Trump’s swift demolition of East Wing may have launched asbestos plumes

Federal law requires...

well, that never stopped Trump.

As for asbestos being safe: yeah, if you never maintain the building, nor tear it down, but also don't let it fall down, then asbestos is safe. "Safe until disturbed" means it's not safe, because buildings get disturbed.

In a letter to the president last week, Reinstein wrote, “Federal law requires comprehensive asbestos inspection, notification, and abatement before any demolition. As of this date, no publicly available information demonstrates that these statutory obligations have been fulfilled.”
This seems to be a recurring trend. Trump's foes scream about pieces of paper while Trump's friends drive bulldozers through the White House.

On the other hand, I wonder how much airborne dust and particles might have made their way into the White House and its ventilation systems? What's good for the goose...
I wonder whether there's yet again a strict "no masks" policy at the White House.

My fears for this administration were blown off as alarmist by so many.

Never did I imagine they would just... tear down 1/3 of the White House without notice.
Never did I imagine... they would try to roll back asbestos regulations, as they attempted in the spring.

Even with all that.... "Asbestos-laden dust and debris from the White House demolition was dumped in a local park" ... and this is not hair on fire news! ... hit me with a new level of incredulity.

There is no confirmation that the Trump admin. followed abatement processes.

That makes it sound like there it's probable that they followed the law and we are just awaiting confirmation. A more accurate statement would be "it's clear that the Trump admin. did not follow either proper abatement processes nor the law"

The speedy demolition of the East Wing of the White House last week has health advocates and Democratic lawmakers seeking answers about what efforts were taken, if any, to keep workers and passersby safe from potential plumes of asbestos that could arise from the destruction, according to a report by The Washington Post.
A two-pronged approach was implemented. They thought about it and prayed nothing would happen.

That's not enough! We demand MORE asbestos!

"More asbestos! More asbestos!"
YES! Asbestos is fiber for your lungs. Make America Healthy Again by letting the entire trump administration inhale asbestos every day, please. Not /s, I genuinely hope every one of these MAGA ghouls has to chew the air inside the White House because it’s so full of cancer fuel.

Not just toxics - there was no EA, so they're not compliant with NEPA at all, so there was no assessment of alternatives or any potential impacts related to noise, air quality, stormwater management, social/economic effects, soils and geology, they're not disposing of the asbestos-contaminated waste properly, blah blah blah.

The WH is exempt from Section 106 requirements, so they didn't conduct consultation for adverse effects to a NRHP-listed property, but it's still subject to the National Capitol Planning Act of 1952, and they're not compliant with that either. And the footprint of the new ballroom hasn't been assessed for potential impacts to other listed historic resources like the viewshed and design/layout of the national mall or other character-defining features of historic properties, buried subsurface archaeology, whatever.

Yes, they are always in such a hurry to bulldoze every bit of our history, traditions, and the constitution. I’m sure they hired a bunch of illegal-immigrant day laborers to knock it all down and then deported them so they couldn’t tell. They’ve been firing anyone in a position to tell them “no” or even keep records of the very real ongoing national nightmare.

A few days ago Scott Bessent was on the airwaves saying they might have had to remove the building due to asbestos or mold. Which, sadly, did not lead to the talking head interviewing him immediately screaming "YOU DON"T JUST KNOCK THAT SHIT DOWN WITH A BACKHOE IN THREE DAYS YOU FUCKING NUMPTY."

And not to put too fine a point on it, they disturbed the fuck out of the East Wing.

But yes; if it is fully encapsulated, non-friable, not damaged, and not exposed to the open air, sure, asbestos is a contained risk.
