I see a few potential problems with the new Xbox "backwards compatibility" program as it's currently reported...
1.) What keeps me from lending out my huge library of 360 games to my friends to install copies on their Xbox Ones? Maybe a disc-in-drive requirement could take care of that.
2.) How will developers be compensated for their 360 games if no additional payment is required from the player? Will Microsoft eat the cost of a license to satisfy devs in the hope that it'll grow the player base?
3.) What about developers who'd like to make revamped (e.g. "HD Remaster") ports of their older games for the latest console? This program would likely cut into their potential sales and thereby reduce the likelihood that they'd be willing to move forward with a project they'd otherwise like to do.

Let me translate:
1.) I enjoy the publisher considering me a thief by default.
2.) I enjoy paying for the same product several times.
3.) See 2) above, although a proper "HD remake" may be worth some money. Not full game price though, sorry.

While you sound like the ideal customer from the publisher's point of view, most of us would rather pay for the same content only ONCE.

You're looking at it from a pretty ignorant and severely "egocentric consumer" point of view.

It's my wallet, isn't it? I prefer using that wallet to fund new games on kickstarter rather than buying "HD remakes".

Besides, we live in the age of paid for horse armor or being denied content if you don't preorder the game without waiting for the reviews (Aliens: Isolation; Batman: Arkham Whatever XXXIII). Explain to me why I should have any compassion for those publishers?

Edit: don't forget always online requirements for single player (Blizzard, Rockstar...).

richten[/url]":2jbblogr]For me backwards compatibility is worth it for early adopters, when the console has very few games. But 2 years in, there should be enough games for the new console that you shouldn't need it.
Is the selection on current-gen so poor that people need backwards compatibility to justify buying the new consoles?

If there are games you liked on the previous generation hardware, and/or there is still meaningful development for the system, you might still want to play those games. You can quickly develop space limitations (my TV has only 2 HDMI inputs, my power strip has only 7 outlets, by entertainment system has only 4 shelves, etc. If you are also cross-platform (got 2 or even three of the leading consoles) and have to keep the older generation hardware hooked up, as well... Backward compatibility helps.

Maybe the OP selects the games he plays based on the hardware in fashion that week, instead of choosing the hardware based on what games he wants to play. But for people who play what they like instead of what is current, backwards compatibility helps a lot.
