I'm watching it now - thanks for the head's up.

The track is really well laid out. Reminds me of a cross between Portland and Long Beach.

The parade ... not so much. The lack of T&S and splits, differentials, and other timing info is abysmal. Formula E has some work to do on the info they provide, as well as working out the "how to make it exciting" part.

I think there are several ways to do that:
1) slim tires, no foils or wings
2) several classes (like the endurance races at Le Mans, Spa, Nurburgring)
3) stop allowing them to change cars when the batteries run down.

That was a pretty darn good race.

The start was nice and clean, and the last 6 minutes were all fireworks. Best of all, we go green again tomorrow!

What other manufacturers are racing? Is Porsche racing in this series?

Porsche, Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Jaguar, Nissan, DS, and Nio. Additionally the engineering companies Mahindra and Venturi also have teams, and there are a couple of others that buy their motors from some of the ones I've already mentioned.

Mahindra also makes road cars, though I don't think they're sold in the States.

The amount of crap they superimpose over Formula 1 TV coverage, I'd welcome less information. I want to watch the racing, and see the driver working the steering wheel, not some graphic designer's recreation of a video game's user interface, complete with a pointless G-force meter, itself copied from a 90s Mitsubishi Evo.

Most of the premium feeds (Sky etc) have alternative streams you can switch to which often doesn't have the main streams overlays or commentary - this is where people get the uninterrupted footage they post on Twitter etc (see the footage of Hamiltons last lap, uninterrupted and no commentary, just Hamilton driving and talking with his engineer for a decent minute until he passes the line).

60 place grid penalty for changing a motor and battery? That's far more harsh than even the ridiculous F1 rules from few years ago when half the drivers were sent to the back for minor technical problems and replacements.
Also, isnt FormulaE part of FIA? Why isnt this series on f1tv? I will never ever pay for cable television. So instead of getting a few dollars from me every year they get nothing directly. Im sure im not the only one.

The FIA is not the commercial rights holder to F1, that's Liberty Media. Which has nothing at all to do with Formula E.

The FIA is simply the global sanctioning body for motorsport.

The graphics cover the halo. They are not blocking anything of interest.

Except when something happens, and someone forgets to press a button.

Formula E as a ruleset is designed to avoid a lot of the spending arms race that defines F1, so breaking your motor and battery _should_ be punished harshly to avoid overspending.

Otherwise you'd have well funded teams "having a motor and battery failure" just before qualifying every race so they can put a fresh one in.

Those F1 rules still exist by the way, teams have just gotten better at keeping their motors and associated elements alive. Some of the more ridiculous grid penalties were also because of teams (and Honda) explicitly desiring to develop quickly and put in upgrades on tracks they weren't going to do well on anyway.

So... It's already two thirds of the way there according to your own criteria.

The wings on the cars are mostly cosmetic and don't add significant downforce. Cars can lose the wings and run pretty much the same lap time.

They haven't changed cars during the race in over two years.

That was my first FE race for a couple of years. After watching the F1 British GP at the weekend.. wow this was so much more exciting. A proper fight for podium places! Action throughout the whole race! I also liked the short interview with the driver during the cool-down lap.

It doesn't hurt that it was streamed on YouTube instead of having to fork over my life savings to Sky to watch F1.

I have never watched Formula E and wanted to give it a shot. However, after a few minutes my ears could no longer take the "shrieking eels". That super high-pitch noise seemed like something to be used to scared off birds or deter people from loitering.

Perhaps you should check the EQ on your sound system because it sounded just fine to me.

Had Sennheiser headphones plugged into a PC. If I have to adjust the EQ on a PC audio card then I will pass.

This depends on your country, but F1TV premium is $9.99/mth in Canada after years of F1 only being available on our pay-TV sports broadcaster. Especially with the compacted season this year, it's an unbelievably good deal. It's like $3 per race with all these double-headers!

I'm very jealous! In the UK, Sky have exclusive live broadcast rights until 2024, which means we don't have access to F1TV. So instead of $9.99 we get to pay £34 per month for NowTV sports plus an extra £3 per month for HD(!!). I believe Germany is in a similar situation. We do get a free-to-air "highlights" programme on Channel 4 a couple of hours after the race ends, but that's not nearly as good as seeing it live.

It's a shame, especially after the success of Netflix's Drive to Survive F1 documentary, that two of the largest markets (UK - most teams are based here, Germany - Merc, Seb) are locked out by extortionate paywalls.
