Man finally released a month after absurd arrest for reposting Trump meme

Welcome to trumps authoritarian America. Where laws only apply to the rest and not to him or his goons. If your are Republican you can get away with almost anything. Especially white collar crimes like fraud, trying to overturn an election, money laundering, etc.

Republicans are above the law in this regime.

“A free country does not dispatch police in the dead of night to pull people from their homes because a sheriff objects to their social media posts,” Steinbaugh said.

Right. But the USA is no longer a "free country" - the sooner you all realise that, the better.

I hope I'm wrong, but I suspect the stories of ICE abuses and this one will seem like a walk in the park in the coming months and (!) years of this (mal)Administration.

Coming from a formerly Warsaw Pact communist country and a dissident family there, I'd have a few suggestions:
  1. Get a typewriter, anonymously
  2. Get loads of carbon copy paper, anonymously
  3. Samizdat is a thing, start with 1984 (soon to be banned)
  4. Copy the banned books and distribute them among the good people
  5. ...
  6. Get facial scanned by the police AI on the way to the grocery store and apprehended for being the wrong colour of the day
  7. ???
  8. If you do actually survive all of that, write a samizdat about it and go back to 1.

I truly believe that those behind Trump's Authoritarian motions, want Americans to retaliate. They want their Tienanmen Square as more like infront of the White House with militarized troops. There are police that want to kill non-fascists, there are ICE that are radicalized by not being trained in law enforcement and empathy. That arresting or even shooting Americans is acceptable and they don't see it "against the Constitution" because they are told the Constitution is under threat as a lie. As propaganda we see already with GOP-funded billionaires that don't care about poor, about sick, about non-Christians.
Its treason actually. Attacking drug running boats with weapons and military that cost more than the probable drugs they assumed were on the boats. Destroying evidence along with foreign citizens without due process.
The president needs to be removed from office, the VP held accountable for actions promoting hate, and lies. Using AI propaganda against freedom of speech (No Kings was not violent). Manipulation of markets with a personally owned social media (Truth), strong arming and colluding with news sources like AON, Fox, etc. Quid pro Quo for CBS and elimination of reporters from Federal offices and discussions that the public is entitled to.
Steven Miller, Russ Vought, those behind Heritage Foundation, Peter Thiel, Elon Musk, need to be arrested and stripped of their possessions. Trump's family must also be permanently banned from holding ANY office of any organization, business or even imprisoned.
No president should have their own social media to influence.
No president should be allowed to claim "emergency powers" when we aren't being invaded. We aren't at war. There are a few entitled people with an agenda that wish to burn the country and have no idea that ... it won't work.
Vote. Sue. Resist.

Law enforcement and prosecutors who maliciously and in bad faith charge, arrest, prosecute, withhold evidence, etc. and/or conspire to deprive innocent people of their rights should at minimum lose their licenses and be jailed 1:1 equivalent for time served by the victim. No fines, no slaps on the wrist, no probation.

Probably 2:1, as they should know better.

Maybe not lost, but - from outside - it's looking mighty bleak, indeed. The fact that 40+% (as of a week or so ago) approve of Trump does not bode well.
I think the threats here are pretty self-evident for someone paying attention.

Trump's support has been eroding as people start actually paying attention. He has the lowest polling of any president. On top of that, we just had the largest demonstrations the US has ever had. People are getting motivated. And the financial hit is going to keep coming as Trump betrays people, with farmers feeling it right now.

The problem "the bleak is all over" stance is that it takes the wind out of the sails of the fight, and we are in a fight for this country. Its just like the doomerism over the climate with people telling lies that it is too late.

The cause is never lost; most of human history has been under autocratic regimes.

The US is a police state today. That's already done. The task isn't to prevent it becoming one, but to get back out of one.

As someone from the area (and familiar with Perry County, specifically), I would like to point out that Perry Co has been like that for decades. It's a little podunk rural county with a tiny population and no real tourism or other attraction (other than Loretta Lynn and her Dude Ranch. RIP), so it's extremely poor and backwards (and inbred, nepotistic, etc). It's one of the rural counties that gives the entire state a bad reputation. Haha.

The biggest draw is the Mennonite population, really.

Js, this isn't the breaking news story it's being made out to be, just situation normal in Perry County, Tennessee.

That said, it's as stupid and ludicrous as it is being made out to be, and my guy is about to own that county, literally. Haha

I don't know, but based on everything in seeing online, not sure what it would take for them to finally realize democracy has already been killed there. I'm doubtful many would even after Trump just declares himself winner and goes 3rd term. Thousands have already vanished from Alligator Alcatraz after all.

Samizdat is a heck of a lot easier to pull off today with satellite dishes and USB keys and TOR and encryption etc etc.

Wut?

Where is there insurrection? If your taking about my town (Portland) note that our police force just testified in court today that ICE agents have been firing teargas at pepper balls at the police.
Needs a link: https://newrepublic.com/post/202443/portland-police-chief-donald-trump-protest-tear-gas-accident

"That day, federal officers tried to use a launcher to fire tear gas at protesters occupying the ICE headquarters’ driveway. But they missed, and instead sent a can flying onto the roof of the building, where more federal officers were stationed. Those officers mistook the friendly fire for an attack by the protesters, and retaliated by firing tear gas and rubber bullets into the crowd, ultimately hurting local law enforcement in the process, according to Schoening."

10:1 because the damage in trust to our institutions is immense. 100:1 would probably be more commensurate with the damage they do.

Law enforcement is a noble profession, and one that our society needs. We need all Americans to feel (and be) equally protected under the law, and we need to severely punish those that abuse and undermine the immense trust that has been placed in them.

There was that time and also this: https://www.oregonlive.com/crime/20...on-between-local-police-federal-officers.html where Portland Police were hit with pepper balls and told to 'help or get out of the way.'

This is the exact first-amendment-trampling censorship the right keep claiming to be victims of. All projection. A literal government entity, without cause or justification, imprisoned someone for their speech. trump literally incites an insurrection and got booted off a private entity's network, and they all crowed about his rights.
