Well, it's not a concept car, that's just the name—they are selling a few. But I suppose you could take home the fact that despite its weight the P90D is bonkers-quick in a straight line? Possibly even as fast as a $2 million Ferrari?

Makes you wonder just how fast the P100D is going to be, doesn't it?
If you gave me a P100D I wouldn't complain but I don't think it is going to be that much faster. It will probably shave one or two tenths of a second off the quarter mile but that is it.

To be faster the car really needs to be lighter. A Tesla Roadster 2.0 using everything they learned from the P90D design and specifically built with weight reduction and upgraded cooling in mind would be insane.

As someone up thread pointed out this was a Million dollar high-performance sports car vs. a $100K production sedan.

No the Tesla didn't win. But performed very well for not even being in the same class as the Rimac.

1. Truly worried about the cars in the hands of that Hamilton kid.
He waves his hands about, keeps fidgeting with the wheel, the hand position is nothing like a racing driver, not to mention lack of a helmet which would surely spoil his hair.
2. As others are saying Tesla is much more practical and almost as good, but it's good that there is competition, especially so from a small start-up, keeps the innovation going and prices low. I wish both companies well.

I'd also say, after watching the clip a few times over, it seems he was slower to respond off the line. Not that the Tesla was ever going to beat either car, but, it may have done just a hair better.

It's more likely that the dusty surface in this comparison video skewed the results. It shouldn't be surprising that a vehicle with AWD (the Rimac is capable of driving each wheel) can out-accelerate the RWD LaFerrari in a scenario with reduced traction. It'd be interesting to see the comparison re-done on a cleaner surface or drag strip.

Was going to post pretty much this. The overhead shots are especially cringe worthy because you can tell that both drivers are having a hard time controlling their vehicles.

I'd really like to see this done with some professional drivers...not that I think the results will be different but at least the driving will be tolerable.

Driving only quarter miles and nothing else with LaFerrari makes relatively little sense. They spent insane amount of engineering effort to make the car go around corners, which it supposedly does pretty well.

Only doing quarter miles is not very representative measure of it's performance.

I'm not sure either of the drivers in that video are capable of taking the LaFerrari into a corner at high speed.

It's easy to package in a short video clip and it's something very digestible for average people (even those who have no real interest or understanding of cars). It's also very easy to popularise with a short press release and provides an opportunity for many sites to churn out a skeleton story with minimal effort for clicks. It's one of the reasons Tesla have promoted their advancements in 0-60mph times to the extent that they have.

And in a straight line you can beat all three with a sub $10k junk yard turbo special.

There seems to be an intentional reach for every angle to talk about EVs and fellate the technology on a daily basis developing here at Ars. It's certainly building a dedicated set of readers / commentators who will not tolerate any debate which does not extol the virtues of EVs and denigrate ICEs.

Nonsense. Please provide an example. Show me any vehicle powered by any method which can do sub 10 second quarter mile for $10K in cost. Hell show me one which can do it for $50K.

I agree. It's also worth pointing out that the little bit of wiggling when the cars are accelerating would be seen with any driver behind the wheel. When you are putting that much torque to the ground the car is going to try and break free.

+1 and a laugh, although I have to be pedantic and say it should be at least "South Eastern" - nobody here in Croatia ever said we're "Eastern" Europe or Eastern anything else. Even Yugoslavia translates into "South Slav land". ;-)

Makes you wonder just how fast the P100D is going to be, doesn't it?

No, it doesn't. I love Tesla, and I'm definitely going to own one someday but it doesn't come close to the performance of a LaFerrari. Maybe in 10-15 years.

You'll take the Ferrari on a track, you'd never do it with the Tesla. After lap 3 it'll go into reduced propulsion mode because the batteries can't take the heat. The Tesla can't corner like the Ferrari, it doesn't have the high end speed, etc, etc, etc.

The real question is if the Concept_One has any cornering ability! A fast drag time is impressive, but can it run with the LaFerrari, Porsche 918, and McLaren P1 on the track?

MaxArt[/url]":pfklbms7]Meh, never understood the enthusiasm around quarter-mile sprinters. After all, it's not the sheer acceleration that makes a great car. For that, you need to test it on a real circuit, at least.

I could imagine that some might be fond of a pilot's skills to win a drag race, but that's all.

People have enthusiasms for all sorts of events. You could argue successfully that even racing around your "real circuit" is nothing like real world conditions.

You could also argue that all car racing is completely arbitrary and fruitless. After all, if you want to get somewhere nearby fast, best option is going to be a helicopter. Anything besides that, private jet.

Cars are outmoded anyways, right?

So, accepting all this, drag racing is just another event. Kind of like how olympic sprinting is its own event, as is hurdles, as is long jump, etc.

There isn't some "broader purpose."
