Twitter Blue is coming back—with more colors and assurances from Musk

Why not just use all the colors?

"We got the information from Twitter! The user was sea foam green verified!"

"Well, we also got the information from Twitter, and our source is forest green verified!"

Later, I'll build a deck of black and blue verified twitter checkmarks to see how it plays against my buddy's black and red verified twitter checkmarks. He's low on mountains to tap so I'm hoping I can hit him with a few Vesuvan Doppelgangers early on before he can put together a big enough fireball.

"controls allowing advertisers to prevent branded ads from appearing “above or below tweets containing certain keywords,”"

Discerning, for example, if a Tweet is pro-LGBT or deeply bigoted just from "certain keywords used" sounds nigh impossible.
Just like Level 3 autonomous driving without LIDAR.

Musk brings back Twitter Blue with new features to prevent impersonation

I don't see anything in the Reuters article to suggest they are stopping impersonation of individuals. The colored marks make it harder to impersonate businesses or government agencies, but blue is still blue. Is there a new process for vetting those purchased blue checkmarks? Is there any staff left to check them? Seems like we will just have a repeat.

It'll have to crash into the walls long enough for Musk to realize he's wasting more of his own money the longer it goes on and no hope for $1+ billion in profits per year, then into chapter 11 bankruptcy for rescheduling and elimation (?) of debt. Guessing 6 months for us to get to that situation.

You're assuming he wants it to make money, and doesn't just want it as a tool for manipulating discourse and settling political scores. No one asks how much money their screwdriver made them last week.

Elon cares as much about privacy, security, and child safety as he does about the people his family exploited under Apartheid.
Ah, however I do want to remind you. Elon Musk's family did not claim to be humanities savior while wrecking people's lives. He's always reminding people that he's trying to save us.

Although it's disgusting to compare the two it might be that he's worse.

I mean...his actions so far have made it extremely clear he's worried about the site making money, if only because he needs it to to afford the billion dollars in interest he's going to owe each year from here on out.

Of course, he also doesn't understand that the things he's doing to make money also push away users and advertisers, thus making it damn near impossible to make money.

I will believe Musk when he says things will happen, when they actually happen.

Did Twitter/Musk explain how the new check system will prevent impersonation? Is there going to be more verification on Twitter's end besides "you gave us money?"
It will prevent impersonation of those that Musk thinks that matter. That is Twitter accounts associated with companies (gold) and governments (grey). A celebrity is screwed since they are neither so they just get blue like everyone else.

I'm just wondering if they meant gold and silver as an allegory of having to pay Twitter for proof that they are really government X or company Y

I'm wondering if even the business or government are going to be hard to fake. Is someone at Twitter actually going to check that the person works for the organization they claim? Are they going to be good enough to spot someone spoofing? Is Twitter's process scalable beyond a couple dozen entities a day?

The businesses and governments have a different check mark, though I'm not sure if they have to pay for them. So I expect if it's a business or government, the verification will be more in-depth. With three levels of "I am me" bullshit, they're more likely to focus on verification for everyone other than the blue checks, since they don't relate to anyone other than "people".

Celebrities and commoners all get blue checks for a fee. I don't expect Musk cares who they are as long as businesses and governments aren't screaming at him to fix the verification system.

Beyond that, I don't see why anyone would bother with a blue check if they can't troll some business or government in the process. There's no incentive to paying for it that I can tell.

And nothing in these announcements really says anything to me that Twitter is in any way, shape or form a good place to advertise. There's no mention of how to prevent concurrent showing of ads near extremists posts. All I see are platitudes that essentially say, "We've swept this under the rug, so come back and spend money on us!"

It's exactly like watching a train wreck that takes ten seconds for everything to stop moving played out over months worth of time. Sure, the Titanic only took 2 hours and 40 minutes to sink, but the Twitanic is inevitably going down because nothing done to date actually addresses the issue of extremists infesting the place again. Once the EU pulls the plug on them because they don't have enough of a moderation team to handle the load, the flooding will accelerate that sinking time-table.

I'll be somewhat surprised if they make it to the end of next month. I wouldn't be surprised if they don't make it to the end of THIS month.

Ahahahaa. That isn't going to prevent people from using this to impersonate governments or companies.

Something tells me Musk wouldn’t like a rainbow of check mark colors on his new Twitter
He (me /sarcasm just to be clear) probably wouldn't complain if they implemented stars, triangles, and crosses, alongside checkmarks, and added colors like yellow, pink, and black.

I haven't figured out what other colors and symbols he would approve of. Green clovers? Red circles? I can't think of anything for purple or orange, though.

This idea that Elon Musk, the billionaire, doesn't care about making money is honestly so fucking comical to me.

You realize all you need to do in order to impersonate a government or business is get the blue check mark? Anyone who knows anything about UI design knows that people will misinterpret the blue check mark and probably won't know the difference between them. Especially since blue used to mean verified.

So he will certainly make money because both propoganda bots from countries like Russia and impersonators will probably find they still work for impersonation.

It also occurred to me that Musk doesn't know these things because he's not a software engineer of any sort.

Fuck. Now you've done it.

Pretty sure posts like this cause some sort of bat signal to go up somewhere.

It won't be long now before we're flooded with people telling us that Elon is, in fact, a software engineer, a mechanical engineer, a controls engineer, an industrial engineer, an engineer engineer, a rocket surgeon, a rocket scientist, and an astrophysicist.
