The Rant. ( The Question Follows )

I'll be clear. I can't stand the xbox controller. To the point that I do not play the xbox very often. I gritted my teeth thru Halo Reach, and that was the last time I played thru a game on the Xbox 360. Now that I have moved, I have met a whole crop of guys to play online with via the xbox, and would like to partake. Without using the monstrosity that is the 360 controller.

The PS 3 controller fits better in my hands and does not cause me to cramp. The button placement is just easier to reach.

And jesus fucking christ in a hand basket why in god's good name did Microsoft decide to offset the thumbsticks. Seriously. Microsoft Engineers. Put your hands in the neutral position. If your right thumb juts off at a 45 degree angle from the palm of your hand, you need to seek medical attention. Maybe its broken. Maybe the tendon dont work the way nature intended. Most peoples thumbs stay within 15 degrees or so of offset.

Not only that, it is an artisticly displeasing. Yeah. Lets make it look edgey and shit with the offset thumbsticks. That's retarded like putting 3 20 inch wheels and 1 26 inch wheel on a god damn honda civic. Ooooh. Edgey and Practical! Mostly its just giving the shit car enough clearance to allow for that stupid muffler you attached to it so it sounds like a cracked out lawnmower.

The PS 3 controller is superior in every way.

Not trying to start a flame war, because I know some people are delusional over the the 360 controller. ( my wife for example) :D

The Question

Is there a controller out there using the PS 3 design on the 360 that anyone is aware of? I don't care if you have to dongle it to the usb slot, or if it connects wirelessly automatically.

I just want an xbox 360 controller that uses the (inherently superior) PS 3 controller design.

I have looked online, and managed to find a few interesting dongles you can add, but I one requires that you also have a wired x360 controller, the other doesn't seem to actually sell, but no controllers.

You have tiny freaking hands. And I agree with Huma_22.

That said, Logitech used to have a PS3-style controller that worked with the 360, IIRC, but I can't find it any more, so you might be SOL. My experience with third party controllers this generation is that they pretty much all suck anyway.

Oh my freaking god :D

I said it fits better in my hands, not that it was better sized.

It's the intelligence Sony engineers put in to angle of the grips, and the well place triggers.

I could plastic pellets, silicon and some wires and crap out a better design then 360 controller.

The original Xbox controller was more suited to playing games then the 360 controller. No wait. That's a lie.

I just find it an awkward controller. Always have,

Sucks about the third part tho. I may pick up one of the dongles.

Because they understand that two sticks on the same plane but controlling different concepts is less intuitive than if you have them on separate planes.

Look at the two controllers:
sixaxis-controller-2.jpg

xbox-360-controller.jpg
Notice how the face buttons are centered over the Exact. Same. Spot. on the mirrored side? How the thumbstick has a throw that's very close (if not exactly the same) as the reach you would have to hit in order to hit the face buttons on the far side? Unless you're going to complain about the face buttons cramp your hands as well your argument is flawed.

Second. Why are you holding it as though your fingers are pointing directly at each other? Notice the slope of the handles on both controllers? How it's angled so your hands are at rest at an angle to the center line of the controller? The only way that I can think of to make using the 360's left thumbstick uncomfortable (which also makes the face buttons terribly uncomfortable to hit and the shoulder buttons nearly impossible) is if I held it with my fingers pointing directly at each other behind the controller. Which is doubly uncomfortable because that's not the way the controller was designed to be held.

The PS3 controller, OTOH, is not uncomfortable to hit the left stick, but (even giving my relative suckitude at controller driven shooters) having both movement and aiming controlled by sticks on the same plane is about at difficult as rubbing my stomach and patting my head and then switching hands. Which is to say, unpossible.

Now, if you have freakishly small hands, I can get the complaint. Though, again, the face buttons should be causing you similar trouble. The problem isn't Microsoft's design though. It's the fact that they won't license any third party controllers that doesn't follow their layout (or isn't of similar size).

Also, your rant? Weak. Zeus would be disappoint.

Because that's a far more comfortable arrangement than the foul PS3 sticks.

Patently false. Not only are the 360 thumbsticks better, the 360 triggers/bumpers are far and away better than the shitty PS3 buttons.

Fragmented thoughts aren't paragraphs.

Having to scroll so much for so little content is annoying.

Nope. You're fucking trolling. There is no other possibility. Those triggers are the single dumbest things on the controller. There is no fucking logical reason that they're curved down. The natural movement for your fingers when you press them becomes sliding off of them. Like seriously, whoever designed that is a moron.

I still don't get the whole love affair with the 360 controller (or any controller for that matter). I have pretty big hands, but I can use the PS3 controller for extended periods without any discomfort (not a huge fan of the digital pad though).

I have no big problems with the 360 controller either, but I don't find anything special about it. If anything, I hate the digital pad and the 4 face buttons (I prefer the flat button design on Nintendo/Sony controllers). The placement of the analog sticks isn't anything better or worse than what Sony/Nintendo does, for me at least.

I have no problems with Nintendo controllers either (Classic controller, Wii U Pro controller, Wii U tablet controller, etc.), and prefer its digital cross pad design over anything offered by Sony or Microsoft.

I'm not a fan of the Xbox's offset thumbsticks and the crappy d-pad. Plus the whole thing feels a bit like holding a plate or saucer. On the flipside, the PS3 has the worst L2/R2 trigggers possible. And it causes cramps, which the plate nature of the Xbox's controller seems to alleviate.

On the whole I prefer the PS remotes, but it ain't no ringing endorsment...

++ to this.
Got the special edition Tomb Raider one that was discounted when you bought the game - the transformable D-pad makes a huge difference.

I think they have gotten a lot better. I love my R.A.T.7, and I've had it for two years now.

The R.A.T. 7 mouse is by far the best mouse I have ever owned. If i recall correctly, ARS aptly reviewed it as megatrons left testicle.

I am still trying to convince my wife that the http://www.cyborggaming.com/prod/strike7.htm is a need. A 330$ dollar need for my computer. I am not winning.

3rd party controllers had a well-deserved reputation of horribleness for quite a long time. Way back when I worked at GameStop (12 years now?) we would actively steer people away from 3rd party controllers. Most people would just pick up the cheaper option regardless. Quite a few would return after a few weeks and buy 1st party.

Mad Catz is one of the few that have attempted to redeem themselves and started putting serious effort into quality improvement. Unfortunately they all had the American car manufacturer problem - the general reputation of quality was so bad that even when they started improving quality no one bothered to recommend them. From what I understand (I barely keep up with gaming tech these days) they've kept at it. More power to them.

I love the Xbox controller. I still own one for occassionaly PC gaming use.

What is a 'transformable D-pad'?

This guy is the one I have. I think this one is the same in different colors.

I have this one.So I shouldn't really care about looks when it comes to a controller, but it looks sweet.

You're definitely wrong. The xbox controller isn't without it's flaws (shitty d-pad, I'm looking at you)

The sticks are offset so that the most natural hand position gives you one thumb on the left stick and one over the buttons (as opposed to one over the d-pad and the other over the buttons like the PS3). They're purposely placed that way. The PS3 placement is a vestige of how the controller was designed. The PS1 originally only had a d-pad and buttons, the sticks were added later (along with vibration) in an upgraded 'dual shock' controller and kept that way.

Having used a PS controller for over a decade and the 360 controller as long as the system has been out..

The PS3 controller is sadly inferior in many ways. The stick placement is only good for Katamari Damacy. The convex buttons are good if you want your thumbs to slip off for no reason (ok, the reason is lack of friction). I also believe if a game on the PS3 wants you to press in the sticks for a button the devs sat around laughing about how uncomfortable it must be, and decided it was worth seeking revenge on the gamer in adding that function.

The trigger buttons are there to make you experience what it is like to press triggers and have your fingers slide off at the worst time.

It has an excellent d-pad, though. Industry best for years. I think the face buttons press better than the xbox, too, but not enough to make a big deal about it.
