I honestly think the Evangelicals have gotten so extreme they've alienated their less extreme members who, in many cases, became non-believers.

For example, you can only disparage women for so long before the women just leave.
It's almost too bad there isn't another "undiscovered" continent for them to go to and leave the rest of us alone. If they ever wanted to build some kind of colony ship like in The Expanse, I would be very willing to donate to that construction if they would be gone within my lifetime.

Trans World Airlines.. one of the most famous "billionaire buys a company, takes it private and destroys it" stories.
Yeah, I knew that. I kinda wish Pan Am would come back, if only for all the movie spots it has gotten over the years.

Also:

"If you want to become a millionaire, start out as a billionaire and then buy an airline." - Richard Branson

(Probably stolen from some prior robber-baron.)

I have often wished there were an identical planet earth on the exact opposite side of our solar orbit so the two cannot see each other. Move all the hell-bent authoritarians and religious fanatics onto the other planet prior to the Renaissance and leave the 'normal' people on this one. Then see which group invents satellites first, so they can discover that the other planet exists.

I suspect one of the two planets will never make it out of the Middle Ages.

Hopefully in cases like these nominal means: “you might be able to afford to put extra cheese on the pizza you’ll be buying with your ‘damages’”.
My favorite nominal damages example is "the lowest coin of the realm" in the QB VII series (1974). Much less than extra cheese.

I'd say they'd be lucky to not wipe one another out if you have nothing but a bunch of authoritarian fundamentalist types. Once again, Carlin had these people pegged decades ago.

Cryin' shame he's dead. The world could use his particular brand of wisdom now more than ever. He'd have no end of material after the Trump presidency, Boris Johnson PMship, QAnon, and people like George Santos (or whatever name he's using this week). Any one of those could have easily been enough for a 2-hour HBO special.

I once asked a good friend of Hunter Thompson what he'd think of Trump. The guy responded that he'd probably be ranting about the End Times.

Then again, Doc Thompson said all that he wanted to say about the direction he saw the country going on February 20, 2005.

I often think we need to use a word other than "conservative" for OAN, Fox and the like. It shouldn't automatically be a synonym for crackpot, but that's the way it's going!
Why shouldn't "conservative" mean "crackpot"? They earned it via nearly 60 years of concerted effort.

In 1964 the Republicans nominated Barry Goldwater, a conservative with strong libertarian leanings. In 1968 they nominated Richard Nixon. Nixon opened his arms to all the racists who were upset with LBJ over the Civil Rights Act and Voting Rights Act. When religious conservatives became upset with Roe v. Wade in 1972, the GOP was open to them. Even Goldwater knew they were bad news.

In 1980 Ronald Reagan continued to wink at racists and openly embraced the religious right. He was openly hostile to the federal government he wanted to lead, and embraced the crackpot "trickle down" economics that remains a cornerstone of Republican economic "thinking". Reagan also ended the Fairness Doctrine, the FCC rule that said broadcasters using the public airwaves need to provide balanced coverage political controversies. This led to the rise of Rush Limbaugh and his endless stream of rightwing propaganda. This is the era when the right began to treat "liberals" and "Americans" as two mutually exclusive groups.

By 1992, the GOP had held the presidency for 20 of the last 24 years and had come to see the presidency as their right. I don't think they have ever lost that viewpoint. They got very angry that upstart Bill Clinton took the presidency away from them and looked for every pretext to damage his and his wife's reputation. The 1990s were the period when the GOP began reflexively opposing any proposal by the Democrats, simply because it came from the Democrats. This is also the era when Fox News went online and freely mixed actual news with Limbaugh-style propaganda.

The 2000s were when the long-running theme that you were either pro-Republican or anti-American came to the forefront. They also decided that losing the popular vote and winning the electoral college by a razor-thing margin was no reason to moderate their policies. Throughout these decades, GOP coddling of rightwing extremists and hate groups allow them to grow. In 2008, when a black man was elected president, they truly lost their shit.

Since then, the GOP has spawned increasingly wacko candidates, culminating in Donald Trump, easily the most incompetent and corrupt person ever to stain the White House. They have also been more and more open about taking and holding power by any means necessary and have gone so far as to defend an armed mob storming the US capitol building with the intent to murder the politicians they don't like.

Throughout all these decades, the "real conservatives" decided to give the crazies a free pass in exchange for votes. This had the effect of increasing the power of the crazies within the GOP establishment, to the point where now the crazies are the GOP establishment. The reason why "conservative" = "crackpot" is because "real conservatives" not only let it happen, they made it happen.

Incidentally, the proportion of Americans who identify as Evangelical has halved in the past 20 years. Probably they're getting sick of being a political football, and the butt of countless jokes.

While trying to directly refute a position held due to motivated reasoning may be impossible, taking the psychiatric approach of addressing the motivation held in the first place might be effective.
I honestly think the Evangelicals have gotten so extreme they've alienated their less extreme members who, in many cases, became non-believers.

The term "entitlement program" is actually originally legislative jargon. It refers to federal government programs whose funding is automatic, as opposed to being set in the annual appropriations process. Hence, the program is statutorily 'entitled' to its funding.

The popular usage of 'entitlement program' is a rhetorical device (I would say sophistry) to stir up public sentiment about them.
For the UK census I ALWAYS put "Jedi Knight" as my religion. As far as I am concerned it is NO business of ANYONE what religion (or not) I believe in.

Another fascist aiding group losing in court again. You've got to wonder how these Trumpsters are able to fool themselves into thinking they have any legitimate position in any arena where facts and truth reign supreme.
They're able to fool themselves and others (who eventually become like them) in a world where "facts and truth" do not reign supreme. You see, Trumpster facts, for example, is that the elitist political left in the United States is depriving us of freedom and that abortion is murder.

And what is truth in 2023? Well, the far right did a fabulous job at appropriating postmodernism. Postmodernism, a liberal academic fad that promised emancipation for all marginal people by liquifying (perhaps even vaporizing) Western, patriarchal, objective "truth," backfired. There is no objective truth; there is only subjective truth. Trump's truth is just as valid as your truth. The modern (pre-postmodern) facts and truth (and logic) were unifying and reigned supreme. Not now. Now, every individual gets a say in truth, even for far right extremists.

This court victory indicates only that one version of the truth won out. An opposite example of other version of truth winning out is the recent Supreme Court ruling that Roe v. Wade is not constitutional.

Don't get too excited. Fascist-aiding groups will continue to spread their truths and win court victories. It's just a matter of how well they do it with rhetoric that taps into parts of the human condition (see, e.g., grievance addiction).

The same overweening sense of entitlement that drives them to call programs like welfare and Medicare "entitlement programs."
The problem here is those literally are programs administering entitlements. The word entitlement quite literally, in a legal sense, means something to which someone is entitled. As in they are legally owed the benefit in question as a matter of law. Add in that the programs are entitled to their funding and the term not only applies but must apply since that's the fucking definition of it. The problem here is allowing conservatives to whine about that being a bad thing and not calling them on their bullshit.

The date that an existing contract expires and the fact that it won't be renewed is pretty basic material information for a company, making this simple information something that it's free (and in some cases required) to share with concerned parties.

Unless OAN had a special secrecy clause in there somewhere, even this little bit that survived is a huge reach. They can press forward if they like but they might not even manage to win that single Nominal Damages dollar at the end. Which would be hilarious and humiliating for them and waste of ton of their money, so... I guess Stay the Course, Guys! You're Doing Great!
The main issue I can see with this winning is that a content provider such as DirectTV also has obligations to the end users of their service to alert them to changes in their service. At a certain point, one of those obligations outweighs the other. Moreover, I feel fairly confident that language to the effect of "unless disclosure is in some manner required" was present.

Pan Am World Airways is probably dead after multiple resurrection attempts (at least four I know of, by Eclipse, Boston-Maine Airways, Pan Am Dominicana, and World-Wide Consolidated Logistics).

The Pan Am trademarks are owned by CSX now through their purchase of Pan Am Systems, a company formed by Class II railroad Guilford Transportation Industries. Guilford bought the Pan Am name, colors, and logo of Pan Am in 1998 and used them as common branding in preference to the half-dozen different regional railroads they had bought over the years. CSX acquired PAS/Guilford, and last June finished integrating them into CSX's network as Pan Am Railways.

So are they, FWIW. (Atheist. I've met a super hot satanist, but that's a really small sample size, n=1 isn't really enough satanists to extrapolate.)
I tell you what: I'll sacrifice my valuable time to research the number of super hot Satanists. I'll get back with you on the new sample size!

If you're looking for a place where religion is quite sidelined, I suggest moving to Scandinavia. Here in Norway ~65% are members in the in the national protestant church but only ~10% visit on Christmas and ~2% every Sunday, most never show up except for baptism, confirmation, marriage and funeral and another 22% don't belong to any church at all.

There's about 13% active in other religious communities but pushing your religion on others is generally frowned on and there's a lot of resistance to religious accommodations and exemptions. Like we don't care who you pray to when you get on your knees or your self-imposed dietary restrictions but you have to behave like a normal and decent person in interaction with everyone else.

Other than that I can promise that most people speak English well, first world standards, great nature, terrible beer prices, pouring rain, cold and dark winters and a population that's a bit hard to make friends with but very friendly when you do. I strongly recommend getting into some kind of organized activities, starting up conversations with random people will often get you the "who's this wierdo?" look.

You joke, but I think that would be a great idea. He could lash it together with the sinking ship that is Twitter and two birds and all that... happy coincidence on the pun. And if it bankrupts Twitler even faster... so much the better!

Nah - regardless of how horrible AT&T is, I need their gigabit fiber.. Comcast is way pricier and worse around here.

That's easy, they don't think. At all. Facts and truth are irrelevant to the modern Republican, they just get in the way of maintaining a proper fascist perspective. Therefore, facts and truth don't actually exist and those who deny that, such as judges, are part of the Deep State determined to keep true Americans down.

If you're looking for a philosophy that's easy on the brain cells because you never, ever, have to use them, it's hard to beat the modern Republican platform. Which can be summarized as "Don't worry your pretty little head, just do what your told."
They've recently added another plank to that platform: "Vote for us or we'll shoot you."

https://www.npr.org/2023/01/17/1149464953/new-mexico-shooting-politicians-solomon-pena
Next they'll tell voters that (R) next to a candidate's name means "required" while (D) means "doesn't count."

Conservative means regressive disinformation, it always did. American conservatism has always been about preserving the "natural" hierarchy, where cishet men of European descent rule and everyone else is subject to their whims. The nonsense you hear about the economy, less intrusive government, personal freedoms, etc... are all smokescreens for protecting bigotry.*

"I don't want to give out this abortion medication, it's against my personal beliefs."
"Then move out of the way and let another employee do it."
"No!!!"

"I don't want to stamp this marriage certificate for this queer couple, it's against my personal beliefs."
"Then move out of the way and let another employee do it."
"No!!!"

"Government shouldn't be funding college and healthcare, it's against my personal beliefs."
"Then stop collecting FEMA payments, reject Medicaid and SSI, and tell your governors to return federal funds."
"No!!!"

*Non-American conservatism generally lacks the pretenses of protecting the economy, restricting government, and enabling personal freedoms. Those conservatives are very open about using government to enforce bigotry.
