Anyone bite on AppleCare One?

I mean, that's just embarrassing. Did anyone think for five minutes about this program before Apple launched it?
I feel like this is going to result in a class action lawsuit. Apple prompts you to switch to AppleCare One with the promise that it will save you money, but then (in some cases) can't actually provide what they advertised due to a known issue that has no workaround, and your only recourse at that point is to pay more money than what you were paying originally?! That’s effectively a bait and switch.

I got my iPhone 17 Pro Max yesterday.

I see my options are AppleCare One or AppleCare + with Theft and Loss for $13.99 just for the iPhone.

If I purchased the annual Theft and Loss plan when I ordered the iPhone, the annual price would have been $139.99 so I'd have saved a bit of money.

I would strongly consider the AC One but my devices are old or already have coverage like my M4 iPad Pro, which I purchased with AC last year.

My Macs are 4 and 8 years old and I do plan to upgrade at some point but I'm not sure if the benefits of AC One for Macs are as good value as for mobile devices, since they wouldn't be covered for theft and loss. Or things like drops, cracked screens.

Also, I will likely get a refurbished Mac from Apple so I'm not sure if those could be added to AC One?

I wonder if I could switch from the $13.99 to the AC One plan when I have more new devices.

Hmm, theft and loss doesn't cover AirPods? Or at least they're not explicitly listed, only iPhone, Apple Watch and iPad.

You can move the M4 iPad Pro to the AppleCare One plan and get a refund for the remaining coverage that you've already paid for. So if you were paying monthly for both (9.99 for the iPad Pro + 13.99 for the iPhone 17 Pro Max) your combined individual coverage is already more than the AC One monthly cost, and you can cover an additional eligible device as well.

AppleCare One and AppleCare+ both cover drops and cracked screens for Mac with a service fee. $99 for screen damage and $299 for any other damage.
I had a liquid spill and then a cracked screen within weeks of each other on my M1 Max MBP, so I've paid $398 in service fees since August. First Mac accidental damage claims I've made though. 🙃

Refurbished Apple products are eligible for the exact same agreement coverage options as new ones, both AC+ and AC One.

You can switch from single device coverage to AC One at any time. The process on device should let you know if you will save or not based on your eligible devices on your iCloud account, compared to having separate monthly plans. If you remove a device from AC One, there's a period of time you can readd it or buy AC+ for it without additional inspection.

Theft and Loss coverage is an insurance product and only applies to those 3 product lines.
It only makes sense to add AirPods to AC One if you have an empty slot without a higher cost product to put in there. You sould put your devices with the highest coverage prices on the first 3 slots, and then if you have more that would cost >$6/mo you save by adding them to the plan. Watch AC+ agreement is $5.99/month so it's a penny less than breakeven and AirPods, HomePod, AppleTV never make save money if you need to pay for an extra slot. But if you have an unused slot, there's no reason to leave it empty.

One reason why I was interested in AC or AC One is that my iPhone had a small scratch on the screen, maybe about 1/8 inch long. The screen replacement without AC would be $379 vs. $29 if you had AC.

Well I traded that iPhone in and I got full credit towards my iPhone 17 Pro Max purchase.

I think the trade-in web page say no cracks of any kind.

I sent it in anyways because some third-party sites offered almost as much as Apple, even though I chose the condition as fair, which included cracks or scratches on the display.

But now it's moot.

I would definitely get AC One if it covered theft or loss of AirPods Pros as well as iPhones.

Replacing one APP costs $90.

The problem I have with Apple Care in general is that what they consider normal wear and tear isn't considered accidental damage and isn't covered. So if the screen wasn't actually cracked, they may have refused to do anything about that scratch, even with AC+.

Yeah, I just found this out myself as I (almost) never buy AppleCare. My wife and I just got new (refurb) iPhone 15s to replace our iPhone 12s. Neither of us has dropped a phone in years, but of course, what happens? Shortly after getting the new phones, she dropped hers onto a tile floor and dented the top left corner.

Lucky for us (so I thought), we were still within the window to add AppleCare, and AppleCare covers accidental damage. So I paid for one month of coverage and scheduled an appointment to get the phone repaired.

Turns out AppleCare covers accidental functional damage, not accidental cosmetic damage. The dent of course is purely cosmetic, so AppleCare wouldn’t cover the cost of swapping out the midframe of the phone to get rid of the dent. And the out-of-pocket cost? $399.

So much for that! We took their advice and just bought a case for it that covers the dent!
