Twitter missed payroll for some European staff this month

You know, we were all betting that after the great purges Twitter would suffer a technical failure that brought it down. But while it certainly seems to be degrading it hasn't quite gone down yet. Now seeing this I'm starting to think that even with the speed run of technical and institutional destruction good old financial difficulties and failures may still win out as the death blow to Twitter and that the technology stack may outlive the company just on its own automation and inertia

In other stupid Twitter news I saw reported that Muskbrat sent an email to managers demanding to see what code they've written in the past 10 days saying that them not writing code would be like "a cavalry leader not knowing how to ride a horse" completely missing what the point of officers are in a military setting

There have been reports that EU workers have been showing up, as usual, because Twitler's ultimatum is completely unenforceable under EU law, and this is why Twitter hasn't keeled over yet. Still... how long do you suppose people are going to keep showing up if they're not getting paid? Especially when you have to deal with Twitler as a boss who seems to change his mind from one minute to the next.

Musk's infatuation with lines of code written has outgrown creepiness and now seems quasi-religious. I don't understand how much he doesn't understand.

Sounds like Jaspar's in charge now.

  • Complaining about nazis? That's a firin'
  • Not clicking an email agreeing to BS terms by the end of the day? That's a firin'
  • Lighting a fire? You better believe that's a firin'

My first job was for a complete scumbag. He never paid me on time. Not once in the 5 months I worked there.

That's one of the reasons why I only worked there for 5 months. Telling him to stick his job up his fat fucking arse along with his fat fucking head was one of the most satisfying moments of my life.

Are you sure that's a typo? Maybe they invested the payroll in some kind of highly speculative security, and it went poof.
You might be joking, but seriously, I wouldn't be that surprised if Elon just had the payments delayed so he could get a few % on some quick‑turnaround fund returns. Even if they get paid (hopefully!) a few days later, that's still a gain for the company, even if highly deplorable one. Although, by now I wouldn't be really surprised if he indeed had lost it on speculative securities like in your SP clip...

Unfortunately expected when most of your payroll staff quit or were fired, yet Twitter PR double speak makes it sound like they are surprised there is an issue.
Twitter PR? What's that? Some poor bastard trying to comment on the ceasless firehose of dumb that is now Twitter? Good luck with that.

Oh, you'd definitely continue to show up at work if some scumbag company tried to unlawfully fire you in the EU. After all, you are still considered to be employed there under the law, and courts will order a full reimbursement of the backpay owed and more.

As to any actual work these employees might be doing, I guess not really much – show up at the door, take a selfie trying out their disabled access card (just for the court record) to get inside (maybe even sit all day playing mobile games at their desk if actually allowed inside, while still locked out of all of their company access accounts), go back home...

While I was making a kind of tongue-in-cheek comment, I was also thinking about a real-life example of someone doing something similar.

If it doesn't fold soon, I hate to to think of what their code base is going to look like in a year with everyone in the company committing as much code as possible to keep their jobs.

Having been in a company where the paychecks start bouncing, Twitter is dead within 6 months, tops
Was gonna say the same thing.

Another dead giveaway is when a company starts saying they're "having problems with their suppliers." The "problem" is nearly always that their suppliers haven't been payed.

I worked at a place for a while where expense payments in the last month of a quarter were always delayed into the following quarter. Nothing like working at a company that's barely staying in business by not covering your expenses. They did always pay me on time though.
