Why haven't these patches been integrated upstream?
Is Ubuntu the only distro that'd work? What if I prefer Debian or Mint?

According to Barton George, they're trying. Unfortunately, Canonical and Dell aren't the only entities involved. As has been the case many, many times before, the hardware vendors aren't always keen on sharing, and it's hard to convince some companies that the FOSS model works and that it won't infect them with some kind of "open source cancer" that will prevent them from making money.

It sounds like the "Profile Tool" is doing the sort of thing that I'd much rather use a VM for.

Worth noting that Profile Tool doesn't install things willy-nilly--everything it pulls down is containerized and sandboxed.

As far as I know the PPA repository with the drivers has the source, so in that case the source is already available.

I was unable to find anything except binaries in there, and Barton George said that they haven't released the source yet because they're still negotiating how with the suppliers.

If you do see it in there, can you let me know? I'd love to link it in the story.

This review is all well and good, but what is the fully loaded price?

There aren't any hardware options you can tweak for this particular laptop, so the $1549 price is it.
