I did an upgrade install from Vista SP1 to Win7, on my main laptop (a domain member with a not too large number of apps installed). Gutsy, I know ... and I may live to regret it.
So far I have the following issues:
These issues are on a Thinkpad T42, 32bit, 2GB RAM, 1.7Ghz Pentium M. Aside from these, I like W7. Everything else seems to be working fine, and the system (unscientifically) feels more performant.
So far I have the following issues:
- Chrome doesn't run at all. The --in-process param does not fix it. I haven't yet tried remove/reinstall.
- Windows Update advertised a driver update for the ATI Mobility Radeon video driver. Installing it broke my ability to stretch desktop across two monitors. Rolling it back fixed that.
- Windows Update also advertised a driver update for the AC '97 audio controller. This simply won't install. That's ok, sound seems to be working.
- W7 complains about Skype being incompatible, though it seems to work fine. Recommends installing the Skype beta. After I do that, W7 still complains and says I should install ... the Skype beta.
- All of the above are low impact, but this is not: I use a Bluetooth device called Streamer to pipe sound into my hearing aids. It worked well under Vista. It doesn't work under Win7. Note that only the MS Bluetooth drivers are in play here; no 3rdparty drivers. Yes I get that this is a rare deal.
- And I can't send any of my observations in via the 'Send Feedback' links that are liberally plastered everywhere in W7. I get "The given Live ID does not have permission to submit bugs for the Connect form defined for the Feedback Tool, or the service is unavailable." MS need to address this last one ASAP. At least explain who can send feedback and who can't. Tell me the criteria for being a fullfledged Connect beta user!
