Liveblog: Google’s 10/4 Pixel Phone Event starts tomorrow at 9am Pacific

I can't help but think about that one tweet that was made saying how this event will be comparable to when Android was announce and how we'll be talking about it 8 years down the line. I highly doubt it, to me it seems like they'll just release a bunch of devices tomorrow, VR, new Pixels, tablet(s), something for your home, etc. I don't see how we'll talk about this 8 years from now, because these devices will probably only last 2-3 years(the Pixels, not the pixel line. The pixel line will probably be the new Nexus, somewhat obscure and not that well known in the mainstream market), and Google will probably discontinue either the VR device or the home Alexa-device before we hit the 8 year mark.

Unless they announce something like "hey we fixed fragmentation" even if it requires everyone to be on Android 7.1 then I don't see how we'll be talking about it 8 years down the line.

Will someone at the event ask about the OS update policy if it is not mentioned? The support lifecycle is still Android's main shortcoming compared to iOS and providing iOS-class software support (iPhones get security fixes for 4+ years) would do more than anything else to set these devices apart from the rest of the pack.

If Andromeda OS gains a foothold in the laptop space in a way closer to Windows than to ChromeOS, we'll be talking about it eight years down the line. That's a big "if," but that's what I took that comment to mean.

I'm pretty disappointed that a new Nexus Player isn't on the docket. It seems like Android TV is gaining some serious traction, and there really should be a reference design. Right now, the de facto standard is the Shield, but it's not even on Nougat yet and probably won't be for a couple of months.

Man, Intel really fucked them by dropping support for that line of Atoms.

I think that the lack of support is Google's fault.

OTOH, there is the Xiaomi box.

Google is still supporting the Nexus Player (it does have a Nougat build, and it was released same day as the Nexus phones and tablets got it), they just can't make any more at this point because Intel discontinued the processor. I was hoping for a new Nexus to be announced so that people could actually buy one.

that explains why there's not many for sale, and the ones on ebay have stupid prices.

Got mine for $50. Wish I got one at target when they were $25.

It works but needs reboots to stream Netflix smoothly after a week or so. I was thinking of a roku but the new mi box has spdif for my old receiver.

The new Xiaomi Mi Box is $69. It supposedly does 4k, though early reviews state that it drops frames sometimes. Nothing a software update won't fix.

That's not going to go over well with the Arsian Android Army.

I like it, but I got rejected from the Android National Guard for being blasé about my Galaxy Nexus's flimsy, plastic removable back, so I'm probably not the person to ask..

though it takes courage to make bold decisions

In the US, we're teaming up exclusively with Verizon.

Idiots.

IDIOTS!

These blowhards ruined the Galaxy Nexus and you hand them the keys to your new kingdom?

Well, you don't have to use Verizon...

I really, really like the idea of Google Assistant, Cortana and Siri, but I feel so uneasy sharing all this information with them. Everybody's heard the line "When the service is free of charge, you are the product!"

Google is collecting all this information on me - who I am, what I buy, who I talk to, where I go, what I (watch, read, listen to, talk about... am) - and their terms of service basically reserve the right to use all of it however they see fit.

So, yeah, these digital assistants seem sooo nice, but I feel like I'm selling my soul using them.

They're graciously offering to store all of my photos for free - five minutes after telling us how advanced their AI has already gotten in recognizing what's on them.
Somewhere, someone at Google must realize how creepy all of that is.

Raxiel[/url]":12agx687]So a phone with a good camera and a fancy launcher which could be installed on any recent android device.

Nothing special, so disapointed.

You missed the VR helmet made with recycled jeans.

I did miss that, I closed the stream as soon as the price was revealed.

I understand they are trying to sell something, but it just felt so cringingly false. There is no such thing as 'built in' because Google has made such a big deal out of ripping as much of Android out of the core OS and moving it to the play store, the things they gush about we either already have (allo, duo, photos) or could download from play (pixel launcher).

Instead we get iPhone prices, an iPhone adaptor that's worthless to those of us who don't own apple devices, a great camera (which as is the nature of things will be superseeded by q2 next year), and unlimited high res on google photos as a perk.

The last one is really nice (provided you have the data plan to make the best use of it), but I'd have taken £450 for the base model over it given the choice.

So the question is, after loosing my Nexus 5 last week, do I order a 5x today, or wait and see if the price drops over the next couple of weeks?

Uhh, no it's not.

Where?

I'm refresh every couple minutes. Fuck the helpdesk q today..

Heh. Well, they sure had no problem disabling the "Buy Now" button for the Nexus phones.
