I could never get comfortable with the silicone tips and the 3rd gen AirPods are uncomfortable and slide out of my ears. Original AirPods fit great. Any suggestions for 3rd party tips?

I actually just recommended them in a reply to another user here, but you may want to give Comply foam tips a try. (complyfoam.com)

Niche question for a niche use case. Can you use one earpod at a time and does this give twice the battery life?

Yes. I am in meetings all day every day on zoom, and this is how I often have to make it through the day (one airpod in, one airpod charging). We call it "the airpod shuffle".

A new adaptive transparency mode can also offer more dynamic tuning to drown out louder things like vehicles or concerts

Does the transparency mode work while on phone calls? because otherwise, it seems to be pretty weird to be wearing AirPods at a concert .

A lot of folks wear foam ear plugs at concerts because bands like to turn it up to 11 for some reason. I’ve put mine in while using power tools at home and was pleasantly surprised how effective it was so I can imagine transparency mode with a limit on how much volume is reproduced would be nice. The sound in arenas isn’t great anyway.

Understandably Apple will not do this, but more colors would be really nice and appreciated. Why not black/midnight, Product Red, a blue one and a rose or else. They are iconic white Apple brand-shouters, but damn colors would be nice...

Agreed. I'd go for these if they would release another color option, maybe black or gray. I just don't really like the bright white look.

Case covers are not a solution. I don't care about the color of the case, just the parts that go in my ears.
Never thought I’d ever want to have anything to do with anything any Kardashian had anything to do with, but…

I love the idea of skin tone earbuds, but unfortunately I’ve kind of ruled out Beats Pro for durability reasons. I’ll probably just end up with these, bright whiteness notwithstanding.

I recently got hearing aids and was really, really hard pressed not to get the in-ear, skin tone ones. They're so much nicer to look at.

That they cost more and were worse in pretty much every way made me avoid them though.

Reading about all the various tech in these new airpod pros it sounds like they could easily replace my hearing aids if they could talk to each other (I have single side deafness, so they pump sound from one side to the other). Being able to pick voices in various environments is the most expensive part of hearing aids, having ones that do it well drives up the cost by thousands of dollars.

In Accessibility under Audio/Visual in iOS you will find an option to output mono audio, FYI.

Kinda missing the ear bud design instead of the in-ear design. No matter the brand, in-ear headphones always feel strange in my ear canal and easily slide out. I know I'm in the minority since I rarely see others noting the same slide out issue.

And yes, I clean my ears regularly thank you.
I have the same issue. My AirPods Pro fall out of my ears more than the original AirPods ever did. I still love them, though. The active noise cancellation is a wonderful feature. I also clean my ears regularly, but I doubt that’s the problem.

Cheers, yeah, I use that a lot (back in the day, prior to accessibility features in OS's, I used to rip open the 3.5mm jack and solder it together, it's so much nicer).

If it works sending audio from one side to the other with features like Conversation Boost and Adaptive Transparency that is absolutely massive though. And, in theory, it seems a simple addition.

edit: I reached out to Apple, it actually does work to use Transparency mode with mono (or Audio Balance, as they say). They also gave me some other advice for using a single earbud with noise cancellation along with using my phone as a microphone. Seems like they really thought about accessibility!

I was sorta hoping the rumors about lossless transmission would come true but I guess you'd probably not be able to hear a difference in a package this small. And most people can't hear a difference with lossless anyway, not matter what the equipment.

Lossless audio without a treated listening environment is useless. The noise floor is obscured by ambient noise bleeding in. That said, the active noise cancellation and 48 khz sampling frequency is a bigger deal than can be appreciated at first glance because it reduces the perception of ambient noise. Granted it's not perfect but, using a utilitarian framework, it significantly enhances the perception of audio quality for the broadest base of listeners; agnostic to environment. I have owned a lot of headphones, DACs, studio monitors, and other assorted HIFI (just light my wallet on fire already). The early 2000's showed, without a doubt, that access and ease of use trump sound quality for the vast majority of listeners. Spatial audio is another feature trying to justify itself in terms of listening experience. It remains to be seen whether it will be broadly adopted. I for one hope to hear more binaural recordings. If you can listen to Resynthesis (3D Binaural Audio) by Max Cooper it's a game changer. Cheers.

I bought these Proof Labs ear hooks to solve that problem. They come in a pack of three and work really well.

The only downsides are that you have to take them off to charge and it’s yet another thing to carry around. I bought a pill holder key-ring and stick a pair into there.

Not the most elegant of solutions I admit. Hopefully the second generation AirPods are better at staying in your ears.

Still Lightning instead of USB-C? Boo, hiss.

I got downvoted to hell last time I posted about that, but it's a hill I'm willing to die on, dammit!!

I’ll be dying on that hill with you I guess. My primary home computing device is an iPad (USB-C), which is also my only Apple device. Lightning makes zero sense for someone like me.

The biggest update to me was the capacitive sensor to determine you're sliding you finger. So you can now finally adjust volume from your ear.

I just got a Watch this summer for the first time and I use my AirPods with it when I go on bike rides. I really hate trying to adjust the volume with the crown. I wondered why they did not have the sliding gesture to adjust volume. To me it is a no brainer. I guess jamming all the circuitry into such a small space took some time to do.

Since my current AirPods are showing signs of aging batteries, I will be getting these new ones for sure.

Hopefully Apple allows disabling the crown volume control now that volume can be adjusted from earbuds. The crown sometimes rubs against my wrist or shirt when I exercise or do yard work and the volume will adjust to either 0 or 100 without me touching the crown. I can twist the crown to reset the volume, but sometimes it snaps back to maximum repeatedly. The only workarounds are wearing the watch backwards so the crown is on the other side or setting the watch to not bring the music app to the foreground automatically.

I know this doesn't address your ear canal discomfort or strange feeling, but to prevent them from falling out, you may want to take a look at Comply foam tips. (complyfoam.com) I have heard great things about them from friends who usually have trouble getting their earbuds to stay put with the included tips. They have tips for a ton of different headphones from numerous manufacturers, including the original iPod headphones and EarPods.

Comply tips worked pretty well for me. Except that they don't fit well in the charger and they don't last very long - the foam permanently distorts after a while. Comply is happy to sell you a subscription for them ....

I have 3 sets of ear buds - Second generation Apple, 4th Gen Sony and a pair of Bose Quiet Comfort (in search of the Holy Grail). The Bose win hands down for fit (of course YMMV), noise rejection, sound quality and general behavior. The only thing lacking is on ear volume control. Their major flaw was a tendency for the left bud to just quit working. You had to unpair and re pair often daily. I complained to Bose and they sent me an entirely new pair that look identical but don't misbehave.

The Sony WF-1000 XM4 have better noise rejection than the Apple and fit OK but I find them rather finicky - touch the ear and it wants to switch to a different mode or do something else.

The AirPods are at the bottom of the heap. Poor fit, minimal noise control, tinny and, most impressively, works poorly with my iPhone. Often takes minutes to connect. Apple has decided that you need to have 20 year old vision in order to see the tiny, low contrast L or R markings on the buds. Typically annoying Apple.

While the ability to change volume is a nice touch, I'm really underwhelmed with Air Pods so far. And this is from someone with a bunch of various Macs running around and two iPhones in the house.

I've had nothing but luck having my AirPods switch from phone to iPad almost too well. As long as I don't pair my 'pods with a non-Apple device I don't seem to have any trouble with that.

I was honestly unaware that the buds themselves were marked 'L' and 'R' because there's no chance anyone would describe my eyesight as that of a 20 year-old's. However, they only go in their charging case one way and when you open said case, the left bud is on the left.

While amusing, not sure what could really be done about it, especially if you have a front-loader.

I forgot and left the keychain door opener in my pocket after mowing the lawn and it was making the garage door go up and down randomly while the wash cycle ran...and I could stop or start the cycle even power cycle the washer but as near as I can tell front-loaders have no way to force-release the lock mid cycle.

I suppose if you're lucky enough to be somewhere that still has a top load washer it would help.

You can pull my top-loading Kenmore 90 Series out of my cold, agitating hands.
They were such wonderful machines. Sadly the place we live now has a front-loader only. Stupid HE machines also take an eternity to run...like an hour or two vs 20-30 minutes for a regular permanent-press cycle, not ideal if you have multiple people who all need to do laundry after work.

I’m not going to die on either side of that hill. Lightning neither improves, nor negatively impacts my life in any way. If Apple switches to USB-C… I’ll have to buy a few additional cables for the vehicles. My travel kit already accommodates both thanks to multi-tip cables for devices. $50ish later…Life will go on.

Thank you, mrsilver. I just ordered those ear hooks, look forward to trying them out. I’m reasonably sure the new Pros are the same shape as the gen one version.

I own little rubber tips that fit on the AirPods Pro. $14 on Amazon. I use them for workouts because my right one will pop out immediately without them during even the slightest amount of activity. With these, they stay in place. Highly recommend if AirPods Pro frequently fall out of your ears.

They probably have a decent sense of what proportion of their addressable market for these have Lightning vs USB-C or the other. I know that, for me, with the new iPhone still being Lightning, and having an iPad that is still Lightning, I'd have to start putting USB-C cables in places that I don't have them right now for this to work.

I guess some people may have the opposite problem, but I imagine they have found that there are more people in my situation than not. These are still primarily an iPhone accessory, and the iPhone is still Lightning.

Having said all of that, the switch to USB-C across the board will be welcome. I know people that have to deal with Lightning and USB-C in the Apple ecosystem that can't remember which cable they need for which Apple device at this point, but it'll get resolved in time.
