Trump admin pulls funding for drive-through COVID-19 testing

It is shockingly obvious that our response to this infection has been closer to that of North Korea then South Korea.

Our for-explotation healthcare system has proven to be ineffective at actually protecting both the patients and healthcare staff. I can tell you that healthcare workers are not upset, they are ANGRY with the current administration and the management of their respective organizations.

The sad thing is there is a large percentage of Americans at this point that essentially live in an uncaring fantasy world, where the fate of their neighbors and family is less important then the political sports game they live in.

"On Wednesday, HHS announced that licensed pharmacists will now be able to perform COVID-19 testing to help fill the gap."

Just another example of Trump admin farming out duties to the private sector (for a high fee of course).

There is little doubt, by the end the US will have the highest death-toll and endure the highest economic damage from this global pandemic.

Testing is getting in the way of reopening the economy again. Nothing can be allowed to interfere with making money. A few thousand more deaths? Meh, it's good for the manufacturers of body bags, right?

Elections have consequences. Vote for a narcissistic, sociopathic conman and pathological liar, this is what you should expect.

Tbf a lot of countries have stopped universal testing due to lack of reagents. Here in Ireland you need to be in an at-risk group and display 2 or more major symptoms, or else need to be a frontline healthcare worker.

This was done after it became obvious that the virus was in the community - once nationwide quarantine measures were put in place the value of universal testing was lower.
With all due respect, I am not making a connection between stopping universal testing due to lack of reagents and diminishing returns, and the Federal government withdrawing funding for testing.

"The spokesperson framed the withdrawal of funding as allowing states to dictate their own priorities, telling NPR, 'The transition will ensure each state has the flexibility and autonomy to manage and operate testing sites within the needs of their specific community and to prioritize resources where they are needed the most.'"

What remains unclear is why the federal funding for these drive-through tests inhibited states' flexibility and autonomy. Was it like, "You get funding for drive-through testing, but you have to give up your autonomy."?

I can't help but wonder if these tests are generating data that's somehow making Trump look bad.

And we still have Bernie Bros who will vote for this idiot (or at least, not vote for Biden) because their guy didn't win.
The good news is that there likely won't be anyone making the mistake of assuming Biden will win and using that as an excuse to stay home like I imagine many Hillary voters did.

The bad news is that since Republicans as a group are taking the virus less seriously, they will be less dissuaded from voting by potential sickness if it's still widespread in November.

Really bad news: the virus gives Trump et al lots of reasons to restrict voting in urban centers, while leaving it unrestricted in rural areas, which could create a huge swing. See what Milwaukee turnout was like in Wisconsin this week...

As an outsider, I just don't understand what the USA as a country is doing.

As an American, I don't understand it either. The only thing that makes any kind of sense anymore is that Trump is actively trying to screw the country up. Things would be better if he were merely negligent instead of acting in a malicious manner and putting a lot of effort into making a mess of things.

As an insider, neither do I.

Edit: wow, beaten to the punch several times over! that'll teach me to refresh before I comment.
Trolls would call this an echo chamber.

I call it great minds thinking alike.

The GOP healthcare plan, as imagined by their party leaders and voting base:

Instead of getting outraged online, pick up the phone and call your congress rep. Ask them why funding is being cut off to this vital program.

Remember, the President doesn't set funding. Neither do any of the myriad number of bureaus. Congress sets funding. If the administration attempts to invoke administrative discretion on this issue, Congress can overrule them by mandating the spending.

Congress won't do anything however if people just type in social forums.
