Nintendo Switch 2: This Time It's Not Switch 1

Oh speaking of puzzle (exploration? mystery?) games, also picked up Lorelei and the Laser Eyes on sale. Came out a while ago but just heard about it recently, looks pretty cool. Sale ends today but seems to go on sale regularly.

A random recent sale pickup was The Falconeer. Seems like Ace Combat but riding on birds, or something. Which just reminded me of another game that just came out, Fur Squadron Phoenix, which sounds like a decent Star Fox like from reviews I've seen. I'm really hoping for a Wild Blue Skies announcement at some point, that studio is headed up by one of the original Star Fox devs iirc, and is looking to be pretty nice.

So far I've given [vanilla]Subnautica a good go. Graphically, it's a major upgrade. It now looks essentially like the videos I've seen on other platforms. I'm not sure it's 1440p, but even the title screenis clearly higher res (on a 4k tv). On the other hand, while the game may target 60 fps, it's regularly nowhere near that. The videos I've seen show about 45-50 fps on the safe shallows, and thus it's probably quite nice on VRR handheld. Runs miles better than the OG switch code, and I haven't had a few crashes.

Performance while walking (namely in the QEF and the floating island) is much improved, but certain green textures still make me a touch dizzy.

Now, the unexpected: I've been "clipped" by a certain large creature in end-game zones. Hadn't happened to me before. Fortunately, the bug sent me right where I wanted to!
Worse, there seems to be some collision detection bug with the knife. Slicing ripe marblemelons is so frustrating I swapped my diet to other, less efficient plants. Hitting aggressive fauna seems much harder than before.

I'm about 1h away from running the credits. Will return to Blue Prince (on Mac, sorry) before giving Below Zero a go.

Update: I can't finish Subnautica. Or, actually, I can finish it (do the very last thing you need to do) but then the game will crash halfway through the outro sequence: right after leaving the planet, and getting the message from the Sea Emperor (we are different, but we go together).

The crash has happened twice already. Finding where to report it.

Somewhat major feature amusingly buried down in the latest system update notes:
https://en-americas-support.nintend...system-update-information-for-nintendo-switch
Added “Handheld Mode Boost” to Nintendo Switch Software Handling in System.
  • Handheld Mode Boost will cause compatible Switch software to run as if in TV Mode, so certain functionality may be affected. Please see the on-device description for more details.
So if you had a game that was a bit rough looking cause the scaling or rendered/output was pretty low res handheld, this should help quite a bit.

I wish they'd made it a bit easier to access, but this is fantastic for older games that are likely to never get any kind of Switch 2 patch. It makes Sword and Shield actually look decent in handheld, for example (instead of being a blocky mess, because those games didn't even run at native res on the Switch 1 in handheld most of the time).

Hopefully a future update will add a switch to the quick settings popup that comes up when you hold the Home button. There's no reason for this to be buried as deep as it is (it's near the bottom of the System menu, which itself is at the bottom of the settings screen); games don't seem to have trouble transitioning in and out of boost mode even while running (which makes sense; it's the same as a transition in or out of the dock from the point of view of the game).

And now, Tunic is getting a Switch 2 edition!

Brilliant game if you haven't played. Hope they get it at 1080p 60fps with HDR, as this game was clearly designed with it in mind.

Aside from that, having purchased NSO a month or so ago, I've started playing Mario Kart World again, but this time online. It's a radical change, and is that skill ceiling high.
