How to deal with a scam artist that the target doesn't want to push to FBI?

So we got an email from an escort in Utah forwarding what is obviously someone impersonating a staff member (yes, I'm sure) to lure the escort to Florida. Probably not a good thing. Fortunately she is smart enough to not reply, and even forwarded the email to us (so she must have looked up the name and checked us out-smart). We reported the email to Yahoo, and debated reporting it to FBI as well (there is a phone number in the email), but she would prefer not to do that as it might affect her adversely (I understand that).

But can we at least check if that number is a throwaway and if not (let's hope) spam the crap out of it? Any suggestions of good places to post phone numbers to get them picked up by fax spam and telemarketers? Even a mild inconvenience would be worth it to me, but maybe I'm just overly vindictive.

This post is a very strange post. We've got hookers and scammers and the FBI...and someone's phone number. Is this 4chan?

Who is the "us" and "we" here??? How are you involved with escorts and why would they seek you out for a scam email issue?

Can someone explain to me what the OP wrote in English?

There is an escort in Utah. She received an email from somebody inviting her to Florida. She looked up the name in the email, and it matches somebody who works at the OP's company. The OP is sure it is not actually this person. The email from the purported client also contained a phone number, and now the OP wants to spam that number. The escort would rather not involve the FBI, for obvious reasons.

I don't know why the OP is getting involved, though.

Yes, I would not recommend getting involved on any level.

Also, prostitution should not be a crime.

Yeah it's odd. I know. The escort actually now said do whatever, as she is more concerned by the scammer than any law enforcement. The impersonated person is pissed because it's a potential public reputation disaster-even if he denied it the press would already have crucified him. I will sanitize the email and post, just for the read (responding via phone right now).

How would you respond if someone was trying to do bad things under your name? (That's the real question I guess, and it's not rhetorical: what would you do?)

I'd definitely address it ASAP. Put a freeze on credit, change passwords and PINs, advise my financial institutions, etc

That's just a start, I'm sure there are services and web sites with great advice.

My money is on the 'scammer' being a disgruntled ex-employee. Get the escort to come to him in Florida, murder her, leaving a very obvious trail going back to the boss at the OPs company.
