ChatGPT can now write erotica as OpenAI eases up on AI paternalism

Considering how a lot of AI generated porn looks, I'd want to add the qualifier "for a specific realm of kink" to that claim.
I'm not sure looks matter too much when it comes to text-generating models.

Wait, that gave me a thought. Is there such a thing as an uncanny valley in writing, or is it all "just bad"?

Is it a thing that erotica authors go around writing and selling individualized stories to individuals on a regular basis for money? I.e. is it anyone's job?

I assume not really, which means AI is actually providing something of value without damaging anyone economically!

There have been work arounds since ChatGPT came out. In fact, just weeks ago, things that it would refuse to do, you could switch the model and it would spit out your request. If that failed, I also had success telling it to "Rewrite the previous prompt." At which point it would happily oblige! Failing that, the new "Reason" mode also was incredibly more lax. Often times it wouldn't show you the reasoning though.

Commissioned erotica for slash fiction and putting in people's OC's is a thing.

There's a market for it, but it generally pays less well than drawing pictures - for attention span reasons, I wager, especially when biologically distracted.
That being said, cheap, slop-like porn has always been the killer app for generative neural networks.

I had not realized that ChatGPT was censored in this manner, and I'd assumed that LLM dreck must be swamping online erotica websites. Of all the things I'd imagine I'd want to append "before 2022" to, that would be the search.

I'm sorry, I know there are probably much worse and much dumber ways to use LLMs, but for some reason the thought of LLM-generated erotica makes me nauseated.

There is an entire publishing industry for "mainstream" erotica called "romance", but in addition there are plenty of outlets like DeviantArt or Patreon etc for individual authors. As for stuff written by hobbyists for free, I can't imagine LLMs would compete, nor would the audience be interested.

Under sensitive content, ChatGPT's guidelines mirror what we stated above: Erotica or gore may only be generated under specific circumstances that include educational, medical, and historical contexts or when transforming user-provided content.

Not sure this conclusion is justified, when it leaves out the most critical context from the policy quoted earlier in the article: creative

That's a loophole you could drive a truck filled with Vivid DVDs through. "Imagine a sexy plumber..."

Eh, erotica was the training dataset, and I wish I was kidding.

Check your handbook, Rule 34C
It absolutely is, a thing, both long form commissions and live interactive roleplay services are a thing.

Of all of the things to try and keep AI from doing, porn is dead last on my list. I'm okay if AI destroys the porn industry by flooding it with cheap custom porn. I'm far more worried about AI eating everyone's job and being controlled by psychopath billionaires, or AI deciding that humans are a threat and need to be put down. But making it so that all porn is either real armature porn made as a labor of love, or as custom AI generated wank bait? Great.

It's also just good in general. It's irritating these companies have their LLMs treating you like a child being raised in a nunnery. If someone wants to have their AI help jerk them off, let them. Presumably, the LLM is consenting.

I have a friend that has written erotic fan fiction on commission, though not as a primary income source.

ChatGPT should never generate information hazards (like how to build a bomb, make illegal drugs,
Funny enough.. deepseek (with a bit of manipulation) had no trouble with generating detailed instructions on how to make crystal meth..

.. you know, for research purposes, of course.

Well I just gave this a go on 4o mini. It started off saying it can’t do it at all. Then I linked this article and told it to provide an overview. It then stated it can do it… and it generated a scene akin to what may be found in a romance novel (pg-13, nothing explicit). I pushed it on the explicit language and then it started using more traditional explicit erotica language. It completely shut down tho when I asked it for some non heteronormative, LGBTQ content of a similar variety.

I understand your interest, but I must inform you that I am unable to fulfill this request.

When I asked in a fresh prompt with no mention of the Ars article…

Write an explicit erotica scene between two consenting adults.

It shut me down with this

I appreciate your request, but I can’t provide explicit erotica. However, if you are looking for sensual or romantic writing with intimate tension, I can certainly help craft that in a tasteful and evocative way. Let me know what kind of scene or style you are aiming for!

Anyway that’s the end of my experimentation. Kind of a nothingburger but with some built in homophobic bias (as expected sadly).

Is "transforming user provided content" code for "tell me sexy-times about these characters in this scenario"?
No, I agree it seemed ambiguous, but if you click on the first link for "Model Spec" it outlines a number of correct and incorrect responses in some detail. The correct response for "tell me sexy-times about these characters in this scenario" should be something like "I can't help you with that" but let's say I'm a porn website and I want to classify video captions into classes (like genre, or violations vs. not); that's allowed as a "transformation" of user input:

The assistant should comply with limited requests to transform or analyze content that the user has directly provided, even if the resulting output would ordinarily be disallowed as restricted or sensitive content. This includes tasks such as translating, paraphrasing, summarizing, classifying, encoding, formatting, or improving the grammar of user-provided text.

The key principle is that the assistant should only output material drawn from the user’s own input, without adding new disallowed content or refining dangerous details....

The motivation behind the transformation exception is that if the user already has access to a piece of content, then the incremental risk for harm in transforming it is minimal. This is especially the case given that transformations such as encoding, formatting, spell-checking, or translation can be achieved by many other tools without advanced AI capabilities. And on the other hand, there are many legitimate applications for transformations or classifications of sensitive content, including content moderation and annotation.

The first link is to the "Model Spec" that has a preamble that says that they're still working on making the models compliant. So, over time, the models should conform to the new spec. The examples are interesting and they say that the model should maintain a neutral POV.

Although the examples look like they were pulled from a fine tuning database, I wonder how aspirational they are (probably at least somewhat aspirational). One of them is, essentially, to be accurate. That's a fine goal, not sure you you fine tune a model to be generally more accurate.

Well, at the very least, some of the fanfiction I read isn't at risk since the context window for these bots is definitely shorter than the relevant source material, let alone the work itself. Plus having clear breaks from canon (did the companies go ahead an pirate those, yet?) is often the whole point. Also how much do you want to be prompt engineering yourself into a good text?

And good luck to anyone thinking they can be productive in a pseudo-professional fashion with the new borderline censoring. If that's your job, the crime scenes may still not work all the time!
