I am going to go into it considering it non-canon fan fiction. Hopefully they can get on their footing for this season. I enjoyed the setting, the characters (on their own) and everything, but the pacing and the... choices for story... were rough.

Hopefully they have some Tolkien fans on staff for this season? I really want to like this. :|

Sorry, but I gave the first season a shot and was not only let down but insulted by how little regard they had for Tolkien's work.

Not to mention how bad it was. Bad acting, bad writing, bad costumes...

I know they won't but I wished they'd just stop.

As lackluster as the first season was in terms of story, it was a beautiful looking show. You can tell they spent a lot of money on it.

In some ways. But certainly not in the wardrobe department and the overuse of and obvious CGI.

That introduction of Mordor shot...

I remember my wife's reaction to first season's presentation of the three rings. The characters are gazing in wonder at rings that, in my wife's opinion, looked like they came out of a Cracker Jack box. And then there's 'Elrond', looking on with an expression that seemed to say: "I thought mine would be...you know...cooler?"

Perhaps we didn't see that scene quite the way it was intended.

Get ready for the second season of Prime Video's original series, Lord of the Rungs: the Rings of Power.

Please fix this typo. Rungs --> Rings.

Edit - Thanks for fixing the typo!
Should have been The Lord of the Rings: Rungs of Power. Showing Sauron's rise to power by climbing the metaphorical ladder of Middle Earth's hierarchy.

The first season brought us beautiful settings, beautiful people, and meticulously crafted CGI. Numenor at its zenith! The Southlands before Mordor! Sauron & Galadriel looking cover-model hot!

It also brought a narrative pace that made Tolstoy look fast and dynamic, littered with continuity and consistency flaws that made suspension of disbelief impossible. Are the Nunenorean ships built with Time Lord TARDIS technology, or do horses and soldiers and armour just compress into barrels like so many fluffy pillows? What happened to the thousand-degree, million-ton pyroclastic flow just before it hit the camera to allow everyone to walk away with little more than "oh, are my eyes now blind?"

You can't hold up a half billion dollar show just by making viewers hope that the stars' wardrobes will fall off as they exchange smouldering looks. You need character development, dramatic pacing, world-building, dialogue.... and, if it's set in an established universe that's based on rules, it needs to make logical sense and maintain continuity.

I'm not terribly optimistic that this team has learned that lesson.

Sauron blames the dwarves for a failed battle. Sauron mentions to the dwarves that the elves look down on them. Sauron starts complaining that the humans are moving in, taking Dwarf jobs and elven land. Tells Saruman he’s too good to run around helping people. He starts trolling.

It never ceases to amaze me that showbiz people throw so much money at things like this without even a second thought about the quality of the writing. There are so many talented writers out there, and yet hacks end up with jobs like this.
Acolyte was a good example. Over a $100 million budget... it didn't even look like it... and it was horrible.

Like guies, cut back on the effects budget and get some good writers / directors.

Sauron finally enters parliament as member for Clacton.

I think the second part is the bad part.

If they didn't care much for Tolkien and diverged .... but it was good, whatever, we wouldn't mind that much.

"Foundation" barely uses the general concept Isaac Asimov's work ... but people really like it because what they did that completely diverged from the book was still very entertaining.

Lots of people still shit on Foundation. It's just, unfortunately, how people are.

I'm clearly in the minority of the internet commentariat though, because I enjoyed Rings of Power S01 & am actually looking forward to S02.

Guess I'm just a basic bitch.

I really like Random Film Talk. He's made a video on each episode of the first season, plus a "final autopsy" to reflect on and summarize the series. He's also reviewed The Hobbit "trilogy," and it's equally insightful and hilarious.
For a humorous take, there's this guy who always makes me chuckle.

Pitch Meeting

Personally I look at Rings of Power as an example of what happens when you have basically an unlimited budget but no real understanding of the lore or respect of it. They just want to make money and lots of it off of what is a huge, legendary IP and it shows. Most of the critical posts have already repeatedly gone over the various reasons why this show is so terrible.

I'd like to say that I could have enjoyed it if I was totally ignorant to the lore, but even if you ignore the lore the show is just over all bad. Terrible scripts, weak plots, bad acting etc etc.

Within my lifetime we’ll be able to type some words into a box and get a trailer this good.

Within my eventual kids lifetime they’ll be able to type (probably quite a bit more) words into a box and get an entire series this good.

Within their grandkids lifetime they’ll just have entirely personalized content fed into their VR goggles, based on whatever silly prompt they want, or their brainscans, or whatever.
