Yup... for some people, it's really hard for them to realize that they're not being persecuted; they're just acting like assholes and being punished just like any liberal would for the same behavior. They've moderated/banned more than one anti-vaxxer, and we know that one's found on both sides.
I caught the news on the second day, and have followed this thread and the one in the Lounge on and off for some time. I have not posted much in the forums for the longest time, and I just want to get this off my chest. I know this post will probably rub some people the wrong way. I don't care.
My thoughts are with Aurich, the Ars team, and Peter's family, and may everyone get through this ordeal and find peace soon.
Though my registration was in April 2001, I was a lurker long before I needed to make my first post; in other words, Ars has been part of my life for close to two decades. I had never subscribed to Ars all this time, but I shall pledge my support with a subscription after this post.
For the first ten years when I was active, or actively lurking, on the forum, I have always enjoyed Peter's posts, especially in the Symposium and Battlefront. IIRC, someone called him "purposefully obtuse" in battlefront or one of those "tab vs. space" arguments, and he can be down right asshole-ish at times (and honestly I think it was a bit of British humor kind of thing, and also just his peronsa), but his technical prowess is beyond doubt. Even now, the techie/code monkey in me still wishes I could have met him in person, for the techie that he is/was.
It sadden me to see such a talented person going down this path. Someone said that maybe he wanted to get caught. Maybe that's his "out" of the situation. A large part of me hope this is true. I hope that 11-yo is just his fantasy, but if it turns out to be a real person, then perhaps Peter still has the conscience to help her get the help she needs.

I'd like to see some proof that posts were actually being deleted as if they never existed. Moderated out with appropriate moderation messages, sure, but I've been on Ars a long time and I've never seen posts deleted. Even really heinous content gets edited out, but not entirely removed.
I've seen at least one post I reported get deleted recently, plus the other thread that was in the SB was also deleted

I don't have screenshots but this happened:
Some dude name generp (or something such) posted he wanted to get banned/removed as he didn't want to be associated with this site even though his account was years old and many posts (paraphrasing, the post was quite long and I _wont_ even try to go into details).
So I replied to him, I had sent him a pm.
Came back to see if he had replied to me a few times (his post was here for perhaps 15-20 mins) then his post was gone as well as my reply to him ( no edit, just gone) so I figured... shits gotten real. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I can think of a few notably misanthropic posters who regularly post about violent things they want to do to people, sometimes quite specific things to quite specific people. But we extend to them the benefit of the doubt that it's either dark humor or they're just blowing off steam - exactly the same benefit of the doubt we extended to Peter for the better part of twenty years.
Is anyone doing anything about those posters? Of course not, because it's not reasonable to jump to the conclusion that they really mean what they say unless and until they tangibly demonstrate that they really mean what they say. Those posts don't become "obvious signs" until we look at them in hindsight.

If you had something "obvious" (aka actionable) as it relates to his charges and arrest that folks "shoulda [seen] coming", you sure as fuck don't have to be a co-worker or employer to do something about (aka report) it. Stop conflating all the goal posts.
I remember the post that was deleted (in ribs and rabs), that I replied to, there was no feathering any another account or family/friends - it was largely polite but made some 'accusations' which is why I got curious and wrote to the guy.

I have refused for years to give Ars my hard-earned money precisely because of their coddling of Peter Bright and de facto approving of his pedophile jokes (Have you SEEN his Twitter account?), graphic torture fantasies, trolling, name-calling and generally anti-social and uncivil behavior in these boxes, which Ars leadership defended, decided to reward with mod authority and much later, upgraded him to a paid position. It remains a mystery to me why Caesar and company did so, but we can all see how well it worked out for them. Just a colossal blunder all around and a huge stain on an otherwise useful forum.

Peter Bright is, and ever has been, a total arsehole. As in, an "I worked around the corner from him for a few years, hundreds/thousands of miles away from most Arsians, but wouldn't have said 'hi' in a pub like I would've to most people on here" level of arsehole.
But. This was not extrapolatable from the (copious) data of his online life to within anything like reasonable confidence. No-one in his family, or friends group, or working at Ars HQ, or on this forum, (unless they had more info than what's in his postings) should AFAICT have "seen it coming". Arsehole /= paedophile, the world would be hell if so.
(FWIW, I v. much hope he's merely burning his life down in the most grotesque and permanent way he could think of, suicide by legal system, and has not gone so far off the deep end that anyone real got hurt -- but either way, to the armchair commentators with 20-20 hindsight all demanding their pound of flesh: the man is fucked up, let people grieve for who they thought they had and stop twisting the knife; it's not their fault he crashed and burned like this.)

I have a bit of a story on that.
Quite some time ago (well over a decade ago, since I was using ICQ at the time), there was some discussion about UK and US politics in the Soap Box. I was surprised to get a ping from Peter on ICQ, so I accepted the chat. The conversation started out civilly enough, but it got shitty and abusive pretty quickly, with him declaring that as a US citizen, I didn't know shit about the UK governmental structure*, but he understood US politics better than I did. After a little abuse, I said that I was done with the conversation, and asked him to stop. He continued harassing me until I went and blocked him.
It came up some time (a few years) after that, and I finally told the story, adding in that I thought Peter was drunk at the time (otherwise, why would he open a private chat just for that?). Several Soap Boxers refused to believe that the conversation had happened - that either I was making it up, or I had to be mistaken, it must have been someone else.
* Mostly because I stated that I believed that the Royal Family does still have some power in the system, and he insisted that they were a meaningless figurehead with no power or authority at all.
I am NOT arguing if that was right or wrong to nuke it - that's Ars call, not mine.

Law enforcement/judiciary/etc can't legally accept gifts related to their job. On top of that, they never accept any kind of free food because it could be poisoned or even just laced with LSD or weed. If you managed to send them anything, it would be routed directly to the trash can.
I doubt anyone is actually serious to send food (or as pointed out above) bombs to the prosecutor

Speaking of Venn diagrams and overlap, has anyone noticed there are more than a few similarities between Peter Bright and Ben Kuchera? Both are avowed male feminists, express some rather "interesting" views here regarding pedophilia and rape, massive personality issues. Might be worth looking into.
