unwillingness to invest in future technologies.

When the US points at Europe as being the old-continent, but then enacts measures that make it look like the older continent, is disheartening.

Don't bother with logical question - this was done with a combination of oil money and feels.

Feels means that if its important to the left, they should oppose it, because in their world everything they believe in is 100% correct and everything the left does is 100% wrong and there is NEVER any overlap. Because overlap would mean that they are somehow like or can relate to left, which they cannot abide. Or that the left may be even a little bit correct. That can't happen either.

They have put themselves in a box with purity tests and zero compromise. We end up with borderline insane government policy, twisted and warped by their own box.

I highly recommend snitching to every authority from local PD to the state to the EPA. Maybe nobody does anything, but removing the cat can actually result in big fines.

I recently saw someone advocating that the most important thing for the climate is to keep EVs and clean energy depoliticized.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work that way, the GOP is dead set on politicizing this. If you're in the same room with somebody and they are determined to start a physical altercation, wishing really hard to not have a physical altercation doesn't stop it from happening. It only takes one side to start the fight, no matter how the other person wants to not fight.

Smart automakers will act as if the CAFE regulations are still in force, because they know the pendulum will swing back. Plus, many of these designs are sold in more places than just the U.S....and a lot of efficiency is lost by making dissimilar models.

That and most consumers want better gas mileage and less pollution.
