Apple consolidates iOS gaming features in new Games app

Will this promote games with more reasonable monetization strategies or is this to help get more whales into the ecosystem?

So much failed potential with the iOS gaming scene, why cant it be more like Steam versus the freemium slop its dominated by.
Apple Arcade does a decent job for the cost. No micro-transactions/freemium stuff.

Did they give a release date for the app?

EDIT: Unsure why the downvotes. At the time I read the article, there was no release date mentioned. Most of us don't follow WWDC closely. Even those of us testing betas. It gets installed during the iOS update. It definitely makes it easier to play games with your friends and stuff. My 11 year old and I played a round of "What the Clash?" tonight.

To you down voters, bah humbug to you too.

So its killer feature is showing you what games you’ve bought. Great job team, you’re launching another banger.
I'm okay with this, actually. As someone who is minimalist on their home screens, having somewhere to go and browse what games I have available to play when I feel like playing something is useful; I'm no longer the person with the folders of games anymore, but I have lots of games I might want to grab a quick minute with.

The rest of this isn't all that useful for me, though...

I appreciate that Apple generally makes it easy to ignore features like this. Like with Siri, I don’t want to use it, and it just stays out of my way.
Really? Every time I open PvZ, Game Center is asking me to login even though I've turned it off in settings.

Edit: am I missing some super secret setting to really turn off Game Center or am I being downvoted because you think I'm lying?

Challenges is not a new feature, nor is seeing what your friends are playing. The only thing that seems new here (based solely on what the article says; I haven't watched the keynote) is the fact it's a standalone app instead of only showing up when you go to Game Center from an app that supports it.

I know you're writing this stuff as the announcements are made, but some critical look at what they're calling new (i.e. the "put non-contact messages in a different folder" from the iOS/iPadOS article, another not-new feature) would be helpful here.

Well, even THAT's debatable. It's $7/mo or $50/yr (in order to get this latter deal, you need to sub for at least one month first). Or, for those who have Apple One, it's on there anyways.

But the gaming library can be hit or miss. I heard a rumor that games on there can't have a maturity rating greater than 12+, which really limits certain content. Resident Evil, quite a few slew of FPS, etc. That isn't to say adults can't have fun on there. I certainly enjoyed my 4-month free trial a few years back*. Other complaints I heard was the lack of support for Apple TV (the hardware, streaming box), but I can understand why it's typically NOT supported... the number of iOS devices outnumbers them by miles! Yet another is many of the games end up being '+' games. Games with the '+' suffix are used to distinguish them from regular iOS games (e.g. Bloons TD 6+ vs. Bloons TD 6). People are clamoring for more exclusives, or higher quality games from mobile.

It is nice for younger kids, not having to deal with ads, nor IAP (IAP that's extra content has to be included by default. For example, the extra/expansion levels in Monument Valleys 1 & 2). Whether or not the rumors I mentioned are true, an overall glance I've done seems to indicate that there are no mature games on there. Worst I've seen was in CV: Grimoire of Souls... Shanoa character is backless (that's how her magical glyphs work), and would be showing as much skin as a lady wearing a swimsuit.

Game Pass, Nintendo Switch Online, and even Netflix Games still gives AA a run for the money (albeit in different ways).

* for those wondering, my faves included but not limited to...
--Castlevania: Grimoire of Souls - although if there wasn't a loophole to fast track farming for materials, I would've written it off long ago
--SP!NG
--Rayman Mini

Non AA exclusives included...
--Monument Valley 2
--Lumens+

All five Apple Gamers will surely appreciate.
The irony here is that you're responding to an article specifically about the pool of iOS gamers, which numbers in the hundreds of millions of people, as opposed to what you think you're actually mocking, which is the relatively low market share of Mac, of which a subset play games.

Try trolling on a more relevant article next time, maybe.

Or that person can grow the fuck up and stop being so juvenile and childish. How embarrassing to fling a "zinger" and have it come back and smack you instead.

That's inertia, a consequence of the App Store's success and NOT a measure of Apple's "gaming" focus or prowess.
The mental gymnastics capabilities of the troll mind is astonishing.
