Ebola cases in DRC rise to 676 as Kenya protests erupt over US plans

Outbreak responses are still playing catch-up as US works to isolate itself.

But...isolate itself from WHAT? Kennedy is certain that bacteria and viruses don't cause disease, disease is caused by seed oil and food coloring and bad attitudes. If you get ebola you should just start eating right and walk it off. There's no danger needing isolation from all-natural viruses.

No doubt it's the administration's concern for the less enlightened who still believe in "science".

Even discounting the people dead because of prior actions from the trump administration, people are dying in Kenya even before the first ebola patient has even arrived there.
If, god forbid, there is actually an outbreak from this camp this will go beyound denying aid and end up actively spreading the virus.

Isolate from Trump's greatest nightmare: a repeat of COVID - the viral disease that Trump managed to sponsor a vaccine for psychosomatic hoax that can be cured with ivermectin.

I swear when he dies, I'm going on a bender that my unborn grandchildren will feel.
Personally I believe it's morally wrong to wish for people to die.
But...I also believe exceptions can be made for the very worst.
My personal short list is
1. Vladimir Putin
2. Kim Jong Un
3. Donald Trump
It's probably pure coïncidence that these people are also my dream gladiatorial combat opponents.
I'm not sure I can defeat Vladimir with my bare hands so longsword it is.
As for the other two...hah. I'll happily accept a handicap.
All on live TV of course.

Not that anyone should watch, but it's going to be 90℉ in D.C. for tomorrow's UFC "thing" and I pray some camera catches the orange stains on dumbass's collar.

*My Grandfather talked about getting Malaria during WWII and that sounded like hell. I can't imagine what people experience with Ebola.
We used to be a nation that helped, now the people in office help themselves.

Right? I thought if we just let it run it's course we all end up with herd immunity.

“We are utterly disgusted by the government’s apparent willingness to trade national biosecurity and the lives of its citizens for foreign aid,” the Kenya Medical Practitioners Pharmacists and Dentists Union said in a statement.

The Kenyan Government better demand that aid be paid in full, upfront. Just saying.

Do not do that. Instead...

Go read a treatise on democracy. Eat healthy meals all week. Dance in jubilation and make sure to make every person who is not white and wealthy feel at ease and included. Do something for the poor that week. Learn to say hello, thank you, and very nice to meet you, in Spanish.

I don’t want to rain on your dreams, but have you considered there is a non-insignificant chance that your grandchildren will live under the presidency of one of Musk’s childrens?

At least three protesters have been shot and killed in conflicts with police, according to the Kenya Human Rights Commission.
Great. Now we live in a world where Ebola can cause deaths unrelated to the Virus itself.

And now USA has switched sides? Like, it was bad enough we dropped our support of the War on Disease but we are actively looking to spread it to unaffected places now?

Surprised they haven't (publicly) thought to move all Measles cases to somewhere else if this is their Ebola game plan as that's the only way we are going to drop the numbers apparently...

That’s also somehow simultaneously a Chinese bioweapon.
But don't you dare vaccinate people against the Chinese bioweapon! And don't even think about masking up or not going out shopping!

Although a Kenyan court had temporarily suspended the quarantine facility from opening, the Trump administration continues to move forward with the plans.
Trump doesn't even respect American courts, why would he care about what Kenyan courts want?

I cannot begin to describe to you the absolute incompetence, corruption and evil of the current Kenyan government. Look up the current president's history. I kid you not, there are crimes against humanity cases at the International Criminal Court. Do you think he cares even a little whether there's an Ebola outbreak, as long as he gets paid? The dude has grabbed so much land, he literally grabbed a school play field for children in the slums! One of his many nicknames is Arap Mashamba, basically meaning McFarms, for how many farms here's stolen from people and the public.

Clarence Darrow wrote "I have never killed any one, but I have read some obituary notices with great satisfaction."

Snopes claims that quote is often incorrectly attributed to Mark Twain.

It'll be interesting to see how this plays out. Honestly, the sadest part are the people in Africa who are having to suffer and die from this. What a horrible way to go.

Equally unfortunate are the triabalist beliefs and superstitions that serve as a blocker to what treatment does exist. The beliefs and superstitions, if they snowball, contribute to potentially violent mobs that during the course of that violence, may spread the sickness even further through shared contact between individuals, or in some case corpses as the Reuters article linked by Ars showed.

Being a health or aid worker in an African country in an area beset by panic --I can't imagine the stress.

I live in Kenya and can confirm people are extremely concerned and angry (rightfully so, in my opinion) about the facility being built here. People have even been shot while protesting. There haven't been any (known) cases yet but we fear what hosting this facility might expose us to. We're all convinced this is simply a greedy cash grab by our politicians without a care in the world about the rest of us. Our economy and healthcare system simply cannot handle a widespread outbreak, if it were to happen. And, said politicians simply fly out of the country for medical care unlike the commonfolk.

Compared to Covid (which didn't hit us too hard relative to some other countries), Ebola, while having a very high mortality rate, has a low rate of spread. Not exactly comforting, though.

Can we trade you our President Trump for your president? They are both corrupt and completely incompetent, but in different ways, so the change might be refresing for citizens on both sides.

Serious, I am ashamed that my country is trying to pressure yours into risking Kenyan lives. We are perfectly capable of caring for our own Ebola patients!

note to all US citizens: Republicans are happy to have your country turn its back on you when you're in danger.
Is this news?

Republicans have been crowing about "personal responsibility" for decades, and that's exactly what that phrase actually means. Pass the blame off onto the person who's suffering, so you can wash your hands of any moral responsibility to help.
