Canada fought measles and measles won; virus now endemic after 1998 elimination

“Today, rather than lamenting the loss of a regional status, we call on all countries to redouble their efforts to strengthen vaccination rates, surveillance, and timely response to suspected cases—reaching every corner of the Americas. As a Region, we have eliminated measles twice. We can do it a third time.”
I mean... yes, I get it. Be positive, not defeatist. But for fuck's sake, why should you have to do it a third time? That's the part that shits me so hard. Why does society have to keep fighting the same battles over and over just because some die-hards can't stop trying to wind back the clock?

Because idiocy is endemic, and we have yet to develop a vaccine for it.

Hm, did Canada actually "beat" the US to this, or is Canada just doing a better job of tracking their cases given the number of "if you don't test then you don't have any cases" people currently in charge in the US?
Given that Alberta alone has more reported cases than the entire US, the under-reporting would have to be massive for this to be the case.

Question: how to Canadians pronounce "PHAC"?

Follow-up question: would that be in any way descriptive of the overall situation?
Pee-HACK.

Follow-up: the two provinces headed by the most conservative leaders are getting hammered, but those leaders refuse to acknowledge the scope of the issue, or that there is a really simple solution because they're what we call Maple MAGA's: the same level of corruption, grift, hypocrisy, and lies as Trump but less showy.

Alberta has about 2,000 cases reported YTD - likely an under count because many of the communities don't seek medical attention - 41 cases per 100,000 people.

Ontario has had about 2,400 cases reported YTD - same note - 15 cases per 100,000 people.

I get that the internet giving everyone access to important information has not created a heaven on earth quite yet, since completely deranged people can now find a community of like minded, supportive, equally deranged losers to help them feel normal. What took me by surprise is the number of people who have made a career out of peddling deadly misinformation. Was it utterly naive to underestimate the number of enthusiastic death merchants so completely? Aren't most criminals reluctant to kill anyone for money? RFK jr, obviously isn't but so many others? We're evidently a flawed species but taking back the asylum from the lunatics is surely within our power. There are precedents.

Because Fascism and appealing to emotions is easier than Democracy and achieving consensus based on education?

Post content hidden for low score. Show…
I'm waiting for France and Germany to require all visitors from the US (and perhaps now Canada) to spend 3 days in an on-airport quarantine hotel receiving doses of all the basic vaccinations. They can no longer trust US vaccination records after the US Justice Dept moved to drop the prosecution of Utah dentist Michael Kirk Moore.

The UCP MAGA branch is causing damage that will take decades to recover from.
Im not sure "decades" is the correct time frame. If we look at the fuster-cluck that was the US Reconstruction (after the US Civil war), I would argue that it's been 160 years, and we're STILL dealing with the issues/results of that.

And that assumes that we even CAN come back after this. How do you convince the MAGATs to change their mind about something as straightforward and easily proven, when we have direct proof of their refusal to believe the facts in their faces?

I have a MAGA sister-in-law, that lost her unvaccinated daughter to COVID, and still thinks vaccines are a sham. And this bullshit mentality is rampant.

Best case is their kids fall for the same BS, but after THEIR kids fall ill, there will be enough distance from the current idiocy that opinions change, but that wont happen for nearly a century.

Various science fiction authors over the years have written of societies in which birth control was mandatory and that being a parent was only possible if you achieved a licence.

Once upon a time, I thought that was a horrible thing.

Now: I'm not as sure :(
It would be, because it'd be used to further eugenics, an extremely popular concept for what appears to be a majority of the population so long as you don't refer to it by name.

Another solved problem that idiots reversed, with the predicted results. And now they and their ignorant contrarian allies are in control of a powerful government. The odds of a Great Garbage Avalanche have jumped immensely..
Alberta has the 'excuse' of only having elected Smith once in 2022.

In Ontario Ford has been around since 2019, killed 12,247 Ontarians with his 'handling' of COVID (when it was first reported in Ontario Ford got on TV and implored the population to "Get out and enjoy March Break!"), then after a scandal emerged where for-profit care facilities weren't taking care of their patients because it wasn't profitable and the army needed to be called he passed legislation indemnifying those private facilities from lawsuits, and despite that he's still been re-elected, twice (a second time in 2023, then he called a snap election in 2025 just as everyone was freaking out about Trump tariffing everything under the sun, and now he's passing legislation to increase his term to 5 years).

:head shake:

Ignoring Alberta, I would suspect this is down to people being more educated on the risks and having a publicly accessible health system, which won't ruin you. The system does have its issues, but at least it won't make you have to choose between illness and having to declare bankruptcy (I accept this is an extreme scenario).

No, same level of (un)education and it's worse because Danielle Smith is wasting limited healthcare money on private, for-profit service providers which is bleeding the system dry, hospitals are closing in rural parts of the province. Same thing is happening in Ontario with Doug Ford. Just like with Trump, it's all about siphoning as much public money as possible.
