Google wants Android Automotive to control more of your car

While true for phones, it isn't actually true for Google TV, which has quite rigorous standards. What it doesn't have, however, is required OTA software updates. Hopefully Android Automotive will have the rigorous requirements we see with Google TV, but that they have solved the OTA problem of...

Newly purchased Vizio TVs now require Walmart accounts to use smart features

Bigger recommendation is don't buy TVs from Walmart. Quite apart from this specific new issue, Walmart force the manufacturers to create Walmart variants (and Walmart have the volumes needed for that) which are under-configured compared to most non-Walmart versions. Slightly under-configured...

Self-propagating malware poisons open source software and wipes Iran-based machines

What include MI6 in that list? 1) Isn't the correct British agency 2) The Brits seem to be providing minimal assistance to the Trump Family war on Iran 3) CIA is probably wrong too, but only because it'd be the NSA.

Orbital data centers, part 1: There’s no way this is economically viable, right?

being brought up in Northern England, the combination of natural cloud cover, light pollution and airborne pollution meant that I rarely saw stars.

After hack, some ignition interlock users couldn’t start their own cars

And keep in mind that the limits for DUI are generally well below that of being actually drunk. The punishment for being just over the limit should be substantially less that for someone who is actually drunk or enough above the limit that they are substantially impaired. I worked, several...

Google wants Android Automotive to control more of your car

Part of the issue is how bad a job most automobile manufacturers are at implementing and maintaining these systems. To those legitimately concerned about data collection: Google's business model doesn't involve sharing your data with third parties and we have already seen some manufacturers...

Google details new 24-hour process to sideload unverified Android apps

The 24 hr waiting period is to set the device into "sideloading" mode, not for each application sideloaded, based on my understanding. It does stop someone from briefly getting physical access to your phone (such as ICE/border patrol or a hotel employee) and sideloading a noxious application...

Staff complain that xAI is flailing because of constant upheaval

It certainly helped kill Palm, when the bottom-up rewrite of WebOS from 1.x to 2.x ran over a year late and launched without some of 1.x's features.

BYD’s latest EVs can get close to full charge in just 12 minutes

A few other nitpics with the article 1) 800km range using what EV range standard? Certainly not USA EPA, but is it the WLTP (Europe) or the totally useless range "standard" they use in China, or some number dreamt up by BYD's marketing department? Even if WLTP, is it the blended value? 2)...

Facing heavy losses, Honda cancels its three US-made electric vehicles

Oh so close... Your car is full of software-driven devices, the only question is where that software runs. Does your headlight unit have its own software stack, or is it just a dumb appliance for software running in a central location? The former makes the unit more expensive and needs...

Lucid announces midsize EV platform, says profitability lies with SUVs

This is the real point here. I want Lucid to succeed, but talking about cybertaxis, autonomous and AI is just an attempt to goose up their rather sad stock price. They actually need, right now, something similar to what Rivian are actually putting into production.

Rivian reveals pricing and trim details for its R2 SUV

Unless you really need AWD, this variant is the really sweet spot: Because the skateboard design, there's lots of weight on the rear wheels and RWD works extremely well on a modern, well-designed BEV. We will probably buy that to replace our 2018 RWD LR Model 3 (130+K miles so far).

Facing heavy losses, Honda cancels its three US-made electric vehicles

Yes, cancelling EVs just as people in USA are receiving a big "gas price jolt" to remind them why we should all be moving away from vehicles that use fossil fuels.

Google Maps gets its biggest navigation redesign in a decade, plus more AI

What's really needed is a solid option to avoid dirt roads and to avoid seasonal roads out of season (ex: unploughed mountain roads in the winter)
  15. J

These new winter tires have studs that retract as it warms up

Perhaps that's why they are only claiming a 30% reduction in road damage. So nearly a nothing-burger, because the reduction is not enough to justify wider usage.

CISA adds 3 iOS flaws to its catalog of known exploited vulnerabilities

...and Safari is WebKit-based. One of Google's justifications for going to Chromium from WebKit (for Chrome) is there is so much legacy cruft in WebKit that it is bloated and difficult to maintain. Because of WebKit's history, and that large chunks of it were written before modern browser code...

Musk testifies tweet that led to $44 billion lawsuit “may not have been my wisest”

My reaction is: "is this the best line of answering that his lawyers could come up with?" There does seem to be a strong stench associated with his attempts to say "hey, not my fault because I'm impulsive"

There are plenty of great choices if you want to spend less than $15K on an EV

The sub-text on the Consumer Reports remarks on older Teslas was that it primarily applied to Model S and X. The older Model 3 and Y have very good reliability, though I wouldn't recommend a 2017 Model 3. Our Model 3 is a June 2018 manufacture, with 130K miles on it. It has been an extremely...
