Doubling the voltage: What 800 V architecture really changes in EVs

Why stop at 800V, and keep going to 1600, or 3200?

Apple MacBook Neo review: Can a Mac get by with an iPhone’s processor inside?

It's becoming difficult to see how this is a better replacement for the Walmart M1 Air, other than being more widely available and in colors. It has the same price but worse performance, worse battery life, less resolution screen, worse ports, worse trackpad, etc.

2026 Subaru Uncharted first drive: FWD might be the biggest selling point

At least the Toyota has a round steering wheel, though wonder if the buttons on this are also criminally capacative.

The 2026 Mazda CX-5, driven: It got bigger; plus, radical tech upgrade

I've got a '17 CX5 that I mostly love (besides the dog-slow infotainment). The lack of climate and volume buttons/knobs, and capacitive steering wheel buttons makes it a complete non-starter for my next new car.

Wikipedia bans Archive.today after site executed DDoS and altered web captures

It's surprising that Wikipedia was freely allowing links to a piracy site to begin with.

Apple releases iOS 26.3 with updates that mainly benefit non-Apple devices

Looks like they are twisting the knife for people not wanting iOS 26 by only releasing 18.7.5 for devices not capable of running it. Stay classy Apple...

Microsoft sounds the alarm about Secure Boot certificates expiring later this year

Is there something off with the code? I tried both PowerShell and Terminal in Windows 11 and it seems to get an error, unless its just operator error: Get-SecureBootUEFI : Variable is currently undefined: 0xC0000100 At line:1 char:43 ...

    Apple TVs and HDMI weirdness

I have an older 4K tv that does this constantly, both with the old Windows htpc and current Mac Mini. The only solution is to cut power to the tv, wait for for all the power supply clicking to stop, and reconnect. Nearly always works after that. Its so bad I have the tv on a separate power strip...

    Searching SMB share from Mac

I would usually use EasyFind, which also frequently finds local files Spotlight fails on. Only downside is you have to wait for it to crawl through the server, or speed things up by picking a particular folder.

2.5 GE, more speed, more headaches

As another data point, I have a MBA M2 that a USB ethernet adapter would light up like you described and not register as connected on the first port next to Magsafe, but the other port works perfectly fine.

TikTok settles hours before landmark social media addiction trial starts

In my view all this hand-wringing around social media is just another Moral Panic, something convenient to scapegoat any perceived issues with society. No different when it was rock-n-roll, comic books, rap music, and especially video games in the 90's. It probably wouldn't be difficult to find...

    Perpetual Random Apple Rants Thread

It's the year 2026, and open/save dialogs still have the file name field a fixed width at around 25 characters. Just discovered that Default Folder X can actually fix that so might give it a try.

Report: Apple plans to launch AI-powered wearable pin device as soon as 2027

Relevance of the product function aside, did Apple forget they already sell a wearable device that could perform all these functions and would also be easier to wear? Hint: it goes on the wrist.

Signs point to a sooner-rather-than-later M5 MacBook Pro refresh

A current M4 would still be my choice as the new M5 will likely force you to use Tahoe.

New Apple "Creator Studio" subscription software bundle

It's like Apple has become the new Microsoft. I've used countless third-party software that have paid feature unlocks built into them and don't need the lazy route of separate apps. Wouldn't also surprise if it was demanded the icon be unique to indicate its part of CS and that set the direction...

ICEBlock lawsuit: Trump admin bragged about demanding App Store removal

What player do you use on your Mac?

VLC for most things but it's not perfect. It takes some settings changes to get rid of the annoying UI overlays overtop video, but mainly its because its designed to stream video rather than deal with frame based video. Fine for just playing something but not useful for scrubbing and almost...

    Ethernet surge protectors?

Thanks for the tips so far. I was afraid ethernet protectors/arrestors were like some common thing everyone knows about and assumes we are all using, but never talk about. My battery backups have built-in 1GbE ports for supposed protection but not sure if those would really do anything (not...

    Ethernet surge protectors?

A couple weeks ago had a nearby lightning strike that seems to have fried the 10GbE ports in a couple of Macs. Luckily nothing else seems to have been bothered by it. Both were on completely separate lines coming from the switch, one line just run along the floor and the other taking a detour up...

Ooof that passenger display, Android Auto is really not designed to be compatible with that aspect ratio.
