Jeez. Nobody chooses to transition because they think it means it might make their life easier. You either are or aren’t.
No, people are not binaries. Very few people are clearly any one thing. There are many phrases like “culturally jewish,” “cafeteria catholics,” and “protestant ceos” to describe american’s non-binary religious affiliations.
Barry Diller was a famously gay Hollywood executive until he met Dianne Von Fuestenberg and they’ve been together on and off for years, with kids. Where does he fit on the binary? Or are there a similar multitude of phrases to describe the many people enjoying the multitude of points on the human spectrum?
What if it has become easier and more socially acceptable to be between the binary? My theory is exactly that: there is more community and more opportunity and more pragmatic paths to a stable life available via the very accepting trans community than there is via any of the pre-existing hetero-normative communities.
True story: I worked with a dozen undergrads and a few post docs on a retail ecomm project. I was the only self identified “straight” person. Multiple team members used they/them pronouns in relationships with other people using they/thems that appeared outwardly to be heterosexual relationships; biologically female trans people happily dating biologically male trans people. Where does that fit on your binary?
Edit for anecdote and to clarify I’m not judging anyone for anything; any consenting people are welcome to do anything, I even support Nikolai Tesla falling in love with a pigeon if it made them happy.
