White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has confirmed that President Donald Trump is actively working with the FBI to probe the conspiracy theory by “holistically” reviewing “all the cases together” to “identify any potential commonalities that may exist,” CNN reported.
Not to worry! Detective Dr Jesus is on the case!

Sigh. Must be an extremely slow news day (I don't mean this article on Ars but all those media reports on this that Ars is reporting on.)

I ran into this somewhere this morning. An actual non-sensationalist report in The Atlantic. Apparently none of these "missing" people had any real connection to each other. And not all are 'scientists'

E.g. The "antigravity researcher" mentioned above is actually the daughter of a former NASA engineer who claimed to have discovered the secret of antigravity. She also had a friend who was a time traveling soldier named Dan. And she was in hiding from someone trying to prevent the release of her father's discovery. Oh my! :flail:

Probably a nothingburger. The FBI should be keeping tabs on it as a matter of course, that's kind-of their job, but the tempest-in-teapot crowd rarely produce more signal than noise.
Have any reputable sources reported anything about this?
As far as I know, neither the National Enquirer nor the Colbert Report have reported on this. Whether that is sarcasm or an indictment of the popular press is left to the reader.

That's a very selective way of phrasing it. Do you want the full list of groups that doubt it? It might be quicker just to say "All of society other than the terminally-online, sub-normal IQ paranoid right".
On the flipside of that coin, I have heard people murmuring about this in the halls of the computing facilities at LANL. As a general rule they don't fit the category you mentioned.

Generally if there was a real concern that a foreign adversary is coercing and/or kidnapping US persons, especially ones who do sensitive or secret work, the law enforcement efforts to address that threat would be doing everything possible to stay OUT of the news. The fact they're making a congressional circus out of it suggests something else is actually going on here.

The following is speculation: what if the administration is conjuring up a link between a bunch of unrelated cases with a view towards using these mysterious disapperances as a pretense to seize emergency powers in an election year?

I have been seeing this pop up on multiple sources over the past several weeks. Not all are in the realm of fully reliable. Many of these folks are wealthy enough to have adult hobbies that carry a non zero chance of death. Motorcycle riding. Hiking in wilderness areas. Scuba diving. All can result in unexplained death or going missing. If you have a large enough population, the chances of having a group of mysterious events becomes fairly high.

But still probably worth checking to make sure there isn't a common factor. The old saying of once is weird, twice is coincidence but three times is evidence of enemy action might apply here. And if you are a Leroy Gibbs type, you don't believe in coincidence.

I kind of feel like this article doesn't go hard enough on explaining that the claims are complete bullshit and gives way too much space to laying out the claims as though they have some sort of truth to them? The claims about the named persons being involved in national security is a lie, the claims about the timeline has evolved multiple times, and flat out been lied about (claiming it's happened from several months to a year when the named persons are across multiple years) and the claims that there is any connection between the named persons is also a lie.

So the story is a complete fabrication.

How about a quick litmus test: pivot the conversation towards how redirecting FBI and DHS resources to hunting immigrants rendered these organizations blind and helpless against foreign adversaries (e.g. allowing Russia to get away for years with inflicting Havana Syndrome on US diplomats), and watch this story disappear from the news cycle in a puff of smoke.
