They did hit "both sides" a bit. Remember "girls get it done"? Though that came from the mouth of a Nazi POS. The writers might have been playing higher level chess than I was aware of at the time.
I was in a discussion with some people in a pinball forum about the show, and that hobby is unfortunately full of magats. I was very amused when they started to complain about how the show went 'woke' after season 2.
Did they actually think Homelander was the hero? Because I've heard of that happening, but I'm not sure how anyone could, given the structure of the show.
As much as I can't recommend the comic, the VP (and later POTUS) that comics Voight installs as their sock puppet in the WH is shockingly similar to Trump in terms of intellectual capacity. If anything, if the comic were to come out today I would call it overtly on-the-nose and unsubtle, but it came out years before the man entered politics so instead it just feels weirdly prophetic.
You think a comic by Garth Ennis is unsubtle? Imagine my surprise!
People like to think no-one saw Trump coming, but there's a lot of works that reference a potential Trump, or Trump-alike, presidency long before 2015.
