Watching "James May: Our Man in Italy" on Amazon Prime.

Like his Japan series, it's a travelogue exploring a country over a series of episodes.

There's some interesting bits (like when he goes to a giant mountain of marble where the best Italian marble is harvested) and bits not quite as good (a tripe sandwich bit stolen from Bizarre Foods) but it's decent overall.

I managed to binge the entire eighth season of Alone yesterday between chores and fun stuff. It’s good, and bonus points for being able to fast forward through the fill of needless ‘character development’ which is so empty to begin with that the length off the episodes crops them into bite sized chewables. Always interesting seeing people starve themselves for a chance at a few bucks and ironically seems like nobody is aware that the Fed will take 33% of the pot should their wilderness disorder prove fruitful. Fun show. Lots of bear encounters this season.

The Princess. On Hulu

You can tell it's just setting itself up to be made into a video game (princess escapes tower).

But damn, if there aren't some great fight scenes, a bit of humor here and there, and most importantly:

It not only passes the Bechdel test...it laps it, comes around and laps it again, comes around again, applies the PIT maneuver, slams it into the wall and causes it to burst into flames. (with the mild exception of one final scene which could have been handled a bit better)

A fun romp. Lots of violence. Enough backstory without being cloying. Some good big bads..even including lots of "boss" characters on the way to the final boss(es?).

Finished a rewatch of justice league unlimited. I'd forgotten how just great that show was. You can kind of see the budget straining against the animation in quite a few episodes but the voice acting and stories more than make up for it.

Also finished up season 3 of solar opposites. I've finally warmed up to this one. It's got all the wacky sci-fi of Rick and Morty but without all the too smart for you, nothing matters, depression bullshit.

Finished “This is going to hurt” on AMC+
Going to highly recommend this one again.

Probably one of the best new series I’ve seen in a while.
Weighty dramedy, set in an underfunded NHS hospital with a cast of previously unknown (to me) actors.
Only six episode-long season. Edit: I thought the entire season aired. Apparently, there's more.
May involve lots of feels.

Hoping for an S2.
I just finished this and it was SOOO good!! I cannot recommend it enough. It reminded me of the saddest/heaviest episodes of Scrubs--which were some of my favorites.

The new Resident Evil on Netflix is flat out, 100% terrible. I made it through 3 episodes(wanted to give up after 2) but I couldn't make it anymore.

I have yet to hear anyone that likes this.

https://www.gamespot.com/reviews/netfli ... 0-6417913/

IGN also gave it a high-ish rating.

I gave it a chance(not because I trust Gamespot or IGN, which I don't) because I'm a huge fan of the franchise. But this was just bad. And not bad like grab a bowl of popcorn and shut your brain off but flat out terrible. Like, I can't stress enough how bad this is.

The South Park "Streaming Wars" 2 parter on Paramount+ left me agape more than a couple times.

Memorably, while I knew of the existence of a song called W.A.P. I'd never actually heard it. In part one they feature the song and I had the disturbing fortune to be watching with the captions on. Jebus, my parents thought Alice Cooper was the end of civilization. LOL.

Yeah, it was pretty great. I was fucking gut-punched. (And I liked it.)

It's probably worth mentioning that the lead, "previously-unknown-to-me-actor", Ben Wishaw, is often considered one of the best of his generation so...1.

That's not good to hear. I like the franchise enough that every few months, I'll grab a case of beer and binge the whole series of movies. I guess I'll skip this. :/

I wouldn't really trust a Gamespot Review. They literally fired a reviewer for giving a game a bad review because the website was selling adverts for the game and the game dev complained about the review.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2 ... 5176684f25

To briefly summarize, long, long ago in a galaxy far away (called simply The Year of Our Lord 2007) a writer at GameSpot, Jeff Gerstmann, was fired. This came closely on the heels of his negative review of Kane & Lynch. Rumors that the publisher had applied pressure on GameSpot to get rid of Gerstmann ran rampant, and, it turns out, were all (mostly) true.

Just to explain why they might have *loved* an obviously terrible series.

Yeah, so many places used to be good, I don't even bother with game reviews for the most part. I don't really know who to trust. At least Steam gives me 2 hours to try.

I always liked Gamespot more than IGN but even know if they like something I just assume its bad.

IGN gave it a 7/10, which on their scale is absolute garbage fire.

In a slight change of tone from the Resident Evil discussion, I can give a hearty recommendation to The Sea Beast on Netflix if you are open to good natured wholesome fun. It's not necessarily innovative or fresh like a Mitchell Vs. The Machines but the animation quality is A++ and while the story beats won't surprise, I quite enjoyed it.

Having a quiet day for once, I watched 2 movies this morning while I organized all the laundry and what not. High Fidelity and SLC Punk, both on HBO Max.

SLC Punk is as good as I remember and High Fidelity is probably better than I remember. I don't think I've seen either in 15 years at least.

My favorite part of SLC Punk.

I'll second this. A bit of "how to train your dragon" crossed with "monster hunter".

Also watched "Blasted" which was featured on the front page a while back. A lower budget "the world's end" without the pathos or social commentary. Rates as "delightfully adequate", the perfect movie to fall asleep on the couch to on some lazy Saturday afternoon.

‘Extraordinary attorney Woo’, Korean show, on Netflix.
Woo is ‘on the spectrum’, brilliant, obsessed with whales, learning how to get long with people. The actress playing Woo is well, extraordinary.
Good hearted, fish-out-of-water show which doesn’t go where you might anticipate with good actors & excellent production.
Currently 9.2 on IMDB, 100% rotten tomatoes.

++ on the awfulness of Resident Evil on Netflix.

We are working through Z nation....so this sounds promising as a follow up!

Watched Pesuasion on Netflix (was on the missus's list) and regardless of reviews panning it, we quite liked it. Reviewers of relatively mainstream stuff normally don't know shit imho.

Based on your praise, I just started this and watched E1.

Wow. It really is excellent production. So polished. She's captivating. This show, so far, anyway, is really well done.

I recognize several of the players, too. The Squid Game and The Train to Busan.

I made it through 3 episode of Resident Evil. The only thing that got me to the third episode was the song Bodies by the Sex Pistols in the second episode. The third episode just made me wonder why I was watching this crap. I've never been so happy to see credits roll.
I actually feel aversion to the idea of watching a moment more of it.
Impressive.
Most impressive.

I've been powering my way through The Americans, after a brief pause. Great show and some nostalgia for me as I was finishing high school during the time period of the show (early-mid 80s). It leaves Amazon at the end of July, have half of S5 and all of S6 (10 eps) to go.

Great, great show, and one of the few that absolutely, positively stuck the landing on the finale. Probably one of the greatest finales ever.

Oh damn that's leaving? I'm only halfway through the series.
