“Extremely angry” Trump threatens “massive” tariff on all Chinese exports

There will come a time, hopefully soon, when they will report multiple times a day on the awfull and slowly deteriorating state of his rotting body. So there will be a silver lining to the attention eventually.

I am sure China does take the issue seriously. That is why they have been diversifying from USA since 2016.

I guess USA government is just going to buy the soybeans and burn them to keep the farmers happy. There are no buyers for the soybeans at this point.

Instead of burning the soybeans, let's salt them and cook them in the microwave.

Unfortunately there is a culture where those who have power and influence love playing the victim then use that as a way to get votes by claiming the US is some sort of a victim which is why there is a list of issues that US politicians raise such as deindustrialisation, jobs leaving the country etc. to get votes - the noise I typically hear from American politicians is the complaint that China manipulates their currency meanwhile the US has as an official policy the 'strong dollar policy' combined with a refusal to tax and prioritise spending resulting in massive budget deficits resulting in people buying up US debt (and buying up US dollars in the process) which strengthens the US dollar and makes US exports uncompetitive.

That doesn't even touch on the fact that US businesses are forced to pay for the healthcare fo their employees whereas in every other country with single payer healthcare it is a burden that businesses wouldn't need to deal with. Then to make the clusterfuck sandwich more interesting is 50 different set of regulations, the refusal to standardise regulations at the federal level thus adding more complexity and compliance costs. With all these problems you'd think that a mirror for the US would be a better investment than picking fights with other countries that the US blames for the outcomes of the policies the US have chosen to pursue.

China takes this administration very seriously. The markets see TACO (Trump Always Chickens Out), but China sees an effective tariff rate of 30%-50% which was unthinkable just a year ago.

I think tariffs are an inelegant hammer that hurts both sides, but it's undeniable that it hurts China.
Tariffs do hurt China, but not that much (and they reduced their vulnerability after Trump’s first term). They undoubtedly hurt Americans more. After all, who is paying these import taxes?

Import taxes are a perfectly valid economic tool. However, wielded incompetently, they will do a lot of damage to the one wielding them. Trump is a case in point. China is gaining all over the world from his blunderbuss approach.

Gina Reinhart, Australia's richest woman, bought up rare earth companies in Brazil and Western USA after the February 2025 rare earths brouhaha. In order to have a near-monopoly on rare earths which are outside of China. Because China signalled that they would respond to Trump.

I view this in gender terms. Trump appears to have the memory of a goldfish except for matters where he has been personally slighted, in which case his vengeance subroutine kicks in. Anyway, because Reinhart remembered the brouhaha and Trump forgot entirely, let's assume that at least one person, a woman, is smarter than him.

I'm going to go with it as a gender thing, and so I assert Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez would also be smarter.

Did Trump ever finally "save" TikTok? I've lost track.
Of course he did. Just like he saved the EU from Hitler. Of course, Trump plays 8 dimensional chess. He made the Chinese think they still can meddle with tiktok. So if you read that the deal is no good, don't be fooled. These people just do not understand the art of the deal.

Rarely has someone been more deserving of a thorough, psyche-annihilating humiliation. The entitled, narcissistic, pedophiliac bully needs his rotten mind to be broken beyond repair, and to be left to drool and marinate in his own shit in a hospice where he couldn’t hurt anyone anymore, until his last journey to hell.

Yep, the most anticipated obituary in the history of America, for sure.

"America will be affected."

No, the whole world is affected as the US is a major trading partner and many people around the world invest in US markets and companies. BTC and fiat got hammered in the last few hours of Friday. So fed up with toddlers like Trump able to throw their toys of their prams when they don't like something and next thing everyone's retirement funds take a beating!

Judging from the dementia everyone can see plain as day (when we see him on TV that is him at his best pumped full of steroids and other shit to make him feel more energetic and focused on top of coffee and hamburgers) he won't live to actually run a 2028 campaign, but if he does and the GOP doesn't 25th Amendment him to overrule it, then even if there's no effective Democratic opposition or they are cheated out of the elections by ICE patrolling the polling places with mail-in voting shut down, the beginning of the next term will be a shit show and he still won't make it through both terms.

That could be what the GOP wants to extend both Trump and Vance's rule as long as possible unnaturally but hey.

The problem is after Trump goes whatever comes next is worse because either a Democrat has to be an authoritarian to fix the authoritarian mess, which they don't have the balls to do since centrism of all flavors is the point on the ideological triangle and not the center of the line.

Or you get Vance who is far worse than Trump because he's a competent technocrat better capable of running interference for Thiel, Musk, Miller and all the corrupt Republican tech elite AND wants revenge for Charlie Kirk and won't accept the evidence his own side got Kirk over GOP trans rhetoric.

The GOP populist base wants nothing to do with Vance as him taking office encapsulates Bannon's permanent defeat in rivalry with Musk. Their opinion is going to mean little without opposition that can drive a wedge between the GOP factions quietly without every hyperventilated dispute hitting YouTube.

To be honest I find myself with hope recently that the right wing ideology will collapse in the US and apply a fatal blow to the conservative ideologies in other countries and hope a fairer version of globalization happens that both reconciles with and regulates China as they remove Xi. I see light at the end of the tunnel somehow.

But, my wishful thinking doesn't match the reality of the situation being that America needs to be economically isolated and it's billionaires tracked by other countries on do-not-fly lists because a functional right wing/populist political party in the USA with internet access is a threat to the entire world. Even liberal voters in other countries not named Bernie Sanders will get impugned, ridiculed and isolated on tourism for the centrists' rampant failure to understand what they are dealing with, and rightly so.

Just a reminder that the 25th Amendment doesn't work that way. If the subject objects, and Trump certainly would if he were able, it's just a harder version of impeachment.

We're far more likely to see a Weekend at Donnie's where they pretend an incapacitated or dead Trump is still fine.

This just feels like stock rigging to me. Saw there was a short called on Bitcoin with crazy leverage 30 minutes before this happened. They made 200 million in 2 hours.

At this point I think the best business/investing advice is to watch what trumps cronies are doing. It's gross.
Thanks. Looked it up. At least 2 different accounts did this:

Thanks for those links. I am baffled by this:

The market collapse triggered over 1.66 million liquidations in 24 hours, wiping out $19.33 billion in positions according to CoinGlass data.

According to on-chain analyst @mlmabc, the whale closed approximately 90% of Bitcoin shorts and completely exited Ethereum positions at the bottom of the drop, pocketing between $190 million and $200 million in realized profits within a single day
How are these things "doing it to the libs" and "making America Great Again"?

and realised that designing chips wasn't beyond the reach of all but the huge American multinationals after all.
As I read it, one of the principals of ARM (maybe Sophie Wilson? I'm not clear on that) was visiting WDC, and saw that the 65C816 was being developed by one guy, on paper, on a table. And whoever it was said to themselves, "I can do that!".... and proved to be correct.

In fact, considering how problematic the 65C816 was, I'd say that the ARM employees did a hell of a lot better job.

I think Trump has been very good for the world.
The world has learned that they need to reduce the influence of the USA in their own countries, ie shifting some eggs to a different basket.
And countries are doing this, expanding trade with each other and leaving the USA out of the picture.

The US has built their entire economy and lifestyle upon cheap Chinese goods.

China has the US right where they want them. Likelyhood of US recession grows... It's not good for anyone really, but particularly bad for the US citizens.

I doubt the billionaires will even notice the lineups for soup kitchens if they decide to step foot outside their walled compounds.

Yeah there are a number of stock brokers, and specifically oil investors that have become mara lago bro types that apparently do this all the time. I am a bit conflicted on making any money on it, but I also would like to retire at some point. Thinking taking advantage where I can and ear mark 10% to donate to dems in the midterms but well...gotta get a tracker together first.

Once Trump is out of the picture, I think the Republicans are going to quietly back away from this economic terrorism. Nobody on either side seems to be to excited about his crackhead economic theories.

You mean except for the entire collection of Project 2025 yabbos and their billionaire backers? You really think now that they own the Republican party that they're going to let it quietly slip away?

The funny thing about MAGA is that they are soooooooooo easy to distract. Their entire party and all the politicians have been bribed out from under them and they haven't noticed. The only thing they have noticed is that they get to let the hate flow. As long as they get a license to hate, they're good and won't pay any mind to what their political overlords are doing.

I like to call that the 'Takeda Shingen' approach but your reference is much more recent.

Trump will be the first US President to be destined for taxidermy instead of a coffin. That's just how fucked up right wing voters are.

Xi Jinping will be the second, and AI will be abused to cover the gaps.

Anything Trump or the GOP does, including existing, will either have a universally negative impact or unintended consequences on everyone but himself and most likely had an easier or more pragmatic way of achieving the same results.

This was true for every GOP politician before Trump and will be doubly true afterward.

Just because Trump is a broken clock doesn't mean he didn't pick the worst possible method to accomplish something, and probably the worst possible method to ram it down anyone's throats or twist arms purely because he disregarded malice and resentment in the future as a result of Mafia diplomacy. To the point that most of Trump's 'accomplishments' were better off not done at all.

This has always been how the GOP and other conservative movements in every country on Earth work, they just have different flavors of it tweaked to their own culture and history.

Remember Trump is about to try to pivot from deportations to prison slavery to staff farms with no concept of how fast prison riots on those farms will drive up food inflation rather than lowering farmers' costs AND it exposes the American agriculture sector as the modern mafia it's always been. That's just as evil as Xi Jinping's Uighur death camps.

Doesn't hurt them much at all. They can always sell to the rest of the world. Trump won't last forever. Long term planning would preclude any investment here while he's still extant.

Thank goodness the administration has been acting in a measured and considerate manner for the past ten months, and hasn't been antagonizing or ostracizing longstanding allies by unilaterally discarding signed trade agreements, rejecting the rule of law, or threatening their sovereignty. Imagine how much worse the situation could be!
Refer to the US national anthem being heavily booed at a WWE event in Perth a few days ago. Australians are generally really respectful when other national anthems are being played at sporting events so that is highly unusual - even for God Save the King or Queen at an Ashes Test and that is about as important as things get.

Being from the outside of the Western sphere, I would like to know from you guys, just who can replace Donald "The Idiot" Trump as President of the USA?
It's not like the democrats or republicans have any viable candidate either.
It's pretty much common knowledge that JD Vance will be that republican candidate. So... yeah.

I wish the media would use proper headlines on tariffs. The headline says the United States will levy a tariff on Chinese exports. It should say tariffs are levied on imports from China. Those things are not the same.

Also, lots of mainstream media outlets will use Trump's language in the headlines. For example, I saw a lot of headlines about India paying a tariffs. Incorrect wording muddles reality.

Regarding your last sentence. Yes, yes it does. That's kinda the point.

Well, that, and outright lying over and over and over again until it becomes accepted as the 'truth'.

Trump was recently asked a question from a reporter on Air Force One and Trump himself literally said he doesn't expect to make it into heaven. He said it repeatedly.
