#DrPizzaGate?

4chan beat you to that. They are convinced Peter's arrest and the fact that his handle is Dr. Pizza proves once and for all, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that Pizza Gate was real all along.

I'm not sure how that logic chain works, but they're convinced.

The original PizzaGate conspiracy theory was that there was a Clinton-controlled child sex ring in that pizza restaurant's basement. I'd love to know how they connected the anti-Hillary basis to Peter.

I stopped tracking the 4chan threads after the weekend, but it was literally only two things that linked Peter to Pizzagate:

1. His handle is Dr. Pizza
1. Peter made some tweets making fun of Pizzagate, and even jokingly wondered what his link to Pizzagate would end up being since his handle is Dr. Pizza.

That's it. They just took it and ran with it. They aren't the smartest people in the world. Reading the threads wherein they attempted to "investigate" people either actually close to Peter, or in a few cases people who had merely liked or commented on his social media, was like watching the world's dumbest, most racist detectives bumblefuck their way through spurious links and dubious "facts." Speaking of the racism, it's like they can't go 10 comments without someone calling someone else a [set of racist epithets]. Also half of them have Nazi flags as their insignia or whatever.

If it wasn't for the fact that these pieces of shit can and have caused very real problems in the form of swatting and/or doxing in the past, it would merely be comically pathetic. Now it's comically pathetic but also potentially threatening.

easy. Democrats/liberals are evil, therefore every rumor that says Democrats/liberals are involved in evil things is true. Mr. Bright is a liberal male feminist, so he's naturally involved in all of the Democrats' evil doings.

I wish I was joking. these are people who are so steeped in the mentality that anyone who isn't Ward and June Cleaver is literally out to "destroy America." Or as Jon Stewart so succinctly put it, these are people who think they "own" America and they alone can decide who gets to be American.

But Jesus Tapdancing Christ the "like what we do or GTFO" attitude that comes from the top is what drove me away from Ars, it's a shame that nothing changes.
Forgive me for what may seem like a stupid question, but if you were driven away from Ars then why are you posting? Did you just feel like it would be fun to wander in, Grandpa Simpson style, take a dump, then wander back out again? Or is there more to it than that?
Excuse me for commenting on a community message board. Is that what I did?
I feel like you missed the point of the question. I bolded it for you.

I mean, I generally find that if I feel like I've been "driven away" from something, I have no interest in going back. YMMV, I guess.

am fairly sure it's just a reference to him eating a lot of pizza.
I'm not convinced of that, in hindsight (which is rose-colored, I know). I have been lurking this forum since before my join date, and I always noticed that guy's 'prodding of sexual norms' as being well beyond the realm of logical discourse. We'd be remiss to assume that he got caught during his first 'tryst', as well. Let's not be naive, after the fact.
It's DrPizza because "Peter" -> "Pizza" and because he likes stuffing his face with pizza. Iirc, that was his nick from before Ars, back in the 90s, long before "pizza" had any colloquial connection with child porn.

This isn't an issue of naivete.

Also, Peter is a...male feminist!

Hi, I haven't posted here in a long time. I want to say a few things here, after trudging through 12 pages after being shocked by the news reports -

1) Right up front, my condolences to the team at Ars. This is a horrible thing to find out about someone you know, and for some he was a friend or more. If this was a close colleague of mine I would have a lot to say to my counsellor for quite some time going forward. I know you all know this intellectually, but I'll repeat it especially given some of the comments in this thread: It's not your fault, you couldn't have seen it or prevented any of this, you may be seeing some things clearly in hindsight, but nobody could have seen this specific thing coming.

2) I agree Ars has had a culture problem at times, I stopped posting here because of it. I'm not going to go into the details here because that is inappropriate, this situation is not an excuse to hash out all our grievances ever with Ars and somehow tie them to Peter being a paedophile.

3) And again, on that topic, there is literally no way anyone here ever should have concluded that Peter was willing or capable of committing the acts he did, no matter what he said here in these forums, how he treated you or others, or how you perceived his arguments. This situation is the fault of Peter, and Peter only and punishing his friends and colleagues for his actions is irresponsible and abusive to people who are also going through a trauma here.

I'm sorry about this whole situation, I sincerely hope the victims are fictional, and that everyone on the staff or formerly on the staff gets the help and support they both need and deserve.

It's interesting watching how googling Peter Bright's name produces changing results over time. Fewer and fewer results from alt-right/far-right pages (Cernovich's dross is still up there though) and more results from pages about other Peter Brights in the world. I gotta feel sorry for them right now as I bet they are catching some flak just from name association...

I'm beginning to get past this now a bit. I've gone from wondering how or why such an intelligent man would apparently let himself get caught (I can't let go of how obvious the sting was) to thinking that he really was that far down the pedophilic rabbit hole in his own mind he couldn't even judge. It was just the next hit, and all the wrong neurons were firing in his mind. Reading about his history of posts on AoC issues etc has also helped frame his apparent pedophilia as something more in keeping with his real self. I never knew that stuff... Anyway it just felt like watching someone commit a particularly horrible kind of suicide - life behind bars in a federal prison as a child rapist can only be the grimmest of lives. He'll probably actually die in prison if there's anything beyond fantasy to his discussion with the FBI agent in the transcript.

But, as I come to accept that he really is a pedophile, I'm losing any sense of horror at how he got caught, and just thinking - oh well, one more fucking evil person banged up for good. I'm pro-DP for such people too and can't make exceptions just because I knew one. I guess its just making that mental transition from the 'person you knew' (however lightly) to 'the person they really are'.

I really hope his wife and family are gonna be OK. Anyway, I think I'm done with this story. I really want to move on. I feel sullied by this news (and by my passing contact with the absolute braindead dreck the far-right publish. Really, WTF is wrong with Cernovich? I don't know how you can be that dumb.)

Calling someone who was soliciting women for sexual access to their underage children a feminist seems disingenuous, wrong.

Nah, he's pretty reliably taken feminist positions (at least since gamergate - a search of his posts seems to suggest a change of heart around then). You don't get to disassociate him now just because that association has become inconvenient. In fact this sort of thing is why "male feminist turns out to be sexual predator and/or violent against women" is this generation's "homophobic preacher/politician turns out to be gay". People have noticed the correlation.

People or right wing idiots?

There's been a literal shit ton of right wing, chauvinist pedophiles. People have basically noticed the correlation since always.

Roy Moore still exists.

There are plenty of pedos of every political persuasion and walk of life, it isn't tied to the left/right wing, or blue/white collar, or race, religion, or creed. Some people are cursed with that compulsion, often fostered through abuse as children themselves. Weaponizing it, politicizing it on either side should be beneath us all. But yeah, speaking of Roy Moore, probably best not to vote them into office.

Yeah, people have always called out hypocrites for being hypocrites. Right-wingers just enjoy calling out "male-feminists" for being hypocrites because they've rightly been called out themselves for being on the wrong side of the feminist/misogynist divide since like, always.

*sigh*

Note that I said "male feminists" and not "left-wingers". The reason is that being left or right wing is not the opposite of being a pedophile, so it's not an apt comparison. The point of the comparison is that the homophobic preachers act aggressively homophobic in the hopes that doing so will keep people from suspecting they're gay. Because they're so zealously anti-gay people are inclined to think it unlikely that they're gay themselves. After all, why would they advocate so viciously against their own interests? Likewise with men who like to abuse women/girls. By being a vocal advocate of women's interests they hope to lull them into a false sense of security to make it easier to prey on them. Of course in the case of the homophobes that's turned out to be a common enough strategy that it became a cliche. That's now starting to happen with male feminists too. And it's not just the right who have noticed this, feminists have too. Quite a lot actually.

I haven't been in the Ars forum for a few years, but when I saw this story pop up in the news like everyone else I was pretty shocked. My condolences are with the Ars staff and anyone who personally knew and trusted him, I can't imagine the kind of conflict and heartache something like this could cause.

It's also depressing to see the garbage that's getting posted into this thread. What the fuck is wrong with you Dystopia? Log off for once in your life.

Nobody's having the discussion he wants to have, thus he is crapping all over this thread in an attempt to force it.

It's an interesting concept, i.e. does a person** who's spent years expressing 100% support for feminist platforms suddenly become not-a-feminist when it's discovered that they're sexually attracted to pre-pubescent girls, and that they've acted on that attraction? Not really germane to this particular thread, though.

** I'm not referring to Peter specifically, here.

I believe it was a reference to how all the alt-right coverage of Peter's arrest made sure to refer to him as a "male feminist."
Correct.

I probably should've said "mAlE fEmInIsT!!" to make it more obvious. It's just such a dumb phrase; you're either a "feminist" or you're not, regardless of your sex.

There's a "PeterB" on the forums who registered after Peter changed his nick from "peterb" to "DrPizza". He's only posted once, but I hope he isn't getting any flak from the 4chan doxxing machine!

Yep. Petwar having the "courtesy" to ask if his next underage victim was hetronormative would be a demonstration of this.

I'm new here, long time lurker on the forums though - I brought up the drPizza /Peter Bright thing in the the forums and was hit with "trolling" (had no idea this second forum existed - found it via twitter (of all places o_O ) )
would be nice if you mods explained to the newbies with a link to this forum instead of just hitting us for trolling you know :eng101:

back on topic:
Absolutely sickened, this happened (after a few days of me joining), glad there is this thread as on the main forums it's like a big pink missing elephant.

Yeah, I think its more common not with "male feminists" or men who are men who believe in feminist values, but more so those that go around calling themselves that and advertise it on their sleeve/Twitter profile, etc as part of their identity. Almost like they're trying to win points with a certain group to mask other things. Most sincere people don't feel the need to call themselves out on it or wear a t-shirt about it, its evident in their everyday actions. They don't feel the need to be a white knight for women and don't have a savior complex. Though this kind of goes for many people who espouse an ideology of some kind or try to garner attention for it, most people who truly believe something do so effortlessly and don't need to put it on blast, they might not even say so when asked. This is even a behavior observed in people who are emphatically "anti-racist" who act or speak differently around minorities because they sub-consciously have lower expectations.

You weren't posting on forums, you were posting off-topic stuff on front page articles. There's a forums button in the top nav bar. You could have clicked there any time.

Till you just pointed it out to me, I though _those were_ the forums.
Not everyone been here as long as you and knows the site design like the back of their hand. A link would have helped, mods should be there help as well as warn. Anyways, OT on this so will stop here.

Moral posturing, IOW.
I've noticed this, too.

Everyone should be impressed that this thread has been allowed to continue this far. I feel bad for Aurich and the rest of the staff. They are not allowed to comment. I am sure that Peter B's saga will be covered when it further develops. No one knows all of the facts. CN/Ars would be stupid to comment until this progresses further.

Impressed? They let PeterB break the fora rules repeatedly and gave him a job despite obvious warning signs.

Doubtful. The only reason his story was discussed at all on places like Breitbart is he pissed off a few of their Internet stars along the way. Real news outlets don’t really care that the FBI busted a man soliciting sex with children online because that happens all the time. It doesn’t attract clicks unless you’re the Subway guy.

Peter isn’t really notable for anything else he has done.

Hindsight is dead easy. This s BS.

I think there were obvious signs, like his repeated arguing about age of consent laws in particular, but his posting behavior alone should have precluded employment here. Technical prowess aside, he had a huge history of poor behavior and and earned all the ire directed at him, in spades. Things like shitting in a thread about bachelor recipes with 'cumming on a wheatabix' or something (I'm getting that one second hand from another former poster).

Simple enough to say there's no significant reason for Ars Staff to suspect Peter of being a child rapist. Not so easy to say they had no reason to question employing him.

This place is also VERY liberal with many staff voicing anti Trump statements on the forums and twitter, the headline/s almost writes itself for the lazy journo:

Anti Trump writer ...
Liberal anti Trump website...
A website known for banning Trump supporters...
A tech liberal ...
etc etc etc

Everyone should be impressed that this thread has been allowed to continue this far.
And everyone knows this thread is one comment away from being locked and/or deleted.
I've seen posts in this very thread disappear (including one of mine), so there is editing behind the scenes but why would they want to delete
this thread anyway? It's not going to stop the conversation and here they can see what's on people's minds without going to Satans pit (also known as 4chan) or reddit or (ugh) twitter.
